The Milwaukee Brewers (1969 - ? ? ? )

(MILWAUKEE - OCTOBER 1, 1968) - MILWAUKEE receives an expansion team in 1969. The Seattle Pilots are never to be, and the Mariners will come into the league in 1977 with the Blue Jays.

BREWERS SHORT ON TALENT, HIGH ON HOPES
(MILWAUKEE - APRIL 1, 1969) - The Milwaukee Brewers, as most expansion teams are, have little depth, especially when it comes to starting pitching. The farm system has a few nuggets, but a lot more fools gold. The answer is to make some bold trades early and reduce the payroll, while improving the minor league systems. 1969 and 1970 will be tough, but the organization firmly believes the team can contend in 2-3 years.

In a front office shakeup, the Brewers named an entirely new staff.
HITTING COACH - Dennis Bednarz (Age 50 - signed through 1971) - Average
PITCHING COACH - Jeffrey Mathieu (Age 57 - 1972) - Good
SCOUTING DIRECTOR - Brian Auer (Age 45 - 1970) - Average with hitters, OK with pitchers
AAA MANAGER - Donald Carrillo (Age 51 - 1971) - Outstanding with hitters. Good with pitchers
AA MANAGER - Alan Anderson (Age 53 - 1972) - Excellent with hitters. Decent with pitchers.
A MANAGER - Markus Brown (Age 46 - 1971) - Excellent with hitters. Good with pitchers.

SHAKING UP THE ROSTER

BREWERS DUMP SALARY, BUILD FARM SYSTEM
APRIL 1 - New York (N) gets :P Mike Marshall $ 4,071,429 - Signed through 1969) and 1B Greg Goosen ($ 350,000 - 1969/ARB eligible)
Milwaukee gets : 3B Wayne Garrett, P Gary Gentry and SS Al Weis
ANALYSIS - The Brewers dump Marshall's salary ($4,071,429) and pick up a third baseman for the future in Garrett. Weis will be a bench player, and Gentry will be giving time to develop at AAA.

Cleveland gets : LF Steve Whitaker and SS Ray Oyler
Milwaukee gets : SS Eddie Leon and $100,000 cash.
ANALYSIS - Leon could be a short-term answer at short. He will have time to develop at AA. Oyler will not be missed, and Whitaker would have had a hard time getting past Walton.

San Diego gets : 1B Don Mincher, SS Gordy Lund and P Marty Pattin
Milwaukee gets : 1B Nate Colbert, P Johnny Podres, P Steve Arlin, P Clay Kirby and $1,000,000 cash.
ANALYSIS - Mincher and his $3 million salary head west. Colbert will take his place immediately and be expected to anchor the middle of the batting order. Lund was disposable with the Eddie Leon trade. Pattin was tough to part with, but Podres and Kirby can eat up those innings for this season. Arlin will head to the minors, with an anticipated callup in September. The $1 million cash will be used to shore up the team's bottom line.

Oakland gets : P John Gelnar
Milwaukee gets : P Rollie Fingers and $1,000,000 cash.
ANALYSIS - This could be the trade that makes the Brewers click down the road. Gelnar was slated to be the closer for Milwaukee in 1969, but the job will be given to Jim Bouton. Fingers will work long relief and likely assume the closer's role in 1970. Once again, a million dollars will be used for the bottom line and to make some free agent acquisitions during the year.

APRIL 4 - The Milwaukee Brewers acquired OF Frank Tepedino off waivers today from the New York Yankees. Tepedino, who played briefly in 1967 for the Yanks, will report to A Danville.

APRIL 5- The Milwaukee Brewers, continuing to shore up their farm system, signed P Ricky Clark off waivers from California. Clark, a 1.5-star prospect, will report to AAA Evansville.

THE 1969 MILWAUKEE BREWERS - BUILDING FOR TOMORROW

(MILWAUKEE - APRIL 1, 1969) - With a payroll of just over $20.5 million, $12 million less than the next highest team, the Milwaukee Brewers are expected to struggle in their inaugaral campaign. The team has some hope in their farm system, but by all accounts, the team cannot expect to contend until 1971 or 1972 at the earliest. "We are not looking for a quick fix, and we won't spend our way to contention," said GM Aaron Kramer. "The answer lies in player development and the draft". Here is a breakdown of each position for the Brew Crew
STARTING PITCHING (GRADE - C- )
Johnny Podres - At 36, there is not much left in the tank
Clay Kirby - Kirby makes his major league debut with Milwaukee, and is expected to be a number 3 or 4 starter
Diego Segui - The anchor of the staff
Steve Barber - A project to say the least, Barber is penciled in as the number 2 starter
Gene Brabender - Brabender tries to make good on the promise he had as a Baltimore Oriole for the past three season
BULLPEN (GRADE - B- )
Mopup Relievers
Rollie Fingers - Fingers will work in long relief, bring groomed for the closer's role
Bucky Brandon - Never able to live up the hype in Boston, Brandon gets a new lease on life in Brew City
Middle Reliever
Gary Bell - Could be an emergency starter if needed
John Morris - Could use more time in the minors, but has to perform with an expansion team
Setup Reliever
Jack Aker - Many thought he would be the closer
John O'donoghue - Could start if needed
Closer
Jim Bouton - Will hold down the job until Fingers is ready, but doubtful he will get many save opportunities
CATCHERS (GRADE - D )
Merritt Ranew - Wins starting job by default
Jerry Mcnertney - Will catch 1-2 times a week and pinchhit
INFIELD (GRADE - C )
1B Nate Colbert - At 23, this is the only bona fide rookie stud on the team
2B Tommy Harper - Speed to die for, but can struggle with OBP
SS John Kennedy - Has speed, but a lot of untapped and dwindling potential
3B Rich Rollins - A stop gap measure by any defintion
SS Al Weis - A one-year reserve
SS Gus Gil - See Al Weis
OUTFIELD (GRADE - C )
LF Tommy Davis - Age and injuries have eroded some of his skills, but he can still hit. Will likely be trade bait
CF Wayne Comer - This might be his last time to make an impact in the major leagues
RF Steve Hovley - A potential All-Star if the breaks go his way
Mike Hegan - Can fill in at first if needed
Jose Vidal - Simply taking up space on the bench

