Looking for a utility that calculates park factors based on OOTP park factors

I've been using the Cato History utility and think it's great. After running the program for this past season, it was brought to my attention that a couple of parks that were neutral turned up as extreme hitters' (PF=1.22) and pitchers' (PF=0.91) parks.

I realize that the program calculates PFs solely based on the number of runs scored in each stadium, and that this is likely a sample size issue, more than anything else.

I'm leaning toward using a utility that generates Win Shares without park effects, and then adjusting the numbers afterwards with a "Park Factor" that would be based on each stadium's OOTP park factors.

Does anyone know of any programs that do this. Even if I need to manually enter each stadiums' factors, this would really help me out.

Thanks in advance,

Robert C Buss

I don't know of any utilities that would do this, but:

1) you're right, park effects should be calculated over a number of seasons, not 1, or regress it back several years.
2) there are a number of ways to calculate park factors and of course there are differing opinions on what way is best.

Sorry, I know this isn't much help. If you really want to, I'd suggest researching this topic on the internet and then perhaps coming up with whatever system you feel is best.

I think I've solved the problem, and have written an Excel spreadsheet for my league's ballparks (IOSBL). I don't think I'll be making any further adaptations, due to time constraints. No macros. I can send the file to anyone who is interested. Special thanks to Henry, who's research was the basis for the table.

It really depends on what you expect your PF to represent. If you're trying to see whether a park was a hitter's or pitcher's park in a specific season, then Cato's utility is probably calculating this pretty accurately based on a certain season's stats. It sounds like you are trying to figure out whether a park is a hitter's park or pitcher's park by nature. In this case, you are correct that you would have to use the park ratings to find this information.
