A Player whose Contract is terminated by a Club under paragraph 7(b)(2) of the Uniform Player’s Contract for failure to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability shall be entitled to receive termination pay from the Club in an amount equal to thirty (30) days’ payment at the rate stipulated in paragraph 2 of his Contract, if the termination occurs during spring training but on or before the 16th day prior to the start of the championship season. If the termination occurs during spring training, but subsequent to the 16th day prior to the start of the championship season, the Player’s termination pay shall be in an amount equal to forty-five (45) days’ payment at the rate stipulated in paragraph 2 of his Contract." Thus in layman's terms a contract awarded in arbitration is for one-year and is non-guaranteed. If the player is released within 16 days before the start of the season he is entitled to 30 days termination pay. If the player is released during Spring Training, but before the 16-day window, the player is given 45 days termination pay.

I'm more than a little embarrassed. I always thought that was the players number for some reason. The CBA provides "The Player and the Club shall exchange with each other in advance of the hearing single salary figures for the coming season (which need not be figures offered during the prior negotiations) and then shall submit such figures to the arbitration panel. At the hearing, the Player and Club shall deliver to the arbitration panel an executed Uniform Player’s Contract, complete except for the salary figure to be inserted in paragraph." So I hope you can see why I was a little confused as the numbers should be exchanged prior to the hearing. Thanks for clearing that up.

In regards to, IRL, releasing a player after arbitration I found this article saying you can do so if the team can document that he is out performed by other players competing for the roster slot. Last edited by byzeil; 07-03-2013 at 12:19 AM. |

My point is that it has not happened AFAIK. Secondly in recent seasons ie 2013 for example, only 3 of possibly hundreds of players actually go to arbitration. The remaining players are signed to contract extensions that perhaps don't allow for such releases.