DOWN ON THE FARM
With the top-ranked farm system in baseball, the Brewers have some hopes, but none of these players will contribute before next season.
AAA - Evansville
AA - San Antonio
A - Danville
TOMORROW'S BREWERS
1 - P Dick Bates 23 (Danville) - Could be in the bullpen next year
2 - 3B Wayne Garrett 21 (Danville) - Will replace Rollins as soon as possible if he develops
3 - P Skip Lockwood 22 (Evansville) - If Podres or Kirby falter, he will likely get the first call
4 - LF Danny Walton 21 (Danville) - Needs to improve his BA and OBP
5 - SS Fred Stanley 21 (Danville) - Will likely not be able to climb past Leon on the depth chart
6 - P Gary Gentry 22 (Evansville) - Milwaukee would like to see him get a full year in AAA.
7 - SS Eddie Leon 22 (San Antonio) - Part of the ongoing search for a permanent SS in Milwaukee

POSITION - 6th, 5.5 GB behind Oakland
DIVISION LEADERS
AL EAST - Boston - Baltimore (10-7)
AL WEST - Oakland (12-5)
NL EAST - Pittsburgh (12-5)
NL WEST - Houston (12-5)

Home Record: 4 Wins, 7 Losses
Away Record: 5 Wins, 5 Losses
1 Run Games Record: 3 Wins, 5 Losses
X-Innings Record: 1 Wins, 1 Losses
Record vs LHP: 2 Wins, 3 Losses
Record vs RHP: 7 Wins, 9 Losses
Payroll: $21,617,143 (24th)
Fan Interest: 65/100 (T-10th)
Batting AVG: .260 (6th)
Homeruns: 22 (4th)
Walks: 51 (21st)
Stolen Bases: 41 (1st)

Pitching ERA: 3.93 (18th)
Opponents AVG: .246 (11th)
HRs Allowed: 21 (22nd)
Walks Allowed: 81 (22nd)
Runs Allowed: 107 (24th)
(MILWAUKEE, WI - April 22, 1969) - The Milwaukee Brewers remain a competitive expansion team, with a 9-12 record, but have definitely struggled on offense and with their pitching. Other than super rookie Nate Colbert (.468-8-17) and catcher Merritt Ranew (.299-4-21), the Brew Crew has been flat at the plate. Tommy Davis (.136-0-8) and Tommy Harper (.216-2-3) have been extreme disappointments. John Kennedy (.387-1-5, 12 SB) can hit, but he has committed seven errors. SS Chico Ruiz (.266-0-6) was acquired to take his place in the lineup.
As for the pitching, Clay Kirby (2-2, 2.05 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) and Gene Brabender (1-2, 2.33, 1.44) have been more than adequate. Diego Segui (1-3, 4.11, 1.30) has racked up a ton of strikeouts but always seems to have a bad inning in each game. Steve Barber (1-2, 5.01, 1.54) has not hit his rhythm, and Johnny Podres (1-2, 6.56, 1.71) has a few starts to work things out before he heads to the bullpen and long relief
In the bullpen, Rollie Fingers (1-0, 1.08. 0.48) and Gary Bell (1-0, 0.96, 1.07) have been spectacular. If no one in the minors can come up to help the starting rotation, Fingers would be a prime candidate to make a spot start. He recently worked a 7-inning stint in relief against California to win a game. Jim Bouton (0-0, 1.69, 0.75, 5 SV) has been nearly unhittable in being the closer. Unfortunately, a team needs more than three relievers. John O'Donoghue (0-0, 5.40, 1.20) has been the most reliable of the remaining firemen. Jack Hamilton (0-0, 7.72, 3.43) has done nothing since being picked up off waivers, and Jack Aker (0-0, 7.94, 2.65) has slipped mightily in the past week. John Morris (0-1, 14.40, 2.20) has about one or two chances left to turn it around, or he could be headed to AAA or the waiver wire. If a position player in the minors or a free agent could be picked up to improve the Brewer offense, Morris would almost certainly be gone.

