THE CHRONICLE - 1903 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPION: BOSTON PILGRIMS (90-50) Team Batting Average: .279 Team ERA: 3.03 Top Batters: Buck Freeman - .337, 42 2b, 70 RBI, 27 SB Duff Cooley - .314, 88 RBI, 54 SB Chick Stahl - .313, 83 RBI, 22 SB Top Pitchers: Cy Young - 25-10, 2.90 ERA, 164 K Oscar Jones - 23-14, 3.24 ERA, 103 K Ham Iburg - 21-17, 3.47 ERA, 152 K NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (81-59) Team Batting Average: .285 Team ERA: 3.39 Top Batters: Roy Thomas - .318, 70 RBI, 76 SB Bill Friel - .314, 65 RBI, 20 SB Harry Wolverton - .287, 76 RBI, 17 SB Top Pitchers: Doc White - 21-12, 2.84 ERA, 158 K Bill Duggleby - 20-16, 3.35 ERA, 114 K Carl Lundgren - 18-13, 3.43 ERA, 133 K It won't be a cakewalk, but Boston's superior staff should be able to counteract the speed of the Phillies, who led the majors with 355 SB. Cy Young has oodles of experience, and their two young aces-in-the-making, Oscar Jones and Ham Iburg, have shown a maturity beyond their years. The Phillies do have Doc White, but the bottom half of their rotation is undeniably eaker than that of the Pilgrims. PREDICTION: Boston (A) in 8 |

1903 WORLD SERIES
9/12/1903 - GAME 1 PHILLIES 1 - PILGRIMS 6 It was a duel between the old guard and the new as Boston's veteran ace, Cy Young, outpitched the Phillies' Doc White. Young was a force on both sides of the plate as he hit a double in 4th with the bases full to knock in 3 runs and put the game away. 9/13/1903 - GAME 2 PHILLIES 7 - PILGRIMS 2 Hughie Jennings and the Phillies struck back in Game 2. Jennings knocked in 3 runs to lead the team back into competition. 9/15/1903 - GAME 3 PILGRIMS 3 - PHILLIES 8 Elmer Flick went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and Hughie Jennings knocked in 3 more to put the Phillies up 2 games to 1. They look like they have the Pilgrims reeling. 9/16/1903 - GAME 4 PILGRIMS 5 - PHILLIES 4, 10 innings Cy Young pitched a marathon 9 2/3 innings, but it took an RBI double off the bat of Ossee Schreckengost in the top of the 10th to win the game and tie up the Series. 9/18/1903 - GAME 5 PHILLIES 2 - PILGRIMS 3 Ossee Schreckengost won it again for the Pilgrims with a walkoff RBI single to put the Phillies away 3-2. Boston now leads the Series and Philadelphia's bats seem to be faltering at just the wrong time. 9/19/1903 - GAME 6 PHILLIES 3 - PILGRIMS 10 The Pilgrims' bats were on fire as they slapped out 17 hits with every batter getting on base at least once. Ossee Schreckengost continued his hot streak with 3 more hits. One more and the Series is over for the Phillies. Time to put up or shut up. 9/20/1903 - GAME 3 PILGRIMS 7 - PHILLIES 6 Cy Young got his 3rd win of the Series, and Buck Freeman blasted a 3 run bomb to finish off the Phillies. 1903 WORLD CHAMPS - BOSTON PILGRIMS 1st Championship SERIES Co-MVP's: Cy Young - 3-0, 2.60 ERA, 13 K Osse Schreckengost - .483, 2 2b, 1 3b, 9 RBI |

