THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 6, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1906: Even though last year's World Series didn't go the distance, every game was exciting and memorable, guarnteeing that the yearly contest is here to stay. With the Reds' win, each league now has one crown, and the competition is fierce, especially between the fans of crosstown fans. Both the Reds and Highlanders plan on defending their crowns, but there is plenty of competition and it literally could go to any team.

Prospect Watch: JOHN "HOMERUN" HEINZ

This young man has thrown any claims on his family's tomato condiment empite and devoted himself to the great American game of baseball. ya gotta admire his dedication. One thing that scouts have noticed about this young man is his freakishly large forearms, supposedly gained from lifting thousands of crates of tomatoes in his youth. This has helped him launch the ball a bit more than other players (hence the self-imposed nickname), but he does have an awkward throwing motion as a result. As a result, the outfield is not for him. Management can't keep a batting talent like his out of the lineup, so they decided to play him where he could do the least damage....at first base.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 6, ISSUE 2

SEPTEMBER 25, 1906: For the first two months, the Philadelphia Athletics were in complete control with an 8 game lead over the rest of the American league, but as the summer rolled along, the defending champions Highlanders chipped away at the the lead, eventually passing them in late August. For the second year in a row, Philadelphia was out in the cold while the Highlanders remained kings of the hill....at least in the AL.

If there were any doubters whatsoever with regards to last year's Reds' squad, they completely wiped them away in 1906. Four teams fought it out for second place as Cincy roared to another pennant, clinching it by the 3rd week in August. Can they down the Highlanders once again? Or will the boys from the Bronx be ready?

ROY HOBBS: Hobbs should be called "The Ordinary". Scouts still say he has immense potential, but he always seems distracted. He came up again in September but was hitless in 3 at-bats.

SAM KINGMA: After last year's magical season, the sky was the limit for Kingma. Naturally Pirate fans are a bit disappointed by the mediocre stats, but he's young and probably only had to work out a few kinks. He did win his second Gold glove, however.

1906 WORLD SERIES

9/26/1906 - GAME 1 HIGHLANDERS 2 - REDS 5

Mordecai Brown pitches a solid game and Sam Crawford knocks in 2 runs with a double in front of the home crowd, but it was the Highlanders' 3 errors that gave the game to the Reds. Things are off to a good start.

9/27/1906 - GAME 2 HIGHLANDERS 2 - REDS 4

Another 2 run double for Sam Crawford and another win for the Reds help send the Highlanders back to the Big Apple in a big 2-0 hole.

9/29/1906 - GAME 3 REDS 3 - HIGHLANDERS 6

Four runs in the bottom of the 1st was all that was needed for the Highlanders to regain some confidence. Jerry Nops allowed only 3 hits in the game. The Reds made the best of it with three runs, but it wasn't enough.

9/30/1906 - GAME 4 REDS 3 - HIGHLANDERS 4

Reds management will regret pulling Mordecai Brown in the bottom of the 9th. Relief pitcher "Buckshot" Skopec took one in the kiester, allowing 3 hits, capped off by an RBI by Bill Kiester.

10/2/1906 - GAME 5 REDS 5 - HIGHLANDERS 7

New York wins their 3rd straight as Mike Donlin finally wakes up, knocking in 3 runs with a base-clearing double, putting the Highlanders ahead 3 games to as the Reds head back to Cincy reeling in shock.

10/3/1906 - GAME 6 HIGHLANDERS 4 - REDS 3, 10 innings

Backup catcher Lou Criger has a knack for being on championship teams despite limited at-bats. In 1903 he won with the Pilgrims. He was known as a pinch-hitter extraordinaire this season, knocking in 5 runs on 3 hits in his only 3 at-bats during the regular season, and he did it again, slapping a pinch hit RBI single in the top of the 10th to give the Highlanders the crown, shocking the Reds, who had been up 2 games to 0.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 7, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1907: The Highlanders are kings of the baseball hill and they are favored to repeat again. In fact, there is a good chance that we may see a rubber match between New York and Cincy. None of the other teams have made any moves that should get them to the next level. Of course, it is a 154 game season and that's why we play the game. In other news, bot Boston clubs have decided to rename themselves. The Beaneaters have transformed into the Doves, and the AL team is now known as the Red Sox, referring to the color of their footwear. Will the name changes bring them new success?

Prospect Watch: MAK DOLNICK

Speed like this young man has only comes along once in a generation. He runs so fast a vacuum is left in his wake. Scouts say that he shows that he is aware of his role on a team. Slap the ball and get on base. It's up to others to knock him in. At 19 years old, he should be ready to be slotted in as a leadoff hitter in a year or two if he develops on schedule. THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 7, ISSUE 2

SEPTEMBER 25, 1907: It looks like there were other AL teams ready to step it up after all. Napoleon Lajoie's Athletics and the Washington Senators, behind the 1-2 combo of Hooks Wiltse and rookie phenom Heinie Berger both held off the Highlanders all season. In the end, New York was on the outside as a spectator for the one game playoff between the A's and Sens. Lajoie and Paul Sentell turned it on for Philly as each knocked in 3 in their pennant-clinching win over Washington.

PROSPECT WATCH

ROY HOBBS: Hobbs shuffled back and forth between AAA and the majors until he was traded to Cleveland at the deadline. The Bronchos immediately brought up and he appeared to adjust well to the new environment. Perhaps the big city was too much for him.

With the Reds' win, each league now has one crown, and the competition is fierce, especially between the fans of crosstown fans. Both the Reds and Highlanders plan on defending their crowns, but there is plenty of competition and it literally could go to any team. Prospect Watch: JOHN "HOMERUN" HEINZ This young man has thrown any claims on his family's tomato condiment empite and devoted himself to the great American game of baseball. ya gotta admire his dedication. One thing that scouts have noticed about this young man is his freakishly large forearms, supposedly gained from lifting thousands of crates of tomatoes in his youth. This has helped him launch the ball a bit more than other players (hence the self-imposed nickname), but he does have an awkward throwing motion as a result. As a result, the outfield is not for him. Management can't keep a batting talent like his out of the lineup, so they decided to play him where he could do the least damage....at first base. Things are off to a good start. 9/27/1906 - GAME 2 HIGHLANDERS 2 - REDS 4 Another 2 run double for Sam Crawford and another win for the Reds help send the Highlanders back to the Big Apple in a big 2-0 hole. 9/29/1906 - GAME 3 REDS 3 - HIGHLANDERS 6 Four runs in the bottom of the 1st was all that was needed for the Highlanders to regain some confidence. Jerry Nops allowed only 3 hits in the game. The Reds made the best of it with three runs, but it wasn't enough. 9/30/1906 - GAME 4 REDS 3 - HIGHLANDERS 4 Reds management will regret pulling Mordecai Brown in the bottom of the 9th. In 1903 he won with the Pilgrims. Prospect Watch: MAK DOLNICK Speed like this young man has only comes along once in a generation. He runs so fast a vacuum is left in his wake. Scouts say that he shows that he is aware of his role on a team. Slap the ball and get on base. It's up to others to knock him in. At 19 years old, he should be ready to be slotted in as a leadoff hitter in a year or two if he develops on schedule.