TRANSACTIONS
April 6 - Johnny Podres was put on the trading block and placed on waivers. (NOTE - Podres is not a long-term answer at his age. Skip Lockwood and Gary Gentry could be brought up to replace him).
April 7 - Tommy Davis and Al Weis were put on the trading block. This is simply to see if there is interest.
April 8 - Just as he was heating up, Wayne Comer was put on the DL. He slammed into the outfield wall, separating his shoulder. Look for a return in mid-to-late June. Danny Walton was promoted from A Danville Brewers to the active roster.
April 9 - Free agent Jack Hamilton has been signed to a contract of $750,000 per year, for 1 years. He was sent to Evansville, while Bob Meyer was placed on waivers.
April 10 - Bob Meyer was placed on waivers.
April 11 - Bob Meyer was put on the trading block. The Hamilton deal opened up some trade possibilities.
April 12 - It was VEERY busy in the front office. First, the Brewers pulled off a trade with Cincinnati
Cincinnati gets : P Bucky Brandon
Milwaukee gets : 2B Chico Ruiz and $300,000 cash.
Danny Walton was sent back down to Danville (A).
Jack Hamilton was put on the 40-man roster and promoted to the big leagues. Chico Ruiz was put on the 40-man roster and joined the Brewers. Free agent Mike Ferraro was signed to a minor league contract and sent to Danville (A). Wayne Garrett was promoted from A Danville Brewers to AA San Antonio Brewers.
April 15 - Gary Gentry was sent down from AAA Evansville Triplets to AA San Antonio Brewers. Things have not been working out the way we planned for Gentry. He was 0-2 at Evansville with a 6.05 ERA. The main culprite is the 28 hits he has given up in less than 19 innings. His K-to-BB ratio was good at 25:6, but not enough to stop the hit parade.
Waiver Claims - Gary Boyd has been claimed off waivers from Cleveland and placed on the active roster. Jose Pena has been claimed off waivers from Cincinnati and placed on the active roster. Both were sent down to Danville (A).
April 17 - Gary Boyd was promoted from A Danville Brewers to AA San Antonio Brewers. This seems to be a better spot for him.
April 21 - Gary Boyd was promoted from AA San Antonio Brewers to AAA Evansville Triplets. He has found a niche we hope here.
Gary Gentry was promoted from AA San Antonio Brewers to AAA Evansville Triplets. We needed pitching help at AAA, and we want to see if he and Skip Lockwood are ready for call ups. Steve Barber and John O'Donoghue were put on the trading block. This is simply to gauge the trade interest in either one. So far, NONE of our players on the trading block have generated a nibble.

Brewers Transactions (april 25 - June 23)

APRIL 25 - Jose Pena was promoted from Danville (A) to San Antonio (AA). Jim Gosger was placed on waivers. NOTES - Pena is not going to be much a factor in the major leagues (with only a 1-star rating). Jim Gosger provided no hope for the future.

APRIL 26 - Al Weis was sent down Evansville (AAA). Wayne Comer was promoted from to the active roster. Ken Brett has been claimed off waivers from Cleveland and placed on the active roster. NOTES - Comer has recovered from his injury. Ken Brett could develop into a middle-of-the road reliever in the future.

APRIL 27 - Jim Gosger has been claimed off waivers by Washington. NOTE - I don't think anyone cried in the front office of the Brewers over this move.

MAY 5 - John O'donoghue was sent to Evansville (AAA). Larry Haney was promoted from San Antonio (AA) to Milwaukee. Billy Williams was put on the 40-man roster and promoted from Evansville (AAA) to Milwaukee. Bob Meyer was placed on waivers.
TRADE - The Los Angeles Dodgers acquire SS John Kennedy and P Jack Hamilton from the Brewers for CF Bill Buckner, 2B Steve Garvey, RF Bill Russell, 3B Bill Sudakis and $3,000,000 cash. Bill Russell was put on the 40-man roster and sent to San Antonio (AA). Steve Garvey and Bill Buckner were put on the 40-man roster and sent to Danville (A). Bill Sudakis and Jack Hamilton were sent to Evansville (AAA). NOTE - This trade could provide the foundation for the Milwaukee Brewers in the first half of the 1970s. I firmly expect three of the players to be major contributors to the growth of this team.

MAY 7 - Bob Meyer was removed from the 40 man roster. Al Weis was promoted from Evansville (AAA) to the active roster. NOTE - Bob Meyer is a tough one to figure out. At this point, it may be best for the team to see what it can get on the trade market for him.

MAY 9 - CF Fred Rico has been claimed off waivers from New York Mets and sent to Evansville (AAA). NOTE - Rico is a player who could fill a valuable bench role in the future.

MAY 10 - CF Fred Rico was sent down Evansville (AAA) to San Antonio (AA). Bob Meyer was put on the DL. NOTE - Bob Meyer, who was about to be let go, takes a ball off the face, breaking his jaw. He is not expected back until the All-Star break.

MAY 12 - Rollie Fingers has been signed to a contract extension, $2,500,000 per year, for 3 years. Jim Bouton has been signed to a contract extension, $1,500,000 per year, for 3 years. Clay Kirby has been signed to a contract extension, $900,000 per year, for 2 years. Wayne Comer has been signed to a contract extension, $1,200,000 per year, for 3 years. Chico Ruiz has been signed to a contract extension, $940,000 per year, for 4 years.
NOTE - The Brewers decide to make a committment to the future. At the same, Fingers is starting to supplant Jim Bouton as the team's reliever.

