The weirdest part is that outside of 1986-87, he didn't give up 46+ for any other two-year span of his career. But those two years, bombs were off the charts for him.

Meanwhile, on SNY they just said that the Marlins-Mets game swept away on Thursday must only be completed if it is necessary to decide who makes the playoffs, or who gets home field advantage, but the latter is not even in play anymore. MLB has not said yet whether they'd have to complete the game on Monday if it would ONLY decide who's the #5 and #6 seed (probably between them and the Snakes).

...and he had a winning record in both of them!
Lance Lynn finishes this season with 44 Niedenfuers. 28 with the White Sox and 16 with the Dodgers. Basically 1 dinger for every 4 innings he pitches. It's by far the most he's given up in a season. His previous career high was 27 in 2017.

Giolito's 40 HR's came in 4 more innings that Lynn's 44. Both of Blyleven's "feats" were accomplished in almost 100 more innings that Lynn & Giolito.

All spots clinched tonight. Only seeding to be decided.

Texas win or Houston loss gives the Rangers the West title.

Astros & Jays currently knotted for the 2nd WC.

Marlins & Backs still in play for the NL's 2nd WC.

Disappointed the participants got decided before the last day.

Toronto owns the tiebreaker, so the Astros would have to finish ahead of the Blue Jays in order to get the second wild card.

Do both teams throw tomorrow's game?

They really should let either the division winner or the 1st wild card pick the team they want to play to prevent something like that from happening one day.

I don't think they throw, but for example the Jays will be starting a AAAA-type journeyman (probably Bowden Francis?) just by nature of their only rested starter being their ace. I would expect older guys like Springer and KK will also be getting the day off.

I also agree with the general point but don't think it much matters this year tbh. There's no particularly great team in the AL- especially not in the WC round- so I'm not sure Toronto or Houston particularly care if they go to Tampa (minus the injuries and...other absences) or Minnesota. Houston in particular is still potentially playing for a bye, too.

True. While TB got off to a great start, they're not that scary right now with all their missing players. And Tor is .500 against both while Hou is close to .500 against them. I am concerned that one day someone will purposefully not try in their last few games to fall to 6th. And it's so easy to solve that problem, just have the team with the best record pick their opponent.

From a fan's perspective though, I've had enough of Rays-Jays. 6 of the last 9 already, it could be 9 of 12. I haven't seen a lot of the Twins this year to know their strengths and weaknesses, but I'd just like to see the Jays play them to shake things up a bit.

I'd rather see wild card teams punished more after the first round with getting fewer home games in the subsequent rounds. Given the division winners a little more of a reward.

RIP Tim Wakefield, I think he might be one of the only pitchers to have a career WAR above 30.0 and an ERA above 4.00

James Shields also.

If you tell someone something that has a podcast, I would be careful of what I am telling them. That's like marrying someone that has 7 exes.

Does Miami have to finish their game vs the Mets?

I think the best way to do that is by shortening the WC series to 2 games. It being 3 removes a lot of the advantage that the two best teams get.

Marlins at Mets suspended game will not be completed.

The article doesn't mention what happens with the results of that game. Because Miami scored two runs in the top of the 9th inning to take the lead and New York never got the chance to bat in the bottom of the 9th, under the old rules the game would revert to the last completed inning, giving the Mets a 1-0 victory.

I'm not sure what happens now. It may be Miami gets a 2-1 victory despite New York never getting its half of the 9th inning. Or perhaps the game is annulled in its entirety. Or maybe the old rules still apply.

The SNY booth was convinced yesterday that the game would be scored a 1-0 Mets win, reverting to the last completed inning.

It will definitely not be wiped, since eight innings were played and it is thus "official".

Miami's seeding will not change no matter what they do, so the result of that game doesn't mean anything, so there's no point in spending all that time and money to play for 5-10 minutes.
