Pennsylvania vs Maryland

GAME 1 - @ Maryland

It was billed as one of the greatest pitching matchups of the post-season, but it ended early for Lowell Stang. Stang left after 7 pitches with a minor injury. The bullpen kept it close, as Michael Welch, Frank Scull, Charlie Clowers and Tracey Northrup allowed just 6 hits in the remaining 7.2 innings, but they were no match for the always dominant Jim Yim. Yim 2-hit the Freedom, who scored their lone run on an M-Rod homer (Tally hit a double for Penn's other hit). Final Score - Maryland 2, Pennsylvania 1.

Game 2 - @ Maryland

Skip Burns faced Joseph Bingman in game 2, and although Burns pitched better (he won POG honors), he left with no-decision and the score knotted at 2. Bick Horizon homered for the Freedom, and Tally drove in a run on his 2nd double of the postseason. At the end of 9 the score was still 2-2. Pennsylvania had 4 hits, Maryland had 2. But in the 10th, a walk and a hit off of Hector Moreno led to the winning run, much to the delight of the local crowd. Final Score - Maryland 3, Pennsylvania 2.

Game 3 - @ Pennsylvania

The Freedom hit a little better at home, but Maryland hit even better. Chris Curcio allowed 4 ER in 4 innings while Maryland's Damien Holcombe allowed just 2 ER on 4 hits in 7.1 innings. Carlos Martinez had a pair of doubles and Ludwig Claus hit his first career post-season home run in the losing effort. Final Score - Maryland 5, Pennsylvania 3, but Jax caught a foul ball.

Maryland Wins

Although it stinks to get swept, we were very happy overall with how the season went. To go from a year-in, year-out cellar dweller to a playoff team was just step one. We need to win a championship (and dethrone the Barons!!!!), and we have a young nucleus that should take us directly in that direction.

Oh, and because we like to end things on a positive note, here's a little something I noticed...

Friday 10/15/2010 :
Hector Moreno seems to have improved his pure stuff!

Moreno is now rated 2/10/8 with 8/10/8 talent. Maybe a front runner for that 5th starter role?

Maryland really shut down our batters. M-Rod was our only regular to hit over .200, and we had 3 guys bat below .100! I'm not entirely surprised - we hit poorly all year long - but I thought we'd do better than we did.

Only a handful of Freedom players hit over .250, and overall it was a poor year for us offensively. But Bick Horizon tied for the league lead with 112 RBI and finished 3rd in home runs. His .306 average ranked 6th, indicating that there probably wasn't a whole lot of offense league-wide.

Pitching was great this year; we had a great bullpen and a good rotation, even if 2 guys had losing records. Will Moreno be back in the Rotation next year? Or maybe it will be Chuck Clowers? Tracey Northrup? We'll see...

Bleh......that sucks. Hopefully next year your offensive players can pick up their game to what it should be.

Yeah, we hit .234 and the league's batting average was only .239, but I still think our guys should have hit better. I'm not even in the same division as James Yim, who is insanely good.

1) James Yim is hands down the best pitcher I've ever seen this game produce (though his career is still young).

2) This series reminds me a lot of the '98 Cubs-Braves division series IRL: very close games, both teams playing well to their mutual pitching strengths, but one team just stronger enough than the other to pull off the sweep.

And, like '98, an awesome season for the underdogs nevertheless. Nice job, Chappy.

Bad luck Chappy but it's a real step forward and I'm already looking forward to next season! (When does that start btw?) Once the dissapointment has lessened for you perhaps you could tell us what your immediate plans will be for the Freedom? Where you will look for improvement and where in the organization you hope to find it or if you think you will need to look outside the team and make a trade. Perhaps it's time for Viktor Tay to step up

"That Yellow Bastard" sums it up quiet nicely. It's a shame, but your players are young and with finances turned of you can keep them for a long time and they WILL develope even further. You'll make it. Go Freedom!!!

I've not really spent a lot of time covering players from other teams, but James Yim is phenomenal. Heck, I don't think even he could match his 30-win, 375-strikeout 2007 campaign. The career WHIP is just insane. And, as you mentioned, he'll be just 29 years old on opening day next season.

Dola,

A big 'thank you' to all you followers of the Freedom. I was wondering how many of you would stick around after the break, and it looks like there are more of you than ever.

Thanks for the support!

New York did okay with the first pick in the 2001 draft, with 3-time all-star CF Alex Cabezas, but poor Minnesota didn't fair to well with the #2 overall pick, pitcher Robert Jung

Why am I telling you this? Because immediately after Jung was selected, Maryland nabbed James Yim with the #3 pick.

