NABL Needs A Damn Good Owner

The North American Baseball League - NABL - has is looking for a solid owner to take over a long-struggling franchise.

The New Orleans Mardi Gras (formerly the Cincinnati Reds/Roses) are available. The franchise has struggled throughout its existance, finishing in the upper tier of the National League only 8 times in 36 seasons, with 2 pennants and 1 title to show for their efforts.

New Orleans is a franchise desperately in need of a long-term plan. If I was taking over the franchise, I would plan for 4 seasons of crap play, trading everyone on the roster for picks, and then bulk up on young guns with an eye to be competitive for the 1942 season and then try to take a title in 1943. That's 5 seasons of wheeling and dealing, of scanning rosters for young gems who are being ignored and figuring out which teams will be crappy and when, and trying to get picks for that season. Most of this can be accomplished in the off-season week, with the seasons weeks (2 of them), being mostly auto-pilot, just making sure there are enough warm bodies on the roster to field a team. Around 1942 though, a more hands-on approach would be needed.

The good news, of course, in that the NABL, those 5 seasons will fly by in a mere 15 weeks...

The league was started on the premise that traditional leagues take way, way too long to complete a season. The NABL pops off a year every 3 weeks, so if your team has to rebuild, you wont spend the next year or two of your life watching your team suck - four or five months of real-time at most can change a team from the basement to the top (or vice-versa, as your team ages).

Given this pace, only the true fanatics among us should apply...

If you know that you are a true fanatic, know that you will have the time to keep up with the league, know that you love historical simming, then the NABL will be the best damn thing you have ever been in. What really makes it so good is the amazing owners who give a damn about their teams and who
participate - not just sim in and sim out but by writing, submitting comments, etc.

We started with the 1901 season in November 2002 with 16 teams involved with an initial draft and prior to the 1905 season (March, 2003), the league converted to OOTP v5 and prior to the 1924 season (April, 2004), v6. We use real players imported via the Lahman Database, and strive to faithfully re-create baseball history with the noted exception that Negro League players have been integrated into the league since 1920.

While during the season most teams are fairly hands-off (once depth charts are filled in, its just injuries to worry about), trades and the draft are THE KEYS to winning in this league. Most teams build via the draft, but when a trade does happen - only a handful a season - they are usually blockbusters.

We are in the midst of our 37th season and have one of the richest histories around.

If anyone is interested in either team please check out the league site and the rules, and then get back to me.

When sending me an email, let me know your OOTP experience, any leagues you have been in or are currently in (URLs included - I prefer to get recommendations from other Commishes or owners I know in leagues an applicant is in, in order to avoid constant team turnover).

Cheers,

Dean Gordon

NABL is one of the best leagues around that I have been in. The league is fast paced and has 15 great owners currently. And the rebuilding process is not that bad, take a look at the Yankees (the team I own) and you will now I speak from knowledge of rebuilding.......

As the owner of the Norfolk Clippers and two time WS champs (yeah, it was a long time ago) the league is hands down one of the best around. Come and take a look.

Without question this is the best league in all of OOTP. If you could only be in 1 online league then this is the one!