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1
JANUARY 1, 1904: The public unanimously feels that the first World Series was a resounding success, but the Phillies' player/manager Hughie Jennings fervently disagrees. Claiming an American League bias, he convinced a number of NL to call off the competition in 1904. There has been an outcry from the fans, but, it won't likely be resolved until near the end of the season, too late to reschedule the Series. Despite this bump in the road, baseball fever is sweeping the nation. The Highlanders and Pilgrims are expected to compete for the AL crown again, but all other team are still rebuilding. In the NL, it is once again the domain of the Phillies and Pirates. If the pattern continues, 1904 should belong to the Pirates. One change that has been implemented in both leagues is an increased schedule of 154 games. Some say this is to mollify the fans who are upset at the cancellation of the World Series, but it is unlikely that they will stop their protest. Prospect Watch: BRAD "BULLETPROOF" VEST His catching skills are already major league worthy, but his bat is raw to say the least. He will need at least a couple years in the minors before he develops his hitting skills enough to hold his own up here in the bigs. His "Bulletproof" moniker comes from an amusing incident in his last year of high school. While in the batter's box, the young man became distracted by a pretty young thing in the stands. Meanwhile, the pitcher let loose a wild one that plunked him right in the face. Coming out of his daze on his back in the dirt, he stood up, dusted himself off, and sauntered to first and taunted the pitcher with the words, "That all you got?" THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 4, ISSUE 2
SEPTEMBER 25, 1904: Just as we predicted, the Pilgrims and the Highlanders battled it out in the AL this season. Unfortunately for them it was for 2nd place. Surprising nearly everyone out there, the Philadelphia Athletics completely dominated the rest of the league. Much of the credit can go to player/manager Napoleon Lajoie, who had another astounding year. Too bad there won't be a World series, but there is good news. the public outcry got so great that the two leagues finally met and settled their differences, agreeing to a yearly 7 game series beginning next season. THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 5, ISSUE 1
JANUARY 1, 1905: Clearer heads prevailed in the offseason as management from both leagues agreed to reinstitute the World Series this season. From now on, it will be a best-of-7 contest, but the season will stay at 154 games. There are many questions in both leagues. Were the Athletics a fluke last season? The Highlanders and Pilgrims intend to show us just that. In the NL, is it finally time for a team outside of Pennsylvania to win? Prospect Watch: JAKE SCOTT Scott is our first pitcher we've profiled in the prospect watch, and he certainly is an interestingsubject. He has above average control and movement, but what makes him stand out from the crowd is an intangible ability to know what pitch to throw. Not all pitchers have this. Some get by on mind-blowing talent, but never think about the psychology of the game. Jake may take it to the next level, extending his career and turning losses into wins. Talents (Stuff/Control/Move): 110/75/65 Current Ratings: 18/54/8 |

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2
SEPTEMBER 25, 1905: As they promised, the Highlanders took back the crown from the upstart Athletics all while leaving their nemesis from Boston in the dust. The offense dropped off this season, and some are wondering if the baseballs have a different composition. Some have even started to call them "deadballs". Code:

In some ways, this looks like a mirror image of 1903. The Highlanders boast the top offense in the majors, but are somewhat lacking on pitching. The Reds have the top staff in the majors, but their offense isn't as good. In the first contest, the team with the pitching prevailed. Will that happen again, and whose chances are improved by the shorter 7 game format? PREDICTION: Cincy in 6 |

1905 WORLD SERIES
9/26/1905 - GAME 1 REDS 4 HIGHLANDERS 1, 13 innings The first game was one for the ages. A 1-1 tie through, it was finally broken open at the top of the 13th by a double from John Dobbs. The Reds would score two more runs, finally putting the game out of reach. 9/27/1905 - GAME 2 REDS 5 - HIGHLANDERS 8 It looked as if the Reds would be up 2 games to zip, leading 4-2 in the bottom of the 9th. The Highlanders' defense had been awful, bobbling four balls, but the remnant of the Reds' bullpen collapsed. Kitty Bransfield tied it up with a 2 out double, and pinch hitter Lee Tannehill poked a 3 run shot over the wall to walk off with the win. 9/29/1905 - GAME 3 HIGHLANDERS 3 - REDS 4 For the second straight game, the last at-bat decided it. Shutout through 8, the Reds bats came out of hibernation and scored 4 runs on 6 hits in the bottom half of the 9th to take a 2-1 Series lead. 9/30/1905 - GAME 4 HIGHLANDERS 3 - REDS 10 Noodles Hahn had it easy as the Highlanders' defense showed their true colors again with 3 errors. Reds coast to the win and a 3-1 Series lead. 10/2/1905 - GAME 5 HIGHLANDERS 3 - REDS 4 In the 3rd 4-3 game of the Series, Cincy squeaks by again behind a 2 RBI double from Hal Chase. The Cincinnati fans storm the field in triumph and carry pitcher "Three Finger" Brown off the field in triumph. 1905 WORLD CHAMPS - CINCINNATI REDS 1st Championship SERIES Co-MVP's: Noodles Hahn - 1-0, 2.12 ERA, 17 IP, 10 K Last edited by metsgeek; 02-04-2005 at 12:54 AM. |