MAY 13 - Mike Hegan and Tommy Harper were put on the trading block.

MAY 21 - Bill Edgerton was promoted San Antonio (AA) to Evansville (AAA).

MAY 24 - Diego Segui has been signed to a contract extension, $6,500,000 per year, for 5 years. NOTE - Segui is the ace of the staff right now, and there does not appear to be a successor in the farm system. If someone else develops, don't be suprised if Diego is moved at the trading deadline.

MAY 25 - Free agent 2B Bill Mazeroski has been signed to a contract of $500,000 per year, for 1 years. He was placed on the 40-man roster. C Larry Haney and OF Billy Williams were sent down to Evansville (AAA). P John O'donoghue was promoted from Evansville (AAA) to Milwaukee.
NOTES - Mazeroski provides some insurance for the infield, while Haney and Williams had nothing to show for their stay in the bigs. O'Donoghue was needed to give the bullpen a fresh arm.

MAY 26 - TRADE The New York Mets acquire SS Al Weis from the Milwaukee Brewers for P Jesse Hudson and $1,500,000 cash. Hudson was put on the 40-man roster and sent down to Danville (A). OF Danny Walton was promoted from Danville (A) to Milwaukee. NOTE - Weis was not going to stay past the end of the year, so we tried to pick up something of value. Hudson could become a real nice addition to the bullpen in 1970 or 1971 as he moves up the ladder. Walton is needed for some late-inning PH duties and to relieve an outfield that is getting tired.

MAY 29 - CF Fred Rico was sent down from San Antonio (AA) to Danville (A).

JUNE 2 - Jim Bouton was put on the trading block. RF Cesar Geronimo has been claimed off waivers from New York Mets and placed on the active roster. NOTE - Geromimo is a calculated risk. If he can work on his hitting in the AAA and AA levels, he could be a cheap, but productive, pickup. Bouton has been replaced by Fingers as the team's reliever.

JUNE 3 - RF Cesar Geronimo was sent down to Danville (A). P Jerry Stephenson and OF Billy Williams were placed on waivers.

JUNE 5 - OF Billy Williams and P Jerry Stephenson were removed from the 40 man roster. Stephenson has been claimed off waivers by Los Angeles. Williams has been claimed off waivers by New York (AL). CF Fred Rico and CF
Cesar Geronimo were put on the 40-man roster. NOTE - In all honesty, Stephenson and Williams were not going to make or break the Milwaukee Brewers. It was time to make room for youth.

JUNE 6 - John O'donoghue was put on the DL. P Steve Arlin was promoted from Evansville (AAA) to Milwaukee. NOTE - Our search for fresh arms in the bullpen continues

JUNE 7 - Free agent C Ellie Rodriguez has been signed to a contract of $320,000 per year, for 1 years. He was placed on the DL. NOTE - All of the doctors say Ellie is done with a torn hip muscle. We believe he has a chance to recover and come back in 1970.

JUNE 14 - Free agent P Pedro Ramos has been signed to a contract of $350,000 per year, for 1 years. P Gary Timberlake was placed on waivers. NOTE - Ramos would not head to the minors, so Pittsburgh let him go.

JUNE 16 - P Gary Timberlake was placed on waivers. P Billy Mccool has been claimed off waivers from Chicago (N) and placed on the active roster. NOTE - The search for fresh arms in the bullpen....oh you know the story.

JUNE 17 - P Bill Edgerton and C Freddie Velazquez were placed on waivers.

JUNE 18 - P Gary Timberlake was removed from the 40 man roster. P Billy Mccool has been signed to a contract extension, $800,000 per year, for 3 years and was placed on the 40-man roster. 3B Gus Gil was placed on waivers. P Pedro Ramos was put on the trading block. NOTE - The Brewers are continuing to try and lock in their young talent long-term.

JUNE 19 - C Freddie Velazquez was removed from the 40 man roster. 3B Bill Sudakis was put on the 40-man roster and promoted from Evansville (AAA) to Milwaukee. 3B Gus Gil was sent down to Evansville (AAA). P Gary Gentry was put on the trading block. P Bill Edgerton has been claimed off waivers by Atlanta. NOTE - The biggest move of the day was Gentry. He has said he only wants to play for a winner, so the writing is on the wall.

JUNE 20 - P Pedro Ramos was put on the 40-man roster. P Steve Arlin was sent down from to Evansville (AAA). P Billy Mccool was promoted from Evansville (AAA) to Milwaukee.

JUNE 21 - SS Eddie Leon was promoted from San Antonio (AA) to Evansville (AAA). 3B Gus Gil was placed on waivers. P Johnny Podres has been signed to a contract extension, $1,000,000 per year, for 3 years. 2B Bill Mazeroski was put on the trading block. P Ken Brett has been signed to a contract extension, $1,000,000 per year, for 2 years.

JUNE 22 - SS Eddie Leon was sent down from Evansville (AAA) to San Antonio (AA). C Larry Haney and C Freddie Velazquez was placed on waivers.

JUNE 23 - 3B Gus Gil has been claimed off waivers by San Diego. NOTE - The call up of Sudakis meant the end of the road for Gus in Milwaukee.

