Attn: Logo Designers-Charlotte Cherokees-Favorites Logo #8

PLEASE NOTE YOU HAVE UNTIL TUESDAY, MARCH 8 TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRIES.

CHARLOTTE CHEROKEES LOGO #8 to be designed for the Logo Favorites Compilation.

All I could find out about Charlotte is it is very prosperous city...full of vitality and vigor...high tech and eductional center...named for Queen Charlotte...is the "Queen City"...NASCAR Speedway...large Cherokee Indian nation was here and also in other Southern states...and North Carolina "tar heels"....that name came out of the Civil War and refers to a North Carolinian...tar on their feet kept them from retreating...they would stick and fight.

If you would like to design a logo, you have until Midnight Tuesday, March 8 at 11:59 pm CST (USA) to e-mail it to jnshmoo. You may submit more than one logo...but please make them distinctly different from each other...and not just slight variations of the same logo.

HIS E-MAIL ADDRESS: ootplogo at jnshmoo.us (You will have to take out the "spaces" and add the real "at" symbol...this is to cut down on spam to jnshmoo)

IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A RECEIPT CONFIRMATION OF YOUR ENTRY WITHIN 24 HOURS, CONTACT JNSHMOO BY PM (PRIVATE MESSAGE). YOU SHOULD ALSO RESEND YOUR ENTRY TO HIM.

IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU GET YOUR ENTRY IN PRIOR TO THE LAST 24 HOURS OF THE ENTRY DEADLINE.

Size: 150 x 150 pixels

JPG FORMAT

RULES: DO NOT USE ANY EXISTING PRO SPORTS LEAGUES LOGOS.

A designer cannot use an already existing professional logo in the logo design and creation...it must be a new creation.

The time zone is Central Standard Time in the USA...my time zone.
DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR LOGO: 11:59 PM CST TUESDAY, MARCH 8
For the time zone challenged, Midnight Central Time on Tuesday is:
(COMPLIMENTS OF THE TIMELESS WONDER, LE GRANDE ORANGE)

9:59 p.m. Pacific on Tuesday
10:59 p.m. Mountain on Tuesday
11:59 p.m. Central on Tuesday
12:59 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday
1:59 a.m. Atlantic on Wednesday
5:59 a.m. GMT on Wednesday

Thanks for noting that. It is one of those things I had always wondered about but never got around to trying to figure out. Strange how even with the internet now there are still lots of things I that I could find the answer to but do not bother to do so. Anyhoo, I'm glad I know now what "tar heels" means.

****This is not a poll for the Charlotte Cherokees-logo #8...that poll will be done next week****
*****it is just the names the Nickname Selection Committee used to select Charlotte's nickname and includes the final Committee vote...it is too just to let you know the process used to pick the nicknames.

Here is the list we started with:

Blazers
Bulldogs
Carolinians
Celestials
Cherokees (large Indian tribe in the area and the South)
Chieftains
Colonials
Comets
Corsairs
Crickets
Cybercats (computer/hi tech/research center)
Gems
Generals
Gents
Grays (Civil War)
Knights
Kodiaks
Lasers (hi tech)
Monarchs (Queen Charlotte/royalty)
Orions
Racers (NASCAR/Charlotte Speedway)
Ramblers
Rebs (Civil War...shortened it just to be different and unique)
Rifles

REPEATING: THIS IS NOT A POLL TO SELECT THE LOGO...THAT WILL BE DONE AFTER THE LOGOS ARE POSTED...THIS WAS USED BY THE NICKNAME SELECTION COMMITTEE TO SELECT THE NICKNAME...IT IS NOT FOR FORUM MEMBERS TO VOTE ON.

Here is the Selection Committe's final vote:

CHARLOTTE CHEROKEES IS THIS WEEK'S CHOICE.

Norf Cackalack in the house!

Obviously, the correct choice would have been the Charlotte Intimidators in honor of #3, but I think a minor league team in Kannapolis has that name already.

I think Cherokees is a great choice though.

Intimidators would have been a fine name...we could have used it, but no one thought of it...I think we need some racing fans on the committee...we don't know nothin' but baseball, football and basketball.

Actually that all I know...knuckler and DreamTeams are much smarter.

The team in Kannapolis uses Intimidators so it wouldn't have been eligible.

And Eugene, no one knows more about nicknames in this forum than you.

I just had a class talk about this so I thought I'd bring it up just for discussions sake.

What are your guys' take on the idea that teams should get rid of Native American team names, like the Indians and the Redskins? I personally think they can be done in a way that pays tribute to the group, but that it just as easily can be something that contributes to stereotypes. I really don't know where that line is though, so I've never really been big on either side.

I think there are teams that cross the line with naming (Washington Redskins) or imagery (Cleveland Indians). There are other teams (Kansas City Chiefs) that take care to use names and images that won't offend Native Americans. But it's a fine line, and since I'm not Native American I'm probably not really qualified to answer this definitively. I am, however, part Irish, and I'm not offended by Notre Dame (I may not be a fan, but I'm not offended by their name or imagery). Ultimately, I think if you have an intent to honor or pay tribute to the group you name your team after, then you may be OK. Not an easy issue to address though.

I personally questioned whether or not to submit Cherokees as a nickname, fearing it would not be politically correct and might offend some people.

But I have always revered and respected the great Indian Nations and have looked on them as wise, brave, loyal, strong, spiritial and honest people that care about the land...The image that always comes to my mind when I think of Native American, is of of the movie actor, Jeff Chandler, who played the great Indian chief, Cochise, in the Jimmy Stewart movie, "Broken Arrow". He was very wise, brave, honest and loyal.

So when I submitted it and voted for it, I did it with the greatest respect.

I think as long as the nickname honors our great Native Americans and depicts them in a positive way, it is ok...I would hate for it to become mandatory to ban all references to them in sports...I miss the great nicknames of the past...Miami Redskins, St. John's Redmen...Marquette Warriors...and I think Ripon Redmen, too...I think they were all changed to be politically correct and for no other reason...I'm glad the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Braves did not give in to political pressure.

I felt it would be wrong to eliminate a Native American name simply to be politically correct, which I think has gone too far in our present day society.

That is my White Man's view...which is biased and could be totally wrong...it would be interesting to hear what a Native American would say about the question. I remember reading how a Native American felt about it and I could in many ways agree with their perspective and feelings. I remember him saying that the Indian head dress is religious in meaning and is to be treated with respect and not used in a light manner...like having a white man dress up as an Indian and bring ridicule to them by acting like a crazed savage...similar to white people in blackface is offensive to Black people.

There is another thread (perhaps on these forums, I cannot remember for sure) where it was said that very few Native Americans are offended by the use of their names/images within pro sports and colleges. As I type this - now I'm wondering if it was a piece on Sportscenter rather than a thread on a message board - but anyway, back to my point...

What they basically said was that when polled, a higher percentage of non-Native Americans said it was offensive than Native Americans. And, in actuality, only a very small percentage of Native Americans were offended. A small, but vocal group I guess.

Anyhow - since we're going with a name like "Cherokees" that has regional ties, I think it is quite tasteful, and respectful.

I made a couple of logos for this contest and will be entering them for the first time. Seeing I'm a rookie I don't plan on winning, but seeing how many votes I get will tell me how much changes I need to make for next time

PS: Your original post for the contest has March 8th as the deadline at the top and bottom, but has March 1st in the middle
