Works great now, any thoughts as to why the Search button is grayed out.

Yep, I greyed it out.

In fact, that whole opening page was redesigned a few minutes ago.

The main use of the program changed. Searching the box scores will come back, but working mainly on the rest of the program now.

Right now I am working on the retired players part and removing any bugs.

Yes Jim, I will add that for sure!!

OK, I uploaded a new install program. Uninstall the previous version and also, erase the contents of the RETIRED PLAYERS folder. You can leave the empty folder there.

Install the new version.

The first thing you will notice will be the new main screen with pretty graphics.

Run config to set your league up, then under utilities run INDEX PLAYERS and then run INDEX ALMANAC then run ADD RETIRED.

Then you will be all set. I think later I will add a ONE CLICK setup button for first run.

If your league has had the Almanac on and saving the players, it should now have all of the retired players. Well, 99 percent. I will explain that in a minute.

All of the functions should work. Gold Gloves, 20 game winners, etc. All links should now work, even if the player is retired. Under team, that should work also. The 1st draft and 2nd draft choices should also work, even if they are retired.

I think have that part pretty solid now. I have one issue and I am baffled. Under my no-hitters, I have two guys listed. One I cannot find ANYWHERE!! The other does not have a no-hitter. I am not sure why.

When you are indexing the retired players, you may see a guys name appear more than once on the left. This is normal, it just means that he has more than 1 player file in the almanacs. Not sure why that is, only Marcus knows. The FIND PLAYER button works great. Just enter part of the name (first or last name) and it will find all of the matches, active or retired.

The Hall of Fame is greyed out. I will be working on it tomorrow. I have to sim enough of my test season to test it, as I have no HOF guys in it.

Let me know how many teams are in your league and how many seasons you have played and how the speed of the program is.

Oh, one more thing. If you use the Index Retired Players button with the re-index option on, go and delete all of the R5000.html files and above from the RETIRED PLAYERS folder.

When it adds retired players from the almanac, it starts at 5000, so it does not over write the existing players. You can change that by modifying the retiredCount.txt with notepad. Just change the number to a higher number.

First chance I've had to look in here since last night. Damn real life!

Question: Do you think I should have the program automatically index the player index (not the almanac) everytime you go into utilities?
Might be an idea. Automating it would help forgetful people like me

I think I'm about officially out of ideas for this right now... Nothing cool is coming to mind. Dammit, must keep you working LOL!

So, am I correct that ultimately the util will be able to create an HTML page with every player, past and present, from the league, with appropriate links?

Since you've uploaded about 12 versions in the last day, I should try the latest one out right now Will report back if I manage to break it.

Come on, rack that brain. I sure am!

I just added the cycle mod. When you list the teams, it lists everyone that has ever had a cycle. However, no link to their page yet. This is not uploaded yet. I also added the year to the teams win/loss record in that section.

I will now (well, not NOW, as I am going to sleep for a few hours), going to add the same thing for the rest of the 'feats'.

Yes, you are correct Bone. Once I get everything covered 'locally', then I will make it do the html pages. Since all the retired players are going to be in a folder, that will make it very easy.

What I see happening is the RETIRED PLAYERS folder will become the main thing. It will have a default.htm (or whatever you set it as) that will have all the stuff, links to additional home pages, retired player pages, etc.

For now, I will be working mainly on the local end, where the guy with the game can see it.

One thing that is killing me, I can't find anywhere where the team abbreviations are. I guess I will have to pull the whole team name out and write a formula for it.

I will need that information, as a lot of the files just reference the three letter abbreviation (why is abbreviation such a long word?)

Team abbreviations? If I recall, for Ryan's Util, you had to enter them yourself. I THINK Cato's does it automatically, but that's probably from the CSV export stuff.

I do have one very silly request. Is it at all possible for you to call Internet Explorer directly? Or let you choose your browser? You see I run Firefox on my system, which is a fantastic browser, and it's my default. However, player pictures don't display properly on the HTML pages. Just a small annoyance. Don't know if you can do that. It's just frustrating not getting the damn player images. (Not sure WHY it doesn't work in Firefox, but I get broken image links on all the pictures.)

Currently playing with the program right now. Thought I'd discovered a bug, when players were listed twice in the awards... Of course it turned out they'd won it two years in a row. Damn you Albert Reyes for confusing me. (Winner of first two Golden Gloves in the league I'm using to test this.)

I have two leagues. East and West. The MVP list is still listing ALL players as winning the West MVP title. Since there appears to be no differentiation in the HTML files, my suggestion would be to just dump this and just leave the player listed. If the person using it can't figure it out... Well, perhaps they should go play a simpler game

Already your program has turned up a gem. Nicholas "Roses" Hill. He's a CF, and a damn MACHINE! He's won a ton of awards.

You could get SERIOUSLY crazy with the stats. Have a box that picks up player of the week awards, batter of the month etc... It's all there in the HTML, but I don't think the figure is tracked anywhere. This Nicholas Hill has won Player of the Week at least ten times, and batter of the month at least six.

Another idea for a stat to track: All Star game appearances. The HTML lists them all. "Was selected to the 1955 Allstar game" for young mister Hill up there.

Looking at the batting leaderboard appearances on the page, there has to be something you can do there. Damned if I can think of anything though

One thing. Am I crazy? Or is there no easy way to list retired players? They appeared when I indexed the league etc... But once I've clicked around other boxes, I don't seem to be able to find a way to get the list back.