Brewers Blog (6-27-1969)

JUNE 24 (Lost to Oakland 5-4, 37-43, 5th, 11.5 GB)
WP - Chuck Dobson (7-5, 2.16)
LP - Diego Segui (6-6, 2.43)
SV - Paul Lindblad (18)
POG - Dobson
John Morris gave up a run in the 9th to lose the game. Tommy Harper FINALLY had a break-out game, going 4-for-5. Merritt Ranew and Rich Rollins went deep. NOTES - The Cubs have claimed C Larry Haney off waivers. SS Eddie Leon was placed on the 40-man roster, leaving one opening.
JUNE 25 (Lost to Oakland 3-1, 37-44, 5th, 12.5 GB)
WP - Marcel Lachemann (2-0, 2.76)
LP - John Morris (1-2, 4.50)
SV - Paul Lindblad (20)
POG - Sal Bando
A typical outing for Steve Barber. He was sailing along until the 6th when he gave up three runs, including a 2-run triple to Danny Cater. Barber is now 0-2 with an 8.14 ERA in his last four starts. He and Gene Brabender are definitely bringing the starting staff down. NOTES - 1B Nate Colbert (2-for-21), OF Mike Hegan (3-for-23) and 2B Chico Ruiz (3-for-30) are all in massive slumps.
JUNE 26 (Lost to Kansas City 15-11, 37-45, 5th, 13.5 GB)
WP - Moe Drabowksy (4-1, 4.17 ERA)
LP - Johnny Podres (4-6, 3.48 ERA)
POG - 1B Nate Colbert
Trying to avoid a fourth straight loss, Milwaukee jumped out to a 4-1 lead, before the Brewer defense collapsed, committing four runs. Bill Sudakis, who connected for a home run, made two costly errors. Kansas City scored four runs in the 4th, five in the 5th, and four more in the 6th. Milwaukee would rally with five runs in the 9th to make it somewhat close.
NOTES - Nate Colbert became the first Brewer to hit two home runs in a game...C Jerry McNertney is the first Brewer to hit a pinch-hit grand slam home run...3B-SS Rich Rollins is batting .333 in his last seven games.
JUNE 27 (Lost to Minnesota 17-3, 37-46, 5th, 13.5 GB)
WP - Jim Perry (9-5, 2.88 ERA)
LP - Gene Brabender (3-10, 6.39 ERA)
POG - Leo Cardenas
The Brewers, having lost five straight, may have hit bottom. The Twins jumped on Brabender for nine runs, seven earned in 1 2/3 innings. When the rout was over, Minnesota had 22 hits, Milwaukee had three errors and Leo Cardenas had driven in seven. Brabender's performance has raised speculation his days in the starting rotation will soon come to an end.
NOTES - Steve Hovley (34) and Tommy Harper (32) continue to lead the American League in steals

UP NEXT : THE ALL-STAR BREAK

SAN ANTONIO (AA, 46-37, 2nd, 0.5 GB) - RF Bill Russell (.316-9-25) and SS Eddie Leon (.275-9-41) provide much of the offensive support for the Brewers. 3B Wayne Garrett (.247-4-20) has been a disappointment in the first half of the season.

BREWERS BLOG (July 4 - 10, 1969)

JULY 4 (WASHINGTON 3, Milwaukee 1 (11), 39-48, 5th, 15.5 GB)
WP - Darold Knowles (4-2, 2.84)
LP - Jack Aker (2-3, 5.33)
POG - Billy Champion (WASH)
Del Unser's two-run homer off Jack Aker was the decisive blow. Milwaukee had nine hits, but could never mount a rally.
NOTES - The AL Player of the Week is RF Frank Robinson (BAL). He batted .438 in 16 AB, with 2 HR and 11 RBI. The NL Player of the Week is 1B Al Oliver (PIT). He batted .438 in 16 AB, with 2 HR and 3 RBI...The Giants have suffered two major losses. SP Bob Bolin (7 weeks - strained bicep) and Gaylord Perry (4 weeks - Elbow) have been lost. San Fran is 10 1/2 games out of first and going nowhere fast.

BREWERS MAKE MAJOR TRADE - The Milwaukee Brewers, struggling to stay out of the cellar, made a move for the future today, trading RP Jim Bouton to the Chicago Cubs for P Dave Lemonds and CF Oscar Gamble. The disappointing Cubs are 39-54 and trail Pittsburgh by 29.5 games. Lemonds is on the DL for the remainder of the season with a torn rotator cuff. Both he and Gamble were sent to Danville (A) and added to the 40-man roster. To take Bouton's place on the Milwaukee roster, RP John O'Donoghue was called up from Evansville (AAA).

