Here is another idea. What if you combine the GM and Manager spot... so its like the role in a lot of online leagues, running the baseball side of the team. Then you have the owner, he deals with the business side, authorizes money for the GM to spend, and has a sort of final word. He also could have the power to hire/ fire GM-Managers.

I also like the fan or press idea, very innovative, which is certainly what you are going for.

Just a thought.

Merging roles would be a viable option if we can't find enough people to start off. I think it would be better to run them separately, but we'll see when time comes.

Owner/GM is the one that should be merged, as I would never be an owner if I didn't get to decide who got signed and would never be a GM if I was going to be told by the owner who it was "financially prudent" to sign.

Specs, that's the whole point of this idea. If you're a coach and you don't like your players, you can try to talk your GM into getting what you want. If you're an owner and the fans aren't happy, you can try to influence your GM into getting a star-caliber player. It adds another dimension to the game I believe. Sure, you don't have absolute control over your team, but I think that's what makes it interesting. Specs, you might not like it, that's your opinion and I respect it, but if you have other ideas to make a league different from all the ones active out there, please let me know

Since no one seems to want to contribute with original ideas (), I'll start a new discussion. Without leaving the management separation aspect aside, how do you think that the team locations should be determined? I have 3 main ideas: regional (Great Lakes), different districts of one city (Montréal since it's the only one I know) or a made-up country (I have these ideas sometimes...). If you have any other ideas, please let me know. However, it won't be the usual New York, L.A., Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, etc., that I promise you.

I like the "Local Press" idea that was brought up. One guy managing and making decisions, ,and another assessing his views, good or bad.

One idea for location would be countries. Instead of the usual cities, do countries. It may require more administration of market size, but its just an idea...

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe go with the merge idea by combining Owner and GM role. This person would be the purse strings. The Manager would of course set lineups and bug the owner for more money to sign that big FA

Not sure how the fans would work, but the Local Press idea was a good one.

Under this setup, not my ideas just a synthesis of what I personally thought were very good ideas, you would have the following:

Owner/GM - controls money, fights to get a profit
Manager - sets lineups, and fights owner to get those big named high paid players
Local Press - writing articles for their team. summaries, as well as opinion pieces. highlight minor leagues etc.

Curious as to how this plays out, keep us updated. If it werent for time constraints I would be interested myself. Good luck.

I would be more then happy to see this work out, and maybe join as a General Manager. E-mail me at usblootp@aol.com. Or talk to me on AIM at usblootp, and we can discuss things...

Thumbs up

I'm always for fiction as much as possible in a fictious league.

Go for the made up country!

Another option would be to, instead of a regional league, do a "Region League".

i.e. American Southwest, Great Lakes, Eastern Europe, UK & Ireland, etc. Each region would have a team.

Just brainstorming a bit here...

hehe No I meant real life is too hectic for me to join another league right now in any capacity. If I had this graduate school completed (2 more quarters thank God! ) then I would love to be part some way.

Owner Idea

I have an idea. You could start off with finding the 16 owners. Then the owners could come up with a list of things he/she is looking for to build the team.

-team strategy: pitching oriented (like the Braves), hitting/speed (like the Rockies),power (like the Cubs), etc.

-manager attributes: aggressive hit/run, small ball/sac bunts, etc.

-anything else (this is just an idea)

The owners then could suggest possible names to the commish that he/she would like to be their GM/manager.

Ketsuen, I like your ideas a lot

Actually what I was going to do is from everyone who joined, I'd take those I know would be good owners and I'd let them select their GM and manager. I wouldn't make them suggest to me, I'd let them hire whoever they wanted from the available pool of guys (see what I mean?). That way the pitching/offense style would automatically reflect those of the owner, as the owner would choose someone who shares his vision. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say

As for manager attributes, I was juggling with the idea that the managers would setup their profile, and it couldn't be edited afterwards.

I'm also looking for a name for the league (as I'm designing a web site right now)... I want a 2-letter abbreviation (and no _BL, please)... so far the best thing I came up with is Beta Baseball. Remember, unconventional...
