Name file
Anyone have a name file that has polynesian, southeast Asian and South Pacific names in it?
Longshot but I am hoping for the best. |

If no one has one available, I think I could probably cook one up for you. Are you looking for both first and last names?

Read that thread first to get an idea of what I need. If possible I would like a mixture of let's say 80% 'ethnic' names and 20% European names to simulate colinization. This would be a huge help to me. Yes, I need first and last names. Do not worry about nicknames I am going to let owners choose these themselves. |

How about I make you a South East first and a South East Last and you just replace the Latin American and Japanese name files with them?

OK. There are really 6 name files:
names.dat = European last names (roughly). This is the file OOTP uses for most player's last names. fnames.dat = European first names (roughly). This is the file OOTP uses for most player's first names. lanames.dat = Latin American last names. This file is used for a smaller percentage of the player's last names. lafnames.dat = Latin American first names. This file is used for a smaller percentage of the player's first names. anames.dat = Asian last names. Used much like the lanames.dat file. afnames.dat = Asian first names. Used much like the lafnames.dat file. So basically on the majority of players, the game uses the fnames.dat and names.dat files. On a certain smaller percentage it will either use the afnames.dat and anames.dat (Asian) or the lafnames.dat and lanames.dat files (Latin American). Whatever name type you want to be the most frequent, you'd call that file names.dat (for last names). in this case, that would be the Polynesian file I'm making for you. Then, if you had taken your previous names.dat file (which is European names), and renamed it anames.dat and lanames.dat, a smaller percentage of your players would have European names. You'd do the same with the first name files. If I'm still not being clear, I can explain it more thoroughly when I get the name file done.

Tiki Kalika steals third!
Here you go:
It's about 1200 Polynesian last names and about 900 Polynesian first names. That's not really very many but it will have to do. For "Polynesian" names, I took Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori, Fiji, Cook Island, Easter Island, Aboriginal, and Papua New Guinea names. I had no idea what frequencies to use so I took some of the shorter names I liked and bumped up the frequency. These .dat files are just text files so if you'd like to edit them yourself, it's easy. I have NOT tested these files for use with OOTP. You're the guinea pig. There's also a lot of apostrophes and whatnot in these names. I'm pretty sure OOTP will handle it just fine but if it doesn't, you may have to edit them out. There are instructions included. If you have any problems, let me know.

Thank you very very much
These will work for 90% of the players in the league. I will let you know how things are going. So let me get this straight. I put this name file first, then the Japanese name file to simulate some oriental names and then the european file to get a few of those and lastly the hispanic name file to have just one or two of those? |

Ok let me sure I get this straight before I attempt it.
I back up all the name files. I replace the European name files with the Polynesian files. This leaves me with Polynesian and asian and latin name files. On furthur thought I am going to just get rid of the latin name file since I will not need the names. How do I put the european name set back in place of the latin name set while leaving asian and polynesian names to be more common? |

1. Back up your current name files. 2. Extract the zip I gave you. It will overwrite the current European name files with Polynesian names. It will also overwrite the current Latin American name files with European names. The Asian name files will remain the same. If it turns out that the apostrophes are a problem, I can have them removed for you. Just let me know.

Polynesian 2 - To Hell With Apostrophes
I just took out all the apostrophes just in case you need it. Some of the names may look a little wierd but oh well<SHRUG>. Here's the updated file:

ok question on this file. The game uses the same name files for every league right? So if I wanted to change these I would have to change them back after creating the players, then change them everytime I was about to hit "proceed"...is that right?

Maybe someone can give you a better answer as I only play one league but, yes the game uses the same name file for all leagues as far as I know. So you'd want to change the name file when you switch to a different league. As far as I know, although I have no personal experience. Here is a thread about a nice little utility that eriqjaffe made to switch to different names:
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...light=Switcher And you can download it in the Utilities area at the Download Center or at the link in the thread to eriqjaffe's site. Hope that helps you any.
