Sox Vote Nomar Garciaparra A Full Playoff Share

Sox vote Nomar a full playoff share

So, I wonder do guys like this get Championship rings? No, he wasn't on the Roster. But in theory, he was on the team and he helped them get wins. I know I've heard it happen in sports like basketball. But I wonder if it would happen in baseball.

Thoughts?

Not sure... I know with the NHL you MUST have played in at least one game to have your name engraved on the cup....

That is a league thing, but for Nomar Garciaparra get a share of championship money is simply a team issue? There are probably no league regulations on these.

No, traditionally - and probably in the union contract - the players get to decide how to split the player's share of the money for the playoffs. Even the teams that lose in the first round get some playoff money.

This year's shares are like $200,000 for a full one.

I think he deserves it. He was with them for half the season and ultimately, he was part of the team for years. It might not "seem" like a popular decision, but there are 50 full shares and even team doctors get voted a playoff shares from what I understand.

So its not like some guy is getting shafted here, IMHO.

In his New Historical Abstract, Bill James details the story of the '32 Cubs, NL Pennant winners, managed by Rogers Hornsby -- at least at year's beginning. James tells it better than I:

"[Woody] English was the Cubs' team captain in 1932, and conducted the famous clubhouse meeting at which it was decided not to pay a World Series share to Rogers Hornsby, and to pay only a one-half share to Mark Koenig. Hornsby was the Cubs' manager the first four months of the 1932 season, playing a game now and then, concentrating for the most part on alienating as many people as possible. He was fired in early August, with the Cubs in second place, and Mark Koenig was acquired in mid-August. Koenig played brilliantly at shortstop over the last six weeks, and the Cubs won the pennant.
The Cub players, led by English, voted a one-half share to Koenig, and nothing to Hornsby. This become controversial when (a) Hornsby filed a protest with Judge Landis, claiming he was entitled to a share of the money, and (b) a few sportswriters, basically trying to stir up trouble, accused the Cubs of being cheapskates for voting Koening only a half share."

Long story short, Commissioner/Judge Landis sided with the Cubs, and the Rajah got nothing. Though maybe it's Mark Koenig that's rolling over at Nomar getting a full share.

I remember reading about players getting World Series rings for playing for teams from which they were traded. I think it was about the '86 Mets, but I'm not sure.

If the team unanimously voted for Nomar to get a share then he should get it.

I think it should be up to the team and they have made their decision.

As for a ring, I guess that also comes down to the team.

I think anyone that was on the active roster at any point in the season gets a ring. I'm pretty sure I remember with the yanks even the midseason callups getting one. That might just be a yankee/steinbrenner thing though, dunno for sure

Baseball mythology has it that Koenig was a close friend of Babe Ruth and Ruth used this as motivation for the legendary "called shot" in the '32 series as a way to show up the Cubs players for unfairly treating the Babe's buddy.

I also have heard the players vote on shares for everything short of the front office. Some teams have been known to stiff batboys and equipment managers out of any $$.

This whole year just proves how not-clutch Nomar is.

I think it's up to the organization who gets rings. I remember when the Angels won their championship everyone got a ring, announcers to janitors everyone got one. They also gave one to Gary Discarcina since he had been a part of the team for so many years but never got a chance to win one.

No. You must play at least one game in the final 7 game series. A few years back, Jersey dressed Daneyko (iirc) so he could get his name on the Cup despite being a press box regular throughout the playoffs.

I wonder if the Red Sox will vote Mariano Riveria a full share also, considering how he help the team get to the World Series.