JULY 6 (WASHINGTON 11, Milwaukee 10, 39-49, 5th, 15.5 GB
WP - Dave Baldwin (5-2, 2.31)
LP - Gary Bell (4-3, 3.97)
SV - Darold Knowles (17)
POG - Frank Howard (WASH)
Washington led 5-0, before Milwaukee scored ten unanswered runs. The highlight was back-to-back home runs for Tommy Davis and Steve Hovley, Davis' being a grand slam. The Senators then scored six times in the 8th off John O'Donoghue and Gary Bell to steal the lead back, and eventually the win.
NOTES - A trade for Houston OF Bob Watson was rejected. The 'Stros wanted P Gary Bell...CF Oscar Gamble was signed to a 4-year, $900,000 extension...The Brewers will host Boston for three games, then the AL East-leading Orioles for four

BREWERS MAKE SECOND TRADE IN TWO DAYS - The Milwaukee Brewers, who made a major deal with the Cubs on Monday, struck again today, sending SP Gary Gentry, who was at Evansville (AAA), for Oakland pitcher Jim Roland. Roland, who went to the All-Star Game, is 10-1, and will replace Steve Barber in the starting rotation. To make room on the 40-man roster, Roland was sent to Evansville, while OF Jose Vidal will be cleared through waivers. OF Oscar Gamble was called up to take Vidal's spot for now.

JULY 6 (Boston 5, MILWAUKEE 3 (12), 39-50, 5th, 16.5 GB)
WP - Sparky Lyle (6-2, 3.04)
LP - Rollie Fingers (5-6, 2.28)

ATTENDANCE REPORT
1-Oakland (1,575,840)
2-Baltimore (1,563,006)
3-Pittsburgh (1,557,522)
4-Detroit (1,517,257)
5-Atlanta (1,512,774)
Milwaukee is 14th (1,308,127). Montreal is dead last (1,177,461), raising speculation they may move to Dallas or Seattle after this season.

JULY 7 - Boston 7, MILWAUKEE 5, 39-51, 6th, 17.5 GB)
WP - Dick Ellsworth (4-3, 2.55)
LP - Clay Kirby (8-5, 2.75)
SV - Juan Pizarro (1)
POG - Ellswoth
Trailing 6-0, the Brewers scored five times in the 8th, but fell short in their bid to avoid the cellar.
NOTES - Oakland OF Reggie Jackson connected for three home runs at Cleveland, giving him 31 for the year...OF Jose Vidal cleared waivers and was sent to Evansville (AAA). P Jim Roland and RP Billy McCool were recalled from AAA, to make the 25-man roster complete. OF Oscar Ganble was sent to Danville (A), and replaced by SS Eddie Leon on the roster

JULY 8 (MILWAUKEE 9, Boston 8 - 40-51, 6th, 17.5 GB)
WP - Pedro Ramos (1-0, 7.72)
LP - Bill Landis (3-3, 4.60)
SV - Rollie Fingers (6)
POG - Billy Conigliaro (Boston)
Jim Roland's Milwaukee debut was a disaster as he gave up eight runs, and four home runs, in 3 2/3 innings. The Brewers would rally, though, from an 8-2 deficit with five in the fourth and two more in the 6th.
NOTES - SP Bob Meyer was activated from the DL and sent to San Antonio (AA)...P Gene Brabender was placed on waivers today, as the Brewers attempt to remove him from the 40-man roster. His $1.1 million salary through 1970 would also be nice to remove from the franchise.

JULY 9 - MILWAUKEE 6, Baltimore 4 - 41-51, 6th, 17.5 GB)
WP - Johnny Podres (5-6, 3.22)
LP - Jim Hardin (7-7, 3.91)
SV - Rollie Fingers (8)
POG - Podres
Tommy Harper and Merritt Ranew each drove in two runs as the Brewers handed the AL-East leading Orioles (58-34) their second straight loss.
NOTES - The Cubs have put a claim on P Gene Brabender...SP Bob Meyer was promoted to Evansville (AAA), while CF Oscar Gamble was promoted to San Antonio (AA)...The Twins have placed RP Al Worthington on waivers. His $1.9 million contract does not appeal to us

JULY 10 - MILWAUKEE 6, Baltimore 4 - 42-51, 5th, 17.5 GB)
WP - Skip Lockwood (1-1, 4.20)
LP - Tom Phoebus (10-5, 3.76)
SV - Rollie Fingers (9)
POG - Nate Colbert (MIL)
Colbert hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Brewers won their third straight over the Birds. Colbert has hit .500 with three HRs and ten RBIS in his last five games. Lockwood won his first major league game.
NOTES - The Expos have put a claim in on Brabender, meaning he will likely be gone in the next day.

