OOTP Origin Maker
Seeing Henry's Population database in the General Forum made me realize some might be interested in this file:
There was a thread a while back (I can't seem to find it) regarding the generic player origins and an alternative to players being from USA, CANADA, JAPAN, etc. I took the formula that kq76 created and applied it to cities in the US and other countries in the game. The file will randomly generate a city/state based on population figures. By using the Player General Info CSV export in the game you can replace the Origins fairly quickly. (make a backup of your entire league folder the first few times you try this) 1 Export the Player general info (from the Advanced League Setup) 2 Sort the entire selection by the 'origin' field 3 Paste the values from the OOTP Origin Maker over the existing USA etc 4 Format the 'height' field to M-D; for some reason Excel imports this field as a date 5 Save the file as CSV and Import the Player General Info via the League Setup in OOTP I had to reduce the file in order for it to post it on the board. The full file also has cities for Cuba, Venezuela, United Kingdom and Australia. If there is interest, perhaps one of the download site will host the entire file. |

Looks good. I'd be interested in the full file once it gets hosted. A couple of suggestions though:
-set it to manual calculation (tools | options | calculation tab | manual), that way it only recalculates when you press F9, otherwise you'll have to wait and lose what you had all the time when it recalculates on its own -scroll each sheet to the top -say where you got the population figures and how you turned them into the #s in the A columns as it'll help others tweak it for themselves if they want to maybe add more countries/cities.

I do not remember where I got the population figures from. It has been a while since I created this and I have lost the web site I used. I remember thinking that the figures seemed to be prior to the last census based on the number it had for my hometown. I think the US list has most cities with a population greater than 15k. I wanted more variety of Canadian cities so I got some of that data from an atlas. The #'s (in the hidden A column) determine the frequency each city will appear. The difference between the 1st number and the number directly below it represent the population of the city (in thousands.) For example: 1 Aberdeen SD 25.8 Abilene TX 149.7 Addison IL The figures I had showed Aberdeen SD with a population of 24,800 and Abilene TX with 123,900. Abiline will be approximately 5 times more likely to be generated than Aberdeen SD. |

Just nit-picking here. You went to all the effort and I commend you for that. However, baseball players do not uniformly come from everywhere in the United States. There's a bias to Florida, Texas and California because of the warmer weather. There's a ton of people in the New York metro area, but John Franco is the only major leaguer I can think of. While Tampa-St. Petersburg is smaller, they have a lot of major leaguers.

The list is based on population only, so a higher number of origins will be New York City (approx 2%). After using the file for several seasons in my solo league, I too have become frustrated with the frequency of players being from areas that historically do not generate a great number of baseball players.
I have not played with the file in a while, but I have intended to edit it so the areas where baseball is played year-round will have a higher percentage of players. |

This is a good idea. i don't know how i missed this in V5. i have one question.
Is there any way to apply these origins to the rookies as they come in? To make the change in the player_general, i would have to hunt for all the rookies. |

That's what I thought too, but it is actually easy. If you already changed people in your league they won't show up under USA (Japan, Aus, etc.). They will show up under their new origin. So just sort and then copy over USA, JAPAN, AUS, etc.

I've actually running into a different problem. All of my guys are showing up 6'1 or 5'1. I'm using excel 2000. I'm converting height to the M-D format too. Any ideas?
...NEVERMIND.... I got it working. Must have reverted to my last saved version.

blueturf - first off, let me just say, great job putting this together - I will be implementing it into my league very soon.
I did notice one very minor issue, however. When a random number is generated in column E, Excel will go to the A column and find the range which that number falls between and take the first of the two cells. The problem with this, as it stands now, is that Zion IL, the last city listed, will never be used as it will never be the upper value on the random number generated. Per 2000 Census, Zion's population is 22,866. So, if I am understanding things correctly, the last two rows should look as follows: 150982.4 Zion IL 151005.3 Since the very bottom row will never be used, it won't matter that there is no city name in there....hope this makes sense.
