Scandinavian names?
I'm just wondering if anyone has done a Scandinavian name file. I'm thinking of starting a Scandinavian-themed solo league (funny that, a Swedish history buff doing a league based on it
) and it would save a lot of time if someone had already made a good name file.

Oh, thought of another question about this. How does OOTP handle non-English characters? ie what if I wanted Björn or Hälsing or such? In Swedish there are only three additional letters (ö, ä, å) but I know in Norwegian there are more. I'd test this myself but I don't have a copy of OOTP on my work machine.

OOTP handles non-English characters just fine. I've seen them in Hispanic names.

If you find one, I would be interested as well. If you would like to construct one, I could help you out with some research or something.

Thanks for the links. It sounds like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and make it myself. I have a decent amount of free time right now so hopefully it won't take TOO long. sunnydoo, I'll upload it to the big OOTP resource sites once I'm done with it. If you want to drop me a PM with your email address, I'll let you know when it is done.
I'm going to try to get a good mix of current and historical names, drawing from the links you gave me as well as some of the classic works such as the Eddas and the sagas. It's good to know I can use accented characters, it would have annoyed me to no end if they didn't work ![]() Oh yeah I'm going to try to create an interesting nickname file as well. I've taken some Swedish and studied quite a bit of history so I should come up with some pretty decent ones.

I realize you`re mainly interested in Swedish names, but if you want a file with Finnish names, I´ll send it to you. I once created a Finnish league.

That's cool but I did most of the first name file last night. I'm also using names that were more medieval and archaic just because it fits the theme of my league better. You might want to post it on some of the OOTP sites though in case someone else wants to create one.

Ok good news: I've got the first and last name files done.
Bad news: when I enter them into the game, only the first name shows and the last names are all blank. Any ideas? I'm attaching the last name file. I set the frequencies all to 1 on purpose. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. EDIT: Definitely something in this file, the first name file by itself works fine.

I recall I also had problem with a reated name file the first time I tried.
Two causes come to my mind: There could be a soace missing between one name and its numerical value or Try deleting the # value at the end of the file. I`m sure you alreagy checked that you named your files correctly? What did you do with the other name-files like lanames.dat? I would recommend to save your names.dat file also under lanames.dat, maybe theres the problem. |

I had too many spaces in some of them at the beginning but I think I've gotten rid of the extra ones. All the original name files had # in them so I don't think that's the problem. Tell you what, could you email me your Finnish files? My email is njreynolds at wisc dot edu Maybe I'll notice something in them that will help me. It's a long shot but I'm stumped right now.

You need the # at the end of the file. I believe it's a flag to the game to tell it that is the end of the file.
I've looked over the file and the first thing that comes to mind that could be the problem is the funky characters. You could try deleting or changing all those and then try it out. EDIT: Also, maybe there is only one funky character that's screwing everything up. It's not necessarily all of them. I believe I once saw a name with that funky Spanish n, so I think some do work. You might want to delete the line after the # as well.

Let me know if you ever figure this out. I'd like to fool around with a Swedish league myself.

The name files seem to be working now! I'm just cleaning them up now.
The file must have been incorrectly encoded or something because once I moved them over to a new file it worked perfectly. Right now I'm restoring some of the special characters that I had apparently needlessly removed. I'm also formatting it so that the case will appear correctly in-game. I should be able to post them tonight sometime.
