Problem getting League files
Not sure if you can help me in this matter. Our commish recommended posting here to see if there are any ideas.
I have 5 teams right now in five different leagues. The problem I am having involves only one league and havent experienced it in any others. Also none of the other league members are experiencing this problem. For some reason when I click the league file link I always get a page not available. The league addy with this problem is occuring at pro-circuit.net/... I am the Boston club. I am currently using XP home edition service pack 1 and have 55% disc space available. I use MSN dial up and access with IE. I have tried using Mozilla also and cant even access the leagues main page. I have a dell computer with pentium 4 253 ghz, 256 ram, 40 gig hard drive The problem of not being able to access the lg file page worked fine until approxamately 3 weeks ago. I have made no changes in my settings and the only addition was the game Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. I did have problems running the game even though it met all the maunufacturers requirements. A problem that is common and seems I have wasted the money buying the game and at the web site for the game I wasnt the only one experiencing this problem. I have uninstalled the game using the uninstall option. I have cleaned my cache, cookies, etc and defragged my comp. I also have run my adware and spy block programs hoping this would solve the problem. Like I said after doing such I still am not able to access the lg files to DL them. This problem is limited to this one site as I have no problems with any other site I use on a regular basis. As the commish stated thru emails there seem to be several comp gurus here and maybe I could get a answer or cure to this problem here. I am a comp novice so please respond in simple terms. Thanks for your time and effort in this matter. Kevin Jones adoorco@hotmail.com Last edited by BaseballNut; 02-01-2005 at 11:55 PM. |

Do you have any anti-virus software? Or Zone Alarm? Or some other kind of internet security software? There may have been some security update at the beginning of the year which made zip-files suddenly inaccessible. Try disabling this software before clicking the league file link.
If that doesn't work, a short-term fix is to borrow another computer, download the file, put on a CD-RW and move it to your computer. Although I dislike this next option, because I think it messes up a lot of other things, you can click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Then choose a date when things were working properly and restore your pc to that date's condition. This will mess up settings, installations etc, that have been done since then so you may find OTHER things in a mess. But fear not. You can undo this back if it doesn't work for you. Let me know if this helps. If not, I may have some other things you could try.

Also, Server overload also causes pages to be inaccessible. Bandwidth is being prioritized to serve the highest paying customers first meaning that there are some times when the traffic is too heavy when you are trying to access the file. try at a different time as well.

I tried everything you guys have mentioned above with exception to restoring my comp to a prior date. I too hate having to do that was hoping to wait until this weekend hoping to maybe find a easier cure here.
Not sure this will help but when I right click the message I get is; "the server returned a invalid or unrecognized response" I guess since I am the only one in the league experiencing this problem there must be a file buried deep that is conflicting. I am starting to believe the problem is related to the waste of money that I spent on the Medal of Honor Pacific Assault game. The game is a total bust and if any want to take the time go to their forum and see the complaints they are getting. Their reccommended requirements dont even matter as like myself it seems a majority of the people who have purchased the game have had nothing but problems and their tech support could care less. The whole thing that puzzles me most is the pro-circuit.net is the only site I am having problems . My other 4 leagues I get the zip files with no problems what so ever. Try this:
Contact your commissioner and ask him how his website is encoded. Then go to his website, right click in a clear area of the page and choose "encode". Then choose the encoding that that the website was made as. When a website is created, sometimes the creator chooses a type of encoding that will display his/her site as close as possible to the way he wants it to look. Occassionally, this knocks things out of whack for some web browsers. The "the server returned a invalid or unrecognized response" means that your web browser and his website are not communicating 100%. Usually this is due to encoding.

Thanks I have contacted the commish to get the encoding. I did go to all my sites and did notice something different between his and the rest of the leagues. When right clicking and doing as you stated all but his site have a dot next to Western European (ISO) his has a dot next to Western European (windows). Like I said earlier I am a novice to computers and you have definitely hit on a area I am totally lost to when talking about encoding.
I greatly appreciate your time and kind responses regarding this matter. Thanks |

Problem Update.
Well I restored my comp back to the first of the year and then restored it again back to a year ago Jan 1st. Both times I get the same thing (Page not available). What totally puzzles me is it is only that one thing I can not do. I can surf the web with no problems as well as get my other lg's zip files with no problems. Its just that one page that wont work for me. I am at a total loss as to what is wrong and really dont want to reformat my whole system just for this problem. |

Is that page somehow blocked by a spam or popup blocker?

If it is its on their end as I have disabled everything. Blockers, virus programs etc. The commish is going to try and move the page to a different site and see if it works. Its so odd as I have access to all the other links just the lg file page does it.
Greatly appreciate all your help and suggestions guys. Thanks |

you could ask your commish to encode his website differently. It still sounds like the problem lies there.

Just my $.02 but have you tried having him zip the file and send it to you e-mail? I understand the zip may be too big for your e-mail server but it definitely gets you past the website/encoding issue (if its on his end - the file will unzip and you'll continue just like there is no problem...)