TAKING STOCK OF THE SEASON - July 26, 1969

OVERVIEW OF THE SEASON SO FAR
With a record of 48-60, the Milwaukee Brewers are easily on their way to a losing season in their inaugaral campaign. As an expansion team, that was expected, but the signs are there that the foundation for a good team are there. One factor in the losing record is Milwaukee's record at home (23-32), which has been a major disappointment. County Stadium has not been friendly to the Crew, while they have gone 25-28 on the road. Their record in 1-run decisions (18-22) is fairly encouraging for a first year team. In extra innings, they are 8-8. They have struggled against lefties, going 11-16. With the league's lowest payroll ($21,441,429) and fan interest remaining strong (69/100 - 12th), there is optimism in the Beer City.
OFFENSE - Milwaukee can hit, as their .259 batting average ranks seventh in all of baseball. They need to improve their power numbers (87 HR - 11th) and discipline (289 walks - 21st). They lead the AL in stolen bases with 159, but, too often, run themselves into inning-ending outs or double plays as their 472 runs scored (9th) attests to.
PITCHING - The Brewers will have to make a concerted effort to improve their pitching staff if the arms in the minor leagues do not pan out. Their ERA (4.38) is the worst in the majors, having allowed an MLB-high 548 runs. They have struggled in keeping teams off the bases - opponents are batting .258 (18th), they have connected for 115 home runs (23rd), and, if they can't hit the ball, can simply work their way into a walk (402 - 21st). Milwaukee's bullpen has been abysmal, but that is usually the case with a team just starting out that can barely find enough arms to fill out the starting rotation.
Active Roster
ACTIVE ROSTER
CATCHERS
MERRITT RANEW (Age - 31) - Ranew has finally come into his own, batting .324 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs. For someone who has not played in the majors since 1965, the numbers make him a likely candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. The Brewers have little to nothing coming up in terms of catchers, so they may be looking to lock up Merritt to a long-term deal.
Jerry Mcnertney (32) - McNertney has been a pleasant surprise, batting .277 after never hitting better than .228 in a season (1967 - Chicago White Sox). He has shown a little pop in his bat as well with 4 home runs, a career high. While he will likely never be the number one catcher for a major league team, he is a valuable sub.
INFIELD
1B Nate Colbert (23) - Colbert, acquired earlier in the season from San Diego, has been a promising rookie (.299-19-67). The big question is whether he can be signed to a long-term deal. There are no real first baseman in the Brewer farm system, and Colbert is reportedly looking at a 4-5 year deal in the $5-6 million range.
2B Tommy Harper (28) - To say Harper has been a disappointment is an understatement. With a .222 BA and just 4 home runs, Tailwind Tommy has done little to reinforce the pre-season thoughts that he was "the" player on offense. His 36 stolen bases would be considerably higher if his OBP was not so woeful at .573. His large contract will make him hard to deal if he cannot work out this slump, and Steve Garvey is at least two years away from the majors.
2B Bill Mazeroski (32) - Time is running out on Maz, who has been playing in the big leagues since 1956, all with the Pirates before they let him go earlier this year. So far, his bat has not come around (.195-1-6), meaning his stay in Milwaukee will likely come to an end in the off-season.
SS Chico Ruiz (30) - Ruiz, acquired April 12 from Cincinnati, has never been much of a hitter in the majors, and this season has been no different (.216-2-29 5 SB). Sharing time with Eddie Leon, with no shortstops in the minor leagues, means the Brewers will likely target a shortstop in the amateur draft or free agent market. A 4-year contract extension ($940,000 a year) will likely keep Ruiz in the mix until something better comes along
SS Eddie Leon (22) - Leon has seen limited playing time (.333-0-1), and really needs more time in the minors. If Milwaukee could find a cheap free agent, they may make the move in order to send Leon to AAA.
3B Bill Sudakis (23) - Very few people thought Sudakis would be the prime player in the major trade Milwaukee made with the Dodgers in early May, but, so far, he is the only one to contribute at the big league level (.273-4-20). He can still have some huge batting slumps, but that is expected with a 23-year old getting his first extended play in the majors.
3B Rich Rollins (31) - Rollins has not hit much for average, but has shown some power (.238-7-36). Milwaukee would love to see Sudakis cement the starting position at the hot corner, but so far Rollins has made a case for playing time.
OUTFIELDER
RF Steve Hovley (24) - Hovley is one of the bright stars in the Milwaukee lineup (.293-8-53). He leads the AL with 37 stolen bases, and has a sparkling .743 OBP. If he can be signed up to a long-term deal, he could be the first "superstar" for the Brewer franchise.
CF Wayne Comer (25) - After failing to stick in Detroit, Comer has been given every opportunity to make a name for himself in Milwaukee...and he has failed so far (.231-9-20 18 SB .771 OBP). While he can hit the long ball, he is very inconsistent in driving in runners with a simple single or double when called upon. With Bill Buckner and Oscar Gamble showing promise in the minors, Comer may become trade bait very shortly. After signing a 3-year extension, Milwaukee has to hope Comer comes alive to allow those two future stars to mature.
LF Tommy Davis (30) - Age and injuries appear to have eroded some of Davis' skills. This is not the same player who won the National League batting titles in 1962 and 1963. With his large contract, the Brewers may be looking to move Davis, whose bat has heated up a bit lately (.263-6-46 30 SB) before the trade deadline.
LF Mike Hegan (27) - For some reason, Hegan has not received the playing time (.303-5-36) many thought he would. He can fill in at first if needed, and, if Davis is traded, he would be the new left fielder on a permanent basis. Until then, he can expect to play every two or three days and pinch hit in between starts.

