At least 5.3% of baseball writers are idiots...
That's the number that didn't vote for Willie Mays to be a first ballot HOF.
6.8% didn't vote for Musial, 6.6% for Ted Williams... AND 4.9% FOR BABE RUTH! One in twenty sports writers didn't think the Babe deserved to be honoured in the hall? ??? Any ideas on their reasonings? |

I dunno, but I would certainly venture to guess that the actual percentage of idiots amongst BB writers is much much higher than 5.3.

There truly are some head-scratchers out there. One that gets me is that Nolan Ryan was on 99% of the ballots, and I thought it would be much less than that.

I'd say close to 50% of all sports writers in general are idiots.

I'd say close to 99% of all sports writers are smarter then me.
I'd say I disagree with 65% of all sports writers. |

I think most of the voters got caught up in Ryan's strikeout totals and didn't look at the broad scope of things and see that he really wasn't that great of a pitcher.
Babe Ruth was also on the first ballot ever inducted so perhaps some sports writers just got the rules wrong, hell some may have even thought he was still playing since his last year was prior to his induction. It is surprising that Cobb got more votes then Ruth since you always hear stories about how hated he was. |

I'm not sure if writers as as fickle nowadays as they use to be, I know that Ted Wiliams lost out on a couple of MVPs due in large part to his relationship with writers.
December 7, 1939: Lou Gehrig, age 36, is unanimously elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame (Special Election), the sole choice this year. The five-year waiting period is waived for the Iron Horse. |

Maybe these show the percentage of writer's wives that the players boinked.

5.3% isn't a bad figure considering that Americans don't really trust 99.9% of politicians at their word.
Also, in my travels across the galaxy I'ld say that 57.1563% of people are truly idiots. This means that baseball writers are over 1000% better than the average Joe. If we all had the same opinion, this world would suck.

The percentage thing is messed up from the very begining. Since the very first selections did not get the full vote, lots of voters got into the mind set of " he's not as great as Ruth, so I'll not let him get a percentage higher than Ruth". Some voters would categorize players into "first ballot HOF", "second ballot HOF", and so, and would not vote for the player until they feel the time is comfortable.

Not only did Cy Young have to wait until the second year, but he only was on 76% of the ballots. Odd.