Kind of like the Ryan Leaf of baseball. I bet you're looking forward to having a late draft pick this year.

Yeah, it's not like he can trade his future like he did with all his other first round draft picks.

Hey Chappy... could you give us an update on the 1st rounders you've traded? There have been quite a few.

Yeah, that will be wierd. I'm not used to having to wait to pick.

As for a review of the first rounders I've traded, that sounds like a good idea.

Penn #1 Picks - since I've been at the helm

2003 - Donn "Professor" Fagan - Traded to Connecticut on 7/24/2004 (Going to Pen: SS R. Kidder. Going to Con: P D. Fagan) - Kidder gave us a slight offensive boost and has since retired, and Fagan has pitched just 25.2 big league innings, going 1-2 with a 2.81 ERA. I didn't take over the team until after the draft, but I was the one who traded him.
2004 - Carmelo "Fonzie" Fons - Traded from Pennsylvania to Virginia on 3/1/2007 (Going to Pen: P L. Stang and the #1 overall pick in the 2007 draft (Delmar Barrie). Going to Vir: 3B C. Fons, P B. Titsworth, RF J. Manning) - Fonzie was one of my favorites, but at this point in time, I needed young pitchers. I gave up too much for Stang, but his 20-win season this year has put me a little more at ease (I'd also feel a little better about this deal had Lenz not bit the dust - see below). I remember trying hard to talk VA into taking Claus instead of Fonzie, but I ended up caving in. Fonzie hit .373 in '08 and now has a .307 career average.
2005 - Ludwig "Lobster" Claus - Still with the team. An All-Star in '07, but a bit of a disappointment thus far.
2005 - Zack Loranger - Traded from Pennsylvania to Maryland on 5/4/2005 (Going to Mry: SS Z. Loranger. Going to Pen: 1B P. Galyon) - Loranger finally made his debut this year for the Admirals, and hit .333 in 5 games. At 25, he looks like he has a decent future ahead of him. Of course, if we hadn't traded him, we never would have had Pat Galyon.
2006 - Steven "Beanpole" Huggan - Traded from Pennsylvania to Mississippi on 6/3/2006 (Going to Mis: CF S. Huggan. Going to Pen: P A. Nietz, P P. Iuvani, P C. Soles, P J. Melboure) - Now with Texas, Huggan has had a similar career to one Lobster Claus. Decent power, low average. Still a chance to be great, but so far a disappointment. As for the players we got, well, the jury is still out. Nietz looks like he'll be pretty good.
2007 - Delmar Barrie - Traded from Pennsylvania to Illinois on 7/22/2007 (Going to Ill: CF D. Barrie, RF S. Sedgwick. Going to Pen: P A. Lenz) - We all know how this one went - Lenz could have been a star until that CEI.
2008 - Keith Tracey - Still with the team.
2009 - Rudy "Spiderman" Lareau - Traded from Pennsylvania to Washington on 3/3/2009 (Going to Pen: P Charlie Clowers, C Carlos Martinez, Washington's 4th round pick. Going to Was: C Billy Carreras, SS Rudy Lareau, Pennsylvania's 1st round pick) - If Clowers never pans out, this will be another one I'll regret. Lareau hit .262 as a rookie for Washington. Actually, seeing as the pick I gave them turned out to be #5 overall, I still will regret this deal no matter what.
2010 - Traded pick in above trade.

So, Ludwig Claus and Keith Tracey are the only 1st rounders I've both drafted and kept. And both had disappointing years. Oh well.

The 2010 Founders Cup matchup is set.

The Maryland Admirals slipped past the New York Barons, winning 3 times by just 1 run. New York suffered injuries in each of the first 3 games (Aaron Bacon in game 1, Gandalf Greyheme in game 2 and Dennis Morelock in game 3), and they were already playing without Aragorn King, so they weren't the powerful team that won 117 games.

Colorado had little trouble getting past the Jethawks. Illinois got little production from James Easson and Alesso Rusticucci. The Rams' Tyson Bacon was electric though, and is hitting .475 this post-season.

So the Colorado Rams (97-65) will host the Maryland Admirals (96-66) in the opening two games. It should be a good series!

Just a brief update:

The Maryland Admirals defeated the Colorado Rams for the National Cup.

Tonight is the NPBL draft.

I'm stoked.

Finally, we have an opening if anyone is interested in testing their skills in an online league. PM me if interested.

Just a plug, I just joined NPBL about a month ago and it is a class act folks. I suggest you jump at the chance to get into the league.

I agree with jeheinz72. Except I've only been in for like two weeks.
