Talking OOTP5 Excel History v5.20

A more up to date thread is at: www.400softwarestudios.com Coming Soon!

Introducing OOTP Excel History v5.20!

In the early days of my OOTP experience, I created a small excel workbook to track some of the stats for my solo OOTP league. As time progressed I added more and more to it and after awhile I decided I should try to make it useful and available to others. And so, after much tweaking and optimizing I am finally ready to offer it to the OOTP community.

"So what exactly does it do? Why would I want to use it?", you ask.

Basically, it is an excel workbook that uses CommishJoe's Exporter CSVs to create a statistical history of a league. It is like Cato's html history, but with two main differences: 1) mine does not create html files, but 2) it does allow you to record and analyze numerous stats easily.

It keeps track of the following (helpful for determining awards or evaluating players) for each year:

-full team win / loss records
-top 10 batters
-top batter by position
-avg batter by position
-top 10 starting pitchers
-top 10 relief pitchers
-avg pitchers by position
-top fielder by position
-avg fielder by position
-top 3 rookie batters
-top 3 rookie pitchers
-top 10 postseason batters
-top 10 postseason pitchers

It also tracks over the years:

-full team win / loss records totals, averages, and ranks
-number of award winners (or top nominees) by team and by position
-stat averages above a set minimum criteria

And finally, and perhaps most interestingly, it records every stat by every player for every year so you can find both single season records (AB, AP, and AF sheets) and career records (APT sheet) with a simple sort.

"Great! So where do I get it and how do I use it?", you say.

You can download the 200KB (approx.) zip file at the following sites:

If all else fails, then just email me and I will email it back to you.

When you open the excel file, it will ask if you want to update links, click "No". (If might also ask if you want to "enable macros". You need to for it to work. I promise they are safe, but if you want to make sure, just run it through a virus scanner.) From there, just follow the short "directions" on the "home" sheet and the workbook will do the rest. After that you peruse the sheets for whatever you may be interested in.

If you have any questions, please reply in this thread. If you have any constructive criticism, you can PM me. I will try to implement the best suggestions for improvement into future versions.

Thank you and enjoy,
Kier

P.S. I would like to give a special thank you to all the previous utility makers for enhancing my OOTP experience.

Got it! Try again JWay.
Thanks Kieran. I created my own spreadsheet for a solo league, but nowhere near the depth of yours. Look forward to using this...

Looks great! I keep having a problem modifying the "Location of the CSVs." Whenever I move it, it tells me "e:\desktop\csvs\league.csv" could not be found.

EDIT: Ok, I've uploaded v5.11 which should work fine for all. Until I can figure out how to have all the sheets recognize a new location, just put your CSVs in c:\CSVs (I figure that can work for most everyone). I just tested it on the CBL's league file for 2005 and it works fine. As before, it can be downloaded at http://geocities.com/kq76/ootp/ or by PMing me.

Sorry for not catching this problem earlier.

If you find that your file gets too big too fast (this will happen with leagues with many teams), you may want to use the "add new year without career sheets" button.

Thanks for providing your utility to the OOTP community. I'll be checking it out in the next few days.

You can add yourself to that list ... and I, too, thank all of you guys (and gals if any have been involved in utilities development) ... I can't get enough of this game!

More great stuff -- thanks again. As great as the game is, it's the community that makes it better.

bumping it for v5.20 that fixes some problems and adds some things.

Update History:

5.20
-Redid the VB code for it to also work with Excel 97
-Added sheet links on the home sheet
-Changed sheet names to be more intuitive
-Added Glossary
-Fixed problem with RL stat
-Fixed TRST Averages and Ranks for expansion teams

5.12
-Fixed a problem with the year data caused by 5.11

5.11
-Took away ability to change the path of the CSVs. Until, I find a better workaround, put the exported CSVs into c:\CSVs.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It's funny, when you hear of a problem you feel real bad, embarrassed even, so you try to fix it right away. It's nice to get the positive feedback to balance that out.

I received an email today from someone saying that they could not change the year and that the macro buttons were unresponsive. I am not yet sure that this is the problem for this person, but sometimes for me the workbook will freeze and I might have to restart the workbook and maybe stop a program or two, or even restart the computer for it to work. I think it has to do with how good your computer is and how many programs you have running at the time.

tried to use your util to compare with cato's - seems good so far - I do get an error (seems to be my lot in life) at the beginning of the import which says "copying cells outside destination range, all data outside range will be lost, continue y/n?" to which i reply yes. Any idea what's causing this?

Also, and I'm sure other people ask for this, but it sure would be nice if the program would just search pathed folders for the csvs (ie, 2001, 2002, 2003, etc), instead of having to manually shift them around.

best,
loc

Sounds like you have more players for a certain advanced filter than I allowed for (you must have a really big league then). Could you email me (kq76@hotmail.com) a zip of your CSV files and I'll take a look.

Yeah, that was the idea originally, but I had some problems with figuring a way to do that. Ideally what I would like is to tell the excel file, "ok, here's all my CSV folders in such and such folder, process every year on your own without me pressing more than one button". Problem is though, I'm not a programmer, just a novice, so problems like that are not the easiest for me to solve. Anyways, I'll take another look at it tonight and see if I can come up with some ideas.

EDIT: If anyone has some suggestion on how to do this, they are most welcome.

One year's worth of CSVs is a rar of almost 8 Megs? No way.. I'm guessing you're talking about a rar of your league files. Either way, upload it to the net, email me where and I'll go get it.
