40 man roster - MLB rules question and feature point?

is there a point to a 40 man roster? I mean, keeping a guy on the 40 man roster enables him to go to the ML roster, but if he's in AAA all it does is add to his service time and that effects his contract. Am I missing something? I mean, if someone gets hurt, put the guy on the 40 man and then take him off when you send him back down. Does MLB REQUIRE 40 men on the ML roster? If so, this is sort of a big loop-hole that needs to be addressed.

It's for the rule 5 draft. Any players with more than 3 years in the minors and not on your 40 man are unprotected and can be claimed by another team.

What's the point of the rule 5 draft? To keep clubs from stockpiling too many players in their minors that could probably be playing somewhere in the majors.

ok, but I'm saying, you can then leave just 25 players on the 40 man all season so that no one gains any MLB service time, then fill it up before the offseason and rule V draft, right?

That would make sense...if you didn't have to make any roster moves during the season. Anytime you call someone up from the minors, they have to be added to the 40 man roster.

When you want to remove a player from your 40 man roster, you designate them for assignment. The player then has to clear waivers to go to your minors. Another team could claim them, or the two teams work out a trade.

The A's just designated Chad Harville for assignment. The Astros wanted him and traded Kirk Sarloos to the A's for him.

Hmmm... and to think I designated Chad Harville for assignment in OOTP6. Nobody wanted him. Guess where he went? Back to AAA and off my 40-man roster.

Players are not getting major league service time when they are on the 40 man and in the minors, but you are using an option year when you do this.

To simplify what everyone has said... waivers. You can put him on the 40 man just before rule V, but you can't take him off again. Thus he's stuck there for his career if he's any good. Because if you try to take him off, he has to clear waivers, and someone is bound to be willing to use a 40-man roster spot on him.
