Are you a ratings or a stat GM?

Do you run your teams by ratings or stats or a combo of both?

I have always been strictly a ratings guy. Sometimes this has led me to unpleasant results though....

Stats, by far. Try playing with ratings off, you'll learn a lot.

ratings off, talents on (1-5). Makes the game MUCH more enjoyable IMO!
Then you must make decisions based on stats and how good you think the player may be at that time....

When it comes to solo leagues, I'm a 2-8 man, myself. If the actual scouting reports listed with the players were semi-accurate, I'd go with ratings off but talent on.

I wish I had the guts to turn off the ratings. Right now, I evaluate players based on both, but I do weigh them a bit differently.

Currently in my solo league, Jeromy Burnitz is playing awful, but his ratings are fairly good. I'm much more likely to stick with him now, then if the situation were reversed. So, I guess, I look at stats predominately but ultimately there's a ratings consideration somewhere in there.

On a related note: for those of you who don't use ratings, how do you got about doing this? Do you use real or fictitiuos players? Do you sim a backlog of seasons before you take a team? How do you evaluate guys with very limited stats? I would really like to try this, but I'm just not ambitious enough.

Fictional players. I'm guessing you'll find that most people who play with ratings off also use fictional players.

Same way they do it in real life. I take a very vague scouting report to start from, and then I guess. My reserves get a lot of playing time in April, as I try to figure out how they're going to play over the course of the season. I don't really settle in to an established lineup until around the middle of May, and even after that I end up flip-flopping on the last couple spots in my lineup depending as players get hot or cold.

mostly ratings, and i still use it to sway whether a player gets rpomoted to a new level

but espeically in the minors, stats rule the day. a hot pitcher, or a minor leaguer that has kick ass stats keeps playing and will get promoted more than soemoen with higher ratings and bad stats.

of course its' voer time, but that's how i do it

Thanks a lot guys. I just started a new solo league and now you made me want to start a new one and turn rating off.

I tried to start an online leage a while back that used only stats. I didn't get enough interest to start the league. If anyone here is interested in this PM me.

If I have ratings on, I am a ratings GM. Usually, though, I turn them off, because being a stats GM is more realistic and more challenging.

I use them both. Mostly I go by ratings for call-ups and stuff like that. Once in the line-up I go by stats.

If ratings are on I go by them....but I hate going by ratings....kinda has been the norm for online leagues so kinda forced to....but for solo leagues...at most I might have the intangibles on. Much more fun and challenging.

Ratings because I want to play as the GM, not as a scout.

I play with ratings on, 1-20, but I only use them to compartmentalize guys; I really evaluate them with their stats.

You may already know this, but you don't have to start a new one if you want to make that change. At any time you can go to the League Setup screens and change it to ratings on/off or alternate the rating scale.

ratings on/talent off

I figure the ratings are what i would be able to see if i could watch a guy play.

but important decisions are made on stats
