The Three Million Dollar Man

On this date in baseball history:

Feb. 16, 1989
Orel Hershiser becomes Major League Baseball's first three million dollar man when he signs a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers that will pay him $3,166,667 in 1991.

Oh, how times have changed...

Nah, haven't heard them. I'm too busy watching America's Funniest Home Videos with Bob Saget.

With all the hard feelings floating around this place lately I feel pressed to include some disclaimers before posting:

1. Green and Gold Heart, I have no problem with you or your post.
2. I am definitely not an expert.
3. I don't have a perfect memory.

However I thought I remembered that Kirby Puckett was baseball's first three million dollar man. So, I did some checking and I guess...they both were the first.

It's true that "bulldog" was the first to sign his contract since Puckett didn't sign his until after the '89 season. However, this link:

http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/ho...kett_kirby.htm

...says that Puckett was first.

The interesting thing and the reason I say they both were first is that neither of them actually MADE 3 million plus until the '91 season when both of their base salaries were $3,166,667.

Anyway, I was just bored and decided to check out my memory...carry on.

It's all good, Charlie Hustle. I just got it from my baseball history desk calendar, so I didn't do any massive research.

1989 - Freshman/sophomore year of high school. Ugh.

I do remember Mike Gallego being called "the million dollar man" at one point because he signed a million dollar deal, despite the fact that he pretty much sucked.

Yikes, I don't remember that. I'm assuming it was a deal with the Yankees.

You would be correct. Following his stellar 1991 season:

Code:
Year Ag Tm Lg G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG TB SH SF IBB HBP GDP
1991 30 OAK AL 159 482 67 119 15 4 12 49 6 9 67 84 .247 .343 .369 178 10 3 3 5 8
Gallego signed a contract with the Yanks for $1,950,000. His 1992 line?

Code:
Year Ag Tm Lg G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG TB SH SF IBB HBP GDP
1992 31 NYY AL 53 173 24 44 7 1 3 14 0 1 20 22 .254 .343 .358 62 3 1 0 4 5
Worth...every...penny!

He actually got 5.1M for three years from the Yanks after those four or five "stellar" seasons in Oakland...BRILLIANT!

He was so awesome in Oakland that he platooned at 2B with Glen Hubbard! No wonder George ponied up the big bucks for him!

1989, good year. I was a young airman stationed at Luke AFB, outside Phoenix. Good times tubing on the river, picking up easy women at Mr Lucky's or the Devil House, playing Techno Bowl allnight long while drinking cases of Budweiser. Oh to be young and ignorant again.

[February 16th, 1989 guy]
$3,000,000 a year is pretty much the bar. Nobody is going to be willing to pay more than that for one person. In fact, it's more likely that we will have an earthquake during the World Series than somebody making over $3,000,000 a year.

1990 was much better.

:b 1989 first year I got into baseball, mainly through collecting cards. And the fact the Cubs made the playoffs. I still hate the Giants.

Im curious who was the first Million dollar player? I think Sandberg was the first 5 Million dollar player in 93, I remember thinking that the Cubs overpaid for him.
