I wonder if KW is regretting the Dye signing at this point. He's not producing, Everett has been mediocre, at least. Thomas will be back soon. Dye is going to be a very expensive bench player.

Another White Sox winner! Buehrle cruised yet again, the game is over in 2:24. I love that.

2 out of 3 over the weekend, not bad at all.

Most importantly, the starting pitching looked terrific. Garcia & Contreras shut the Cubs down, it's great to get them back on track after some rough outings.

Orlando Hernandez on the DL? I'm shocked!

But it was great to see Brandon McCarthy come up and pitch a hell of a game, even if Ozzie decided to pull him after only 78 pitches. I'm still scratching my head about that one, but...5.3 innings, 2 runs, 6 Ks? Not too shabby for a 21-year-old.

I don't know. The debate is still out on the Dye signing. He is beginning to get hot after a very cold start. And his defense has been very consistent. One thing I did notice in the USA Today this afternoon is that he is #15 in the majors in PA per HR. He is ahead of guys like Morneau, Tejada and Soriano. Not bad.

But yes, when Thomas comes back we do have a quandry at the DH position. Maybe KW can trade one of the odd men out for some prospects. LOL. I don't think that has ever been done in his tenure. He certainly cant trade for Everett again..

I wouldn't be surprised to see Dye and Everett splitting time in RF after Thomas comes back...kind of what they did in the second game of the Cubs series, where Everett may get the start, with Dye coming in a defensive sub late in close games.

That would seem to make the most sense, with Ozzie starting whomever is sporting the hot bat. I must admit that I was hoping for Dye to bounce back to a semblence of his former self, instead of putting on this Dave Kingman-like performance.

Sox prospect Brandon McCarthy is making his debut tonight. He looked pretty hot in spring training, but it was obviously difficult to make room for him in the rotation. The man is freakishly tall. Randy Johnson tall.

McCarthy already debuted, didn't he? He pitched against the Cubs. He matched up nicely with Prior for about 5.5 innings or so, left with a lead, and watched the Sox bullpen (usually outstanding) botch things up.

Pretty impressive looking kid, though. He was a tall one.

...or is there another McCarthy pitching for the Sox?

Oh, you're right!...I didn't notice it. 6 ks to 1 BB, 2 ER apparently.

Seems like there was a little hype around the guy during preseason and I'd been waiting to see how he would fare in the big leagues. Ah, these are good times for Sox fans, I envy 'em.

Soriano just smacked a homer against McCarthy. Man, putting Alfonso in the 5th spot has been useful for the Rangers.

Dye's former self wasn't exactly great, either.

He's "only" 6'7". Not quite as tall as Jon Rauch or Randy Johnson.

Anyway, McCarthy is going to be good. Ozzie sure threw out a ******ed, ass-backwards lineup tonight. He must be forcing McCarthy to pay some dues.

As a brief side note, I never quite realized what a solid radio broadcast the Sox offered up. From the first pitch, right up to "a White Sox winner," Rooney and Farmer are a good listen. Very conversational, humorous on occasion, never condescending and it seems like they get along really well. I know FJ commented in another thread about how he liked them, but I've listened more this year than any time in the past and am really enjoying them.

...in fact, the same goes for the Sox as a team. They are exciting and when Scott Podsednik gets on base things just get crazy. Fun stuff. I'm hoping to catch more than a few White Sox games in the coming years when I move to Indiana.

I avoid Hawk & DJ whenever possible for just this reason. Rooney & Farmer have been together for a long time, and they are a terrific listen. Rooney is a consummate professional, and Farmer is...um...a little cracked, but not in an incoherent Ron Santo way.

Of course, the day Frank Thomas comes back, he leaves the game hurt. Is it legal to hit from a motorized wheelchair?

Let's see...

Ozzie got a contract extension, which probably has JD ready to kill himself...

The Sox still have the best record in baseball.

Oh, and Ross Gload is hurt again.

Way to go, Sox fans. No posts since early June? OK, since the Twinkies are all but buried, there's gotta be something worth posting...

OK, some starters:
1. Trades: anything look reasonable? The hitting has gotten better, but it still isn't going to carry us if the pitching gets shaky. Any obvious upgrades available? Eric Chavez, maybe?
Speaking of shaky pitching, the McCarthy experiment seems to be indicating that he needs a bit more seasoning before he's ready for prime time. Does anyone feel confident that the Buhrle-Garcia-Garland playoff rotation is solid enough? Maybe a play for Schmidt would put us over the top?

2. Thomas is back: or is it the return of Ken Phelps? Is it enough to walk, K, or hit a homerun at every AB? Check out his #s so far:
.236 BA - .350 OBP - .677 SLG. Kind of a StatHedz wet dream of a season, no?

3. The Cubbies: sure, we split the season series with the hated North-Siders, but they're bumbling and stumbling their way to a typical Cubs-esque .500 season. This in itself should be cause for happiness among the 2nd citys' 2nd teams' fans.

Discuss...

How 'bout a nice 9 game losing streak, Pale Hose!? PLEEEEASE!?

Twins are having a pretty good season but the Sox just keep chugging along. Wonder if we'll see that post All-Star break meltdown this year? I dunno, these Sox look different.

Chavez would be nice, but the Sox are doing just fine with Crede, although he is decidedly one of the weakest links in the offense. I've always been very happy with Crede manning the hot corner, however. Pitching & defense, y'know.

Well, the McCarthy experiment is over, at least for now. He was sent back down to Charlotte so that the kids down in AAA can tattoo him for a while instead. The Sox called up Bobby Jenks from AA to help fill in the bullpen...Ozzie's going with a 4-man rotation until after the All-Star break. When El Duque comes back, I wouldn't be sad at all to see him as the de-facto #5 starter, so he can get more resting time. His terrific track record in the post-season would be nice to fall back on. That being said, Schmidt wouldn't be too bad at all. Allegedly, ESPN insider had a story about the Sox being very hot on Roger Clemens, although the Rocket would have to approve any trade. Besides, Ron Scheuler said he was over the hill ten years ago, and he's bound to be right about that eventually.

Wow, he is putting up Phelpsian numbers, isn't he? I hadn't realized that.

Meh. Right now, I can think of 13 other teams whose games against the Sox are more important. I'll be able to whittle that list down to 7 in October.

Geez, Kezzek...you addicted to anagrams, or what? Goddam, maddog

The Twins are playing pretty well this year, and I'd as soon see them go to the playoffs as anyone but the Hose. Truth be told, I can't figure the Sox out either. It's a long way to go still, and a lot of things can happen, but its been a long time since the Sox have had a whiff of first place this late in the season. I'm just enjoying it while it lasts.

Whachoo talkin' 'bout, Willis? The Sox were in first place at the All-Star break last year.

Of course, by this time last year, they had lost Ordonez for the year, and Thomas would soon go down. And the lead was only 2 (maybe 2.5) games.

This year is decidedly different.
