Crashes when minimizing

I told a buddy about OOTP 6, telling him how sweet the game is, and he emailed me telling me that any time he locks his machine (ctrl , alt + del) or minimizes the game. It freezes his machine and has to reboot. This is the latest demo that he downloaded. Here is his email : I’ve tried everything I can think of, but the game locks every time I minimize it or lock my desktop. I disabled my secondary monitor, reinstalled DX9, disabled Direct3D and sound within the game options… no luck. I installed it on my laptop and my 2003 Server test box and it does the same thing on both PCs. If you lock the desktop, the game is froze right after unlock.

I would really like to prove to him how sweet this game is, so any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know you need to close the game before doing either of these, I have never tried "locking" my PC so can't really be of help. Maybe someone who has can lend some insight. The minimizing issue is system specific because I can minimize the game all day and over night and never have one issue with the game not coming right back up and working as it should. More than likely it is a memory/RAM issue.

Steve, locking your PC will definitely kill OOTP - exactly the same behavior as the oft-noted "WTF! MY SCREENSAVER KILLED MY GAME!" error. Screensavers and locking both do the same things to your PC - in fact, if your screensaver is password protected, it actually locks your system, just the same as if you had hit CTRL-ALT-DEL. This doesn't apply in Win95/98/ME, where the "locking" mechanism doesn't exist - but the screensaver issue is certainly there.

Minimizing it shouldn't, though I've never tried while simming.

edit: timoco, your buddy doesn't need to reboot. If OOTP stops responding, he can use the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) to kill the "ootp.exe" process. I've had to do it a bunch of times...but that may corrupt the league he's currently using.

Hopefully, this will no longer be a problem with the next version.

I have had the same problem, actually. I just don't minimize it anymore.

And eriq is right. Just CTL-ALT-DEL and then end the process that way. I've done that numerous times. Sure I've had to restart the league I was in, but it's a small price to pay I think.

Ok, that sounds like locking it does cause problems I personally have never had a reason to lock my PC which I why I have never experienced this.

Well how else are we going to play at work <grin> locking the machine is the fastest to hide from the boss. He is able to stop the process through task manager, but that kill the current game. Nothing worse than playing for a bit and you are about to finish the game and you have the lead, and low and behold here he comes walking in the door.....have to hide the game.

Thanks for all the help, hope a patch will fix this issue.

I have been able to minimize the game with no problem. Locking the machine, etc. will always cause a lockup though.

Ok thanks everyone for the fast response, my buddy has also come to that conclusion about minimizing only. Here is his last email to me. :I did some more testing, and the lockup is only consistent when I lock the desktop. I haven’t been able to reproduce it by just minimizing… so that part was probably inaccurate

Hopefully it is something small to fix and will be out in a new patch. If not I hope it doesnt reproduce itself in OOTP 7

Great boards,

Technically the game does not lock up when you enter screen saver mode. It's just the graphics doesn't refresh itself. If you're not in a game, you can type the Escape key twice and OOTP will shutdown cleanly.
