Rookies By Year
Ever wonder, if you should trade away your mid first rounder, because you are unsure of the depth of the next draft?
Ever wonder if you shoudl trrade away that 30+ year old guy for picks? Ever wondered who are the upcoming rookies for a draft? Well wonder no more... Rookies By Year using the Lahman db is here. Many more features to come in this new and hopefully useful tool. Basically the way is works is: 1) You log in using the demo login and pass provided 2) You choose a year you want to see 3) If you want, you can sort by certain fields (I will be adding more sort options soon) 4) You click on Help if you want to see what is coming up in new versions soon, or how to use it And if you have questions or comments or ideas, you can contact me... Isn't this just a rehash of the same info that is already readily available at baseballreference.com (without having to "login")?

Yes it is, however I don't beleive they allow you to sort by various fields.
Also I will be adding much more info to it soon, to make it a more complete source for information... |

What's so hard about using his database? You log-in and pick a year and it shows the info. It takes maybe 5-10 seconds longer than baseball reference and it's more indepth. I think it's a good idea and hope you continue to work on it.

I would say that this is a great addition to the OOTP community. Keep up the good work!
Mark and Mark... slamming or taking away the spotlight is both your guys motto isn't it? You both continue to do it over and over and over on this board. Wow!! Kurtis

Not slamming at all. I think its exemplary, but didnt want him to do all that work when the info is already available.
Knock yourself out. If you want to put the work into it, so be it. I'll continue to get that info as I've done for the last 4 years. Over and over? I think not. Sorry, Kurtis. Didnt realize you were on duty tonight.

Kurtis, exactly what was 'slamming' or 'spotlight taking' about this post. |

Kurtis, I asked Randall a simple question, and he answered it, end of story. How is that "slamming"?
I'm definitely guilty of slamming AOL, but I'd be interested in what else you think I've done to warrant the accusation you made.

For those that find this useful, GREAT, I plan to keep updating it as often as I come up with ideas....
My list of ideas I am working on are under Help. If you think of something you'd liek to see that is NOT in there, that you feel should be, let me know, and I'll try to get it in... My HOPE is for this to have all that baseballreference.com has and more... |

Working on more upgrades today...
Just switched it over to a SQL Server backend running off of SQL Views, so the load times on the queries should be significantly faster (I think it was taking 3-6 seconds before, should take 1-2 seconds now I guess)... Adding abilty to sort by more fields, including (for hitters), BA and OPS, and (for pitchers) ERA and WHIP. Next will be building the player search (you know their name, but not their year, you can find them off their name) and the player page (click on a players name, see all their stats broken down by year, and sortable in there as well as the list of players)... A few other things I'll be working on, but not sure I'll get to them today. They are listed on the Help page once you're logged in... |

Cooley and Mark...if you're not going to use this thing, great! Keep it to yourselves and move on to the next thread. I don't see why you have to be such jerks about it. This guy obviously put a lot of work into this, only so that you two, in a line of text apiece, could tell him that he basically wasted his time.

For those who DON'T like this, I would ask you top do one of two things for me...
1) Give me ideas to improve it... or 2) Don't use it, and STFU... For those who find it useful, just follow #1 from above... And FYI, if you go to the page, and it comes up with an ERROR, wait 5 minutes, and try again. I may be working on the page at that moment. If it's STILL not working 5 minutes later, please let me know... (My EMail and AIM up above) |

Amazing as my actual reason for posting was to let you know (if you didn't) that this was available somewhere else so if you didnt want to reproduce this info, you could move on to something else.
No malicious intent was present in my post. |

I know this info is avail...
I am doing this project for a FEW reasons: 1) I HOPE to improve on what baseballreference has in place. I don't really like their layout or search abilty 2) I am testing my abilty to create a secure, robust application using ASP/SQLServer If you have constructive ideas, I would LOVE to hear them. I WANT to improve this to the piont that baseballreference.com is obsolete, and unless I get ideas from people on what they would want, I am gonna run out of my own ideas pretty soon... |

FYI, Player Search is working now...
For a test, pick your favorite player, and type in thei last name (i.e. aaron) or if you only are sure on part of the spelling, type what you know (i.e. aa)... |

Are you planning to do more with this than just rookies by year?
I do like how you can sort the columns. I always thought it would be nice if bbref listed all the players for a year and let you sort their stats. Yes, you could do this in excel with the lahman db, but online is convenient.

Yes I plan on doing more than Rookies By Year.
My currently planned goals for the nes few days is to fill out the player pages showing their stats for each year, with totals. After that I will do a year search that shows all teams which were around that year (or search on a team name and find out what years they existed, or a city t0 find out all teams ever in it)... This shoudl help leagues that like to follow MLB expantion... Another idea is to pick a year, and see all players that were on MLB rosters that year, and their stats for that year (sortable by team, stats, etc). After that I plan on looking through baseballreference.com and seeing what other ideas I can get from there... Also QUITE interested in what people would find interesting to see on a site like this. I have full access to the lahman db, which I have converted into SQL Server, so any stats that are in there, I can pull out. As for the sorting columns, what language are you using that you'd wish to sort in (PHP, ASP. NET, JAVA, etc)? The OOTPdb is written in ASP, but the same concept that I use for sorting, shoudl be able to work in any language, you'd just need to change the syntax.... Here is an example of the sql string being built for the hitters: sqlstmt = "SELECT * FROM Batting_Career " sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " WHERE ((HSum)>=50) " if ((dy<>0) or (pn="")) then sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " AND (DebutYear='" & dy & "') " if pn<>"" then sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " AND nameLast Like '%"&pn&"%'" sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " ORDER BY " if hs="HR" then sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " (HRSum/YearCount) Desc," if hs="SB" then sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " (SBSum/YearCount) Desc," if hs="BA" then sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " (BA) Desc," if hs="OPS" then sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " (OPS) Desc," sqlstmt = sqlstmt & " nameLast, nameFirst, playerID;" rs.open sqlstmt, conn,1 ,1 Thos if statements AFTER the "ORDER BY" are what change the sort order, based on variables that are already set up above in the code... If you have more question, let me know... |
