Nen makes it offical: Calls it Quits

Former Giants and Marlins closer Robb Nen has decided to retire after having another setback in his recovery from three shoulder surgeries. "He tried and got close again, and fell back down," Giants trainer Stan Conte told the Associated Press. "It's been so frustrating. I'm surprised he lasted this long." Nen hasn't pitched since the end of the 2002 season due to a torn rotator cuff. He pitched 10 major league seasons and piled up 314 saves, a total which ranks 13th all-time in history.

Nen was an elite fantasy closer for nearly his whole career, and he saved 35 or more games in seven straight seasons from 1996-2002. Despite reports to the contrary, we didn't have too much hope of Nen returning and making a fantasy impact. Good luck with retirement, Robb.

What an unfortunate situation. Nen was a great and dominate closer, and will be missed!

Another, in a along line of quality players, that the Rangers let slip through their fingers. Sad thing is that Nen was at the top of his game when he wrecked his rotator cuff.

Yea I remember when it originally happened because my friend had him on his fantasy team. I remember the report saying he would be out the first couple weeks in April. Then April passed. Soon the summer passed along with the season. A second season passed and Nen never returned. Tis a shame.

I drafted him in my yahoo baseball league that year with my 4th pick. He never played and yet I still led the league in saves. However, it came to an expense of other areas to acquire better CL's.

What a shame to lose him. He was one of my favorite CL's in baseball.

I loved Nen....not the dominator, but he ALWAYS seemed to get out of it. He'd either create a situation where he'd blow the save or enter with runners in position, but no matter what it seemed the guy cut the other team off JUST before they could come back. I was hoping he'd resign a minor league deal with the Giants this year and give it a run. Best of luck to him.
