At my wits end
As you can tell by my posting total, I don't post often. I've been a long time visitor of the boards here and have been playing since OOTP3. For the life of me I can't figure out this new engine at all. I'm running OOTP6.11 with Halofan's rosters.
I have just had it with horrible pitching. Starters and relievers with good control ratings are constantly hitting batters and throwing wild pitches. This week alone I have lost two games due to my stud closer hitting a batter to load the bases and then hit the very next batter to force in the winning run. I've never seen anything like this before. There always seems to be the 5 to 7 run inning lurking every couple of games. I play my games out in full and like to think I know what I'm doing pulling the strings. It's gotten to the point where I trade away very good relievers for other pitchers performing well only to have the newly acquired pitchers forget how to pitch on the flight to Atlanta. I don't make this post to flame the game or anything like that. I'm just completely stuck. I've always performed very well on all previous versions of OOTP but this one I'm just horrible. I realize that I can use the old engine but I assume the old engine will not be available in future versions. I remember reading a post like this one a few months back but it didn't get much of a response. Is anyone else having trouble with pitching? My starting rotation is Derke Lowe, Tim Hudson, Brad Radke, Brad Penny, and Tim Harvie. On July 1 Lowe and Hudson have ERA's over 5. Radke and Harvie are both over 4.50 and Penny is the lone bright spot with an ERA of 3.90 and a record of 13-2. Don't even get me started on the relievers. I'm not a "name" guy who figures 4 of these 5 starters are pretty good in real life therefore they must be good in the game. I do know that these guys are all rated very good and they don't perform that way. It's even worse with the relievers were I have a couple of relievers that are rated even better than the starters and they just get shelled. One of the biggest problems I have is lefty/lefty righty/righty matchups mean absolutely nothing apparently. I bring in a lefty who supposedly excells at shutting down lefties and he gets jacked up time again. You can't manage a game if you can't rely on even basic rules of thumb. After numerous efforts at franchises on 6.11 I'm about ready to just give up. I realize there will be a learning curve but it's has become rediculous. It's just not fun anymore. Thanks for letting me vent. |

One thing I have noticed in using the Lahman Database is that many pitchers (mostly starters) import having a high HBP and WP rating. Go to the player ratings screen and look at the bottom line of ratings. They may have imported with very high numbers. I usually make it a point to go onto every roster and change the numbers to be no higher than 5 HBP 5 WP and 1 balk. You can also adjust the HBP in league totals if you still think it is too high.
I tried to do some research on HBP, but it was very difficult because OOTP doesn't give total HBP under the League Pitching stats. You have to go and pull up each person and manually add them up. My online research showed around an average of 40 HBP per team the last few years. It might be more or less for other eras. Hopefully that helps a bit. |

Dblbogey31, have you tried using the OOTP5 engine switch in OOTP6?

No, I know it's an option but I assume that the DIPS engine will be the one used in future versions so I had better be able to understand it. Thanks for the tip though.

Do you play the game in manager mode? What difficulty level?
Playing the game on a high difficulty can make your players perform worse than they should. I don't know if it manifests itself as more WP or HBP though. |

Vezna: I looked into that thank you. I checked Tim Hudson and Brad Radke. Both have ratings of 4/4/1. Close to your 5/5/1. In around the same number or batters faced Hudson has 7 wild pithces and Radke has 10. The thing about the wild pitches and hit batsmen with the relievers is they seem to come in pairs. If one happens it's a safe bet another one is going to occur in the same inning. It's crazy

I was under the impression that control had nothing to do with WP and HBP. That's why there's an individual rating for each of those.
I also have noticed a very high number of "big innings." I haven't done a strict study within the game, nor a comparison to real life, but it appears that I get around 3-5 innings a week (one team's games) with 4+ runs. The total run scoring doesn't seem odd, but the big innings (especially against relievers) seems out of whack. |

I'm hear you! To me it always seems like HBP, wild pitches, errors, walks, and hits from the .200 guy all come at the same time.
I don't have conclusive proof other than my own observation from playing out every game. It just seems that way. However, I can tell you I see this regardless of whether my team is playing well or not. IE , it still happens even when my team is 122-40 after the season so I end up saying to myself, "Well I guess I can't complain too much can I".
