The Greatest Generation calls you
Brand new league just starting up - The Greatest Generation
Greatest Generation Baseball (or GGB) is dedicated to the memory of the players, like Ted Williams, who sacrificed large chunks of their careers to the service of their country in WWII. The recent passing of the Splendid Splinter inspired me to create the league, with the thought of what if these guys had been able (or willing) to stay home during the war years instead of rallying to the flag. Guys like Williams, DiMaggio, Feller, Greenberg, and countless others lost three, four or even five seasons to military service. In GGB, they will get their due. The league is career based, with real players (but Reduced Ratings to add a little spice to the mix) - coaches/scouts turned off, financials turned on. I've packed some interesting features (IMO) into the league: 1) the league will expand to 20 teams for the 1946 season. This is possible because of the numerous "replacement" players who filled in for the departed stars. 2) the league will draft two seasons ahead of time. This means no quick fix, but should have a positive effect for teams who carefully plan. 3) the biggest - the first five seasons (the "pre-expansion" seasons or war seasons) will be quick simmed. Basically you'll only be playing GM - making trades and dealing with the all-important aspects of drafting and free agency. Each season will be simmed in one week's time. 4) In 1946, the first "real" season for the league (in that we will begin simming on a normal schedule of one month per week of real time), the expansion teams will join the fray. Prior to their expansion season, the new teams (Houston Colt 45's and Milwaukee Brewers in the NL, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals in the AL) will begin drafting rookies in 1944 (since these players will not actually debut until the 1946 season). 5) Using my background and resources (I work for MLB) I've tailored the players' ratings so that they most accurately reflect the players skills. 6) I've also incorporated their actual uniform numbers as of 1941 - find out who wore #7 for the Yankees before Mickey Mantle (if you don't already know). 7) Players are also normalized for ballpark and league, so maybe you can figure out how Stan Musial may have done with a home park different from Sportsman's Park (assuming you can get him away from the Cardinals, that is). I run several OOTP leagues and participate in several others and the one I enjoy most, Golden Days (formerly Glory Days), is the type of league I am striving to create (although about a decade further down the road than the GDBA's current season). We'll have a forum and I'd encourage the GMs to post stories, debates, etc - after all, a league is only as strong as the people in it. The rules page and some of the other non-OOTP pages are not ready for primetime yet, but the home page, with teams linked from their logos and the OOTP pages are good. Check out the league - if you have any interest or questions, drop me an email at commish@legendsport.com Thanks for reading this long missive, Joe

You can also elect to take over one of the four expansion teams, with the understanding that you'll have to wait three seasons for something to do.
The league will also feature a newsletter in addition to the forum.

Just want to quickly compliment you on your website. Nicely done. I especially like the logos on the front page.
Wish I had room... |

Thanks for the compliment - I want this league to be top flight all the way, so I put a little extra into the website.

Only three expansion teams remain available (Baltimore has been claimed) - here's a rules excerpt on the expansion teams (which debut in 1946):
GGB will expand for the 1946 season. The expansion teams will be the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals in the American League and the Houston Colt 45s and Milwaukee Brewers in the National League. The expansion teams will begin drafting rookies with the rest of the league prior to the 1944 season (for players debuting in 1946). The order of selection will be randomly selected prior to the draft and will be the first four picks in the 1944 and 1945 drafts, with the order reversed for the four teams from 1944 to 1945. The expansion teams will not participate in free agency until prior to the 1946 season. For the expansion draft, the teams will be drafting only from the teams within their own leagues (ie. Baltimore & KC will select only from AL players, while Houston & Milwaukee will select from only NL players). The established teams will protect 15 players from the expansion draft, can not lose more than three players apiece and will add 1 player to the protected list for every player they lose, meaning a team may only lose the 16th, 18th and 20th-best players from their rosters. Players who are free agents in 1946 are not eligible to be either drafted by expansion teams or protected by established teams.

The league is now full. I want to thank everyone who signed up, with special thanks to those like LivinLegend & Spleen who pointed people my way - thanks a bunch.
I'd like to point out that although GGB is full, if you are interested in getting on the waiting list, don't hesitate to drop me an email at commish@legendsport.com - and also I'd like to remind everyone that I have several other leagues which have openings at the moment - especially the Grand Ole Game which is similar to GGB, only 50 years earlier. The Alternate Universe League would also appeal to some, I should think. You can find links to these leagues in my signature. Anyway, thanks again to all. Joe