Anyway, that's all my thoughts for now. Going to carry on playing, see what else I can dig up. This is great fun

Out of interest, in the utils section, you've got the starting and ending year for the almanac... What does the # retired mean?

Another suggestion: Once the HTML index of players is implemented, how about a "Favourites" page. When you find a player you like, or want to track closer (like Nicholas that I found), have an option to add him to a Favourites list.

Suggestion for the pages: Maybe use OOTP6's HTML viewer program, showhtml.exe, and call that to load the pages. Would probably be quicker than loading the native web browser.

I'm still thinking about being able to open a random active players page. At the moment we have all the golden players of the league listed, but no average joes. Would be nice to just have a random active player to pull up, just to get to know the players better.

And seeing more draft picks would be interesting. That'd be a quick way to see if any player picked really late actually amounted to anything

I'm amazed at how quickly this rips through 10 years of seasons and almanacs. I especially like the team index and quick way to view your team history. Will it ever be possible in this team display to show these greatest highlights of your team and season: Record, final rank in standings, post-season result, top 3 hitters, top 3 pitchers, HR leader, pitching K leader, RBI leader, team stats ranks such as Runs Scored (5th in league) and Runs allowed (8th)...If you can pull this off from the stats, I will never need to write notes about my season ever again.

I think you also mentioned that you're going to figure out a way to total the season records into a franchise won-loss tally. That would be super, too.

As you perfect this, I would recommend an easier help or to do text file. For example, is it necessary to generate a new OOTP html report after each season, re-index, etc.

Download the latest EXE file and unzip it to the OOP 1 folder.

Run the program and click on CONFIG. Click on the BROWSER button. Then click on PICK BROWSER and it should go to the IE folder. If so, click OK, if not, browse to it. Click SAVE.

Now, it will use IE to open the web pages even if your default browser is something else.

If you want to change to Opera or Netscape, you should be able to browse to that folder, then when you click ok, type in the EXE file after the text in the text box. Click SAVE.

Basically, there is now a file called BROWSER.INI in the install folder. It either contains the word DEFAULT or a location. If the file does not exist, it is created when you run the program and is set as DEFAULT. (MUST BE IN CAPS)

Fast, eh?

All this will be documented one day. (programmers hate writing doc files)

That's a good question.

That is used temp as a variable for the part of the program that creates a string array to hold the retired players name. String arrays in the past have been memory hogs, so I was using that to play with what setting it should be.

It will not be visible in future versions.

If you notice that it is NOT adding all of the retired players, you may want to increase that number and run it.

If you go to the EVENTS page and click on RANDOM player, it picks from all active players, average Joe or Babe Ruth. It even picks if they were not on a page. Are you thinking more of picking from active and retired? Like the random button on Baseball-references site?

I guess you could select the OOTP browser with the new browser picker I picked. Not sure, if it works with parameters, then yes. I do not like it, as it has no back button.

I do plan on putting in the other draft choices, at least 1-10 maybe. Maybe a button above the 2nd draft pick that toggles to 3rd, 4th, etc. That would be hard to do, so it is down near the bottom of the list.

I am also very happy with the speed. At first I was worried, as it ran very slow, but that was in the dev. enviroment. Once I ran the exe alone, it was VERY fast. Of course, as I add more and more stuff, it will slow down. That is what I have to watch. It already slowed down a second or two when I added the CYCLE check.

I am going to work on the HOF display next and then go back to the team section adding more stuff there.

The francise record is already there. When you go to teams and click on a team, it displays all of their seasons and then shows total wins and total losses, world series wins, world series losses and division titles (actually, if they tied and lost the playoff, it don't show that, but what they heck)

It also shows all the cycles made by people. Plan on adding MVPS, CY Youngs, ROY, Gold Glove winners, etc.

Wow, I figured most people had forgotten my utility from eons ago (actually, I guess it was from OOTP 4?). I have considered getting back into the utility business after the debacle with the hockey game, but just haven't found the time. I have ideas for other utilities, though. Maybe while I am out on paternal leave I can work on it a little bit.

Comedian, your tool looks like a good one. I'll download it when I get home tonite and give it a try.

I just uploaded the latest version. I suggest an uninstall and then install the new one.

www.sim2005.com/oop1.htm

I made the interface a little easier to understand.

Steps to follow: (Generate league files from the OOTP program first)

Install program - Run program, click on CONFIG and change the settings to point to your league. Click on UTILITIES, then click on INDEX PLAYERS. Then click on INDEX ALMANAC. PUT 1000 IN THE FIELD CALLED # RETIRED or the program will die. No need to click on NEW SEASON.

You are now set to use the program. After the next season, after you click on PROCEED to next season, you can then just click on NEW SEASON and it will copy over the retired players automatically.

I would wait until the new season is already to start, after spring training or it will not be complete. You can always RE-INDEX the almanac at any time, but you will need to delete all of the p####.html files in the 'RETIRED PLAYERS' folder. These were all generated by my program, so it does not hurt your league at all. I will have the program delete them next version.

When running the Index Almanac for the first time, use the first date of the season and any date after the current season. So, if the season started in 1920 and you are ready to play season 1930, enter 1920 and 1930 (or higher, it won't hurt) in the boxes.

I thought I screwed things up, but I did not follow my own rules.

You must finish the end of season routine before the TEAMS function works.

There is an issue I discovered with the retired players. Some are disappearing.

I think it is this: When a player retires and he has no team, it is not marked anywhere. So, I can't find him. So, I have to write a routine that will do this:

If you can find a player, then go back in history looking at PXXXX files until you find his last one.

But I will figure out a way to get it to work.
