Petition to Get Customizable Playoffs into OOTP12

It's time. It's time, that is, to get customizable playoffs into OOTP. As customizable as OOTP is this is probably the most glaring way in which it is not. Different real baseball leagues have for years used different playoff formats and now even MLB is reportedly on the verge of expanding its playoffs in a way that OOTP can’t handle. OOTP is not just a game for fans of historical sims however. It’s also a game for those who like to create their own fictional universes and many of these people would rather their league’s playoffs more resemble the playoff formats of other leagues or sports than MLB’s. Before, luckily, their was a workaround for many of these people in the name of the Playoff Editor, but now that the author has virtually declared the mod dead, fans of the game whom custom playoffs are a must for are left with the options of continuing on with the previous version of the game or waiting for Markus to add the feature either in a future version of the game or in a patch to OOTP12. Please sign this petition to help us convince Markus that customizable playoffs need to be in OOTP12.

Why a twitter petition vs say via petitiononline.com? Well, I figure Markus might more appreciate the increased exposure the retweets will have considering @ootpbaseball and #ootp12 will be in them. The downside is anyone not into twitter will be less inclined to sign, but it really doesn't take much to do so. If you're already on twitter, signing / retweeting takes maybe 10 seconds (EDIT: it doesn't work using Opera or IE, but it does work using FireFox or Chrome). If you don't have a twitter account, registering may take 10 extra seconds.

So sign and let's show Markus just how many people really want customizable playoffs in OOTP12. Your signing just might make the difference.

I'm also curious: What, for you, are musts in a customizable playoffs for OOTP? For me, without thinking about it too much right now, I'd say they're:
  • byes
  • tournaments between different leagues (and by that I don't mean AL-NL)
  • recorded history of the playoffs
  • double elimination
  • mid-season (like soccer cups) and post-season tournaments
  • promotion/relegation resulting options
And other cool, but not yet must, formats I'd like to eventually see are:

Far and away the number one thing I want in OOTP. I'm trying to sign the petition but it isn't working for some reason. When I hit sign and retweet it doesn't do anything.

The ability to edit the teams in the playoffs in case a tie didn't get broke correctly would be my thing to add to this list..

I Would like to sign but I don't have a twitter account and I'm not interested at all getting one...

Hmm, I thought it was just a delay thing, but now I think it's a browser thing. I couldn't "sign and tweet" it either so I tweeted it thinking it would automatically catch it, but after I just saw your post I tried pressing that button using Google Chrome instead of Opera and it worked right away. Hopefully it works just fine in FF and IE (EDIT: if others could confirm or deny, that'd be great), just not Opera. Thanks for the heads up!

Japan has a really interesting setup for their playoffs right now. In the second round, the winner of the first round (2nd place vs 3rd place) plays the team that won the league.

The first place team automatically gets a win in a seven round series, so only a maximum of 6 games are played. The first place team has to win 3 of them, the second place team has to win 4.

In the first round, in a three game series, the 2nd and 3rd place teams face each other with all three games being at home for the 2nd place team.

Tom

PS by interesting I mean stupid. Last year a third place team won it all. I'm all for league winners only. If you win a 144-game marathon, you should make the finals. Very often the 3rd place team is below .500

Worth noting, by the way, is that the current setups in the California and Midwest Leagues are unable to be replicated in OOTP12. The California League because the top three teams in each division qualify for the playoffs, the Midwest League because the top two teams in each half-season qualify for the playoffs.

I feel compelled to point out, as the author of them, that OOTP does have customizable playoffs now. Yes, they are not as customizable as some would like, but you can do a fair amount with what's in the game right now. (Shaughnessy playoff format, anyone? )

That said, I will note that the original design document I submitted contained many more features than made it into the game. For example, there is no mention in the opening post of playoff systems which involve a round-robin affair in the first round. I included these in the document.

So Markus has a decent road map to follow, should he choose to take the journey.

That's incorrect. The playoff format involves the first and second half winners in each division plus one wild card qualifier from each division (the non-division winning club with the best overall record). Should a team win the division in both halves of the season, then two wild card teams qualify out of that division.

You're right, I was incorrect. I was trying to dumb it down, for some reason. Silly me!

Regardless, it's impossible to replicate in OOTP.

That is certainly correct.

You can't have wild card qualifiers when using the split-season option either. The Midwest League used this back in the 1990s when it had three divisions (three first half division winners, three second half division winners, and two wild card qualifiers, for a total of eight teams in the playoffs.)

I included this in my document too.

Can you elaborate more on the customizable playoffs it has now.

Are you talking about the custom playoff where you can pick posistion and seeding and the number of teams that get in?

That's it. And it offers a fair degree of flexibility too, especially compared to what OOTP had prior to its inclusion. You couldn't even do the Shaughnessy playoff format before, and that format was a staple of the minor leagues for decades.

Of course, there is always more that could be added...

I'll put my vote here. Markus knows that this is a priority for many of us so I feel that an online petition is overkill. I had bought every version from 6.5 through OOTP10 but did not buy OOTP11 because it did not have flexible playoffs. I have yet to buy OOTP12 for the same reason. I would love to have double elimination and all of the other formats that people have been talking about but all that I need is byes so that I can have playoffs like those being publicly considerred for MLB.

As soon as I can do a first round bye and the seeding issue gets fixed then I will put my money down again.

The seeding issue is HUGE for me. TonyM's editor did a great job of letting me fix that myself.

The ability to allow us to edit which teams are in and what posistion would fix the first half of both our wishlist.

I've been beating the drum myself for some time now about the need for more customized playoff options in OOTP. I haven't bought 12, but I'd certainly consider it strongly if Markus opened up the playoffs. Right now the game isn't even capable of assigning home field properly in all cases (unless this has been addressed and I'm unaware of it). For a game that prides itself on flexibility and realism, the lack of attention to detail in the area of playoffs is disappointing. I look forward to a definitive statement from Markus on where (if anywhere!) he's going with playoffs and whether this is something we can expect to see in a patch for 12. Thanks to KQ76 for focussing attention on this area.

I think that's what we've said that the last 5 years , this has been asked for since 6.5.