STARTING ROTATION
Johnny Podres (36) - There are many who believe that Podres is done in his 15th season in the majors. His numbers would tell you otherwise (6-8, 3.88, 1.22 WHIP). As a lefty, Podres is invaluable to Milwaukee. Of the three pitchers acquired from San Diego in the Don Mincher trade, Podres has paid off the most so far with the least expected initially. After signing a 3-year contract extension for just $1 million a year, Podres will become a player-coach in essence for this embryonic team.
Clay Kirby (21) - Kirby is one of the arms Milwaukee will need to hope stays healthy to become a contender. His numbers so far are very promising (9-7, 2.88, 1.18). With a little more run support, he could be a 20-game winner very soon.
Jim Roland (27) - Roland has gone 3-0 since the Oakland A's traded him to Milwaukee in early July. Many baseball observers are still wondering what the A's were thinking, since Roland (13-1, 2.94, 1.24) is a legitimate Cy Young candidate with an expansion team, while Oakland is riding the top of the AL West.
Diego Segui (31) - If Milwaukee could only score more, Segui would have double digit wins by now. He is only two wins away from tying his career high (9 with the 1963 Kansas City A's) and should pass that number in the next month or so (7-7, 2.88, 1.23). Milwaukee will be hard pressed not to trade Segui in late August if the right deal comes along. With a 5-year contract extension ($6.5 million), some teams may be scared off though.
Skip Lockwood (22) - One day he looks great; the next, he looks like he belongs back in AAA. Such is the life for a 22-year old rookie with an expansion team. Lockwood is a huge part of the Brewers' future, along with Kirby, Ken Brett, Steve Arlin and Dave Lemonds. (2-3, 4.72, 1.31)
RELIEVERS
Rollie Fingers (22) - Fingers is a candidate for Rookie of the Year (5-6, 2.21, 12 SV, 0.91). Many "experts" think Oakland will regret this trade down the road, while Milwaukee has locked him up through the 1972 season at $2.5 milion per campaign.
Bill Wilson (26) - Wilson was picked up from Philadelphia on July 12 for Pedro Ramos. So far, this deal has helped the Brewers more than the Phils. Wilson (6-4, 4.62, 12 SV, 1.62) has been a valuable set-up man for Fingers, and could be an anchor in the bullpen for some time.
John Morris (27) - Morris was a gamble for the Brewers, who some thought should have been sent to the minors. His arm (1-3, 4.96, 1 SV, 1.68) has shown signs of tiring as of late, and he may have hit his ceiling for innings pitched. Milwaukee will have to be careful with him through the last 50 games.
Billy Mccool (25) - McCool was picked up off the scrap heap in June when the Cubs let him go. Milwaukee signed him to a 3-year contract, but have yet to see any signs that this was a good move (0-0, 7.59, 1 SV, 1.97)
John O'donoghue (31) - O'Donoghue wanted to be a starter for the Brewers, but could not find a spot in the rotation. His conversion to the bullpen has been rocky to say the least (0-1, 7.54, 1.72).
Gary Bell (32) - Bell can start if needed, and is a useful player in eating up innings when games are decided early. There are signs that Milwaukee has plans to use him more in the final two months of the season (4-3, 4.20, 1.28).
Jack Aker (29) - Aker has been a disappointment, allowing some huge outbursts when called upon (2-4, 6.55, 1.69). It is doubtful he will stick with the team in 1970.

DOWN ON THE FARM
EVANSVILLE (AAA) - 70-38
SAN ANTONIO (AA) - 63-45
DANVILLE (A) - 53-55
MILWAUKEE TOP 10 PROSPECTS
1 - MR Dick Bates (23) - With a 1-3 record at Danville (A), Bates may be a surprise at the top of this chart, but his 3.08 ERA and 26-11 K-BB ratio show why there is so much promise in this young man. He is not projected to make an impact in Milwaukee until 1971 at the earliest.
2 - Dave Lemonds (21) - Acquired from the Cubs in July in the Oscar Gamble trade, Lemonds is out for the season with a torn rotator cuff. He has shown promise so far (7-6, 2.23, 105.0 IP) with 92 strikeouts. The plan is for him to play at AA next year, and work his way back.
3 - 3B Wayne Garrett (21) - Garrett has performed well at San Antonio (AA) so far (.264-7-34), and will likely be in the mix for third base in spring training next year.
4 - Bill Sudakis (23) - Sudakis is already in the majors, so his time on this list will come to an end soon.
5 - Oscar Gamble (19) - The Brewers are very high on Gamble, who the Cubs may regret trading. He was acquired in July and has torn up AA so far (.306-10-30). He may push Wayne Comer as soon as next year, and will get some playing time this September.
6 - Steve Garvey (20) - Garvey has struggled a bit at Danville (A) (.246-0-17), but the Brewers remain hopeful he will replace Tommy Harper in the next few years.
7 - SP Skip Lockwood (22) - Lockwood, like Sudakis, can no longer be considered a prospect, unless something dramatic changes. He is in the bigs for good for now SP 5 6 7 Majors 2-3 4.72 34.1 38 7 13
8 - CL Rollie Fingers (22) - See Lockwood
9 - MR Jesse Hudson (21) - Acquired from the Mets, Hudson is projected to make a bid for the Brewer bullpen in 1971 at the earliest. With a 2-0 record and a microscopic 0.59 ERA, he has shown a lot of promise, but needs more innings (15.1 so far)
10 - Bill Buckner (19) - Buckner, like Garvey, has not found his stroke in A ball (.239-0-21), and has fallen behind Gamble in the outfield depth chart. When he makes the major leagues, he will likely be moved to another position (left field or right).
OTHERS TO WATCH - SP Mickey Fuentes (AAA - 11-5, 2.13), SP Ken Brett (AAA - 9-3, 3.13), RF Bill Russell (AA - .308-14-44), LF Danny Walton (A - .335-15-45)

I missed this one the first time around, but like the style. I like to see GMs who build for the long term and can deal with a season or two of losing.
