Text based baseball manager game.

Check this site out when you have a moment. Baseball simulation made by a fellow Brit. Ok so its not OOTP but all the support for the genre the better!

Looking at the screens (not even going to have anything close to a chance to try the game out until the weekend at least) it reminds me of a baseball sim made by a guy who really, really likes European football sims and basically wanted to port things over. He needs to realize that baseball has a LOT more in the way of stats, and a LOT LOT LOT more in the way of sports economists (not necessarily talking about financials; this is more about the game analysis aspect - you Michael Lewis lovers know who you are*). Also, there are an awful lot of goofy ratings in there that instantly make me say "okay. So what do they do and why would I care what A-Rod's Bravery is?"

I'm not saying that baseball games have nowhere left to go with Dungeons and Dragons style ability ratings. If I can get any baseball game developer to listen to me, I've got a jillion ideas to make a game the greatest ever. I'm just wondering, well, why these, and more importantly, why so many talents at the expense of stats, stats, and more stats.

*I'm one of them.

I totally agree with this, of course, but the funny thing is that loads of people in this forum want to see exactly these kind of things - 'arm' ratings at defense, 'poise' for pitching etc.

Basically, if the guy realises you should just be able to turn them off, that's no problem. They are presumably just extrapolations on standard ratings (get average/get homeruns etc. etc.), so it should be able to play with the stats only. Downloaded the demo.

to be honest i think stats like Bravery are relavent (whos has the bottle for a hard slide in at the plate etc?)

As i say this is a very WIP but looks like it has potential. Give the guy a message with bugs, sugguestions etc sure we can improve and direct his development time

I will tell you that having to d/l and install a Microsoft .net package that is 24 megs for a 1 meg demo doesn't predispose me toward the game.

UPDATE: After all that there are no players in the demo package, just teams and managers. I do like how games are called "fixtures"... cheerio, old chap, but I'll give it a pass... Thanks though, maybe i'll need that >net package for something else someday

^^^^ Did you download the full file? I had correct players from majors right down to the Rookie ball affiliate?

There's a lot of potential for depth here. Fully complex contracts, decent (if not perfect) stat retention, hopefully layered level of talent, a talent evaluation program. If the last bits are added properly, it will be okay. It will certainly be better than OOTP1.

The guy is obviously not a graphics designer. The game looks and handles terribly. For example, it lists infielders under catchers, for no reason. It's clearly a WIP. The ingame management is like Mogul but takes longer. Eek. It really isn't great, but it's a promising start.

Like I say Leiterfanatic, dont expect OOTP version 8, its a promising start, that needs constructive critism not just the usual "its a load of rubbish"

Yeah, don't get me wrong... I'm not saying it's garbage. I reserve that opinion for Baseball Mogul.

Not to worry.. however, I am having problems getting it to run. I have reinstalled it several times and each time the game runs but does not load the rosters. I get only coaches. I can access the database through the editor but not the game itself. Is there some option I have to select to load it first?

Honestly, the game looks good. I don't know how it plays just yet, but I'll give it a try.

That is not necessarily a bad thing (see the thread linked in my signature). However, of course, bravery, determination, decisions, clutch/pressure (what's the difference?), are ratings that are flawed and that can't really be measured or explained, and in that way it is a failure.
