When is a trade a trade?

I've always wondered this.. When is a trade a trade? Is it a trade when one person suggests something and the other replies by email, IM, or whatever, that that is acceptable? Or is it a trade when the second party posts their confirmation on the league's trade board that they agree to this trade?

If there's also a distinction between what is officially a trade and what is just good manners, please point that out. That is, is it wrong to back out of a trade once terms have been agreed to being acceptable, but not yet posted?

In the past I've just gone and done it to avoid any issues, but I think it's time I get others' opinions.

I believe it is when the 2 teams confirm it by whatever means the league have to do this (Bosi, email or message board).

It was talked about before here:

I say a trade is a trade when it is posted on the league's trade board, and approved by both GMs.

It is not wrong to back out of a trade, before it is posted, but it shows bad manners and represents that you are not the best of the best GMs.

Thanks guys, especially for that link. I'm going to go ahead and post it. It wasn't that big of a deal to me. I just wanted to consider some other things, not necessarily back out. To be on the safe side in the future though, I'm just going to make sure I say, "this is not an offer, just what do you think?" That way I can still reconsider after I hear back from them.

Kieran,

I'm with MLBO on this one...

I try to make it real clear when I'm just asking about a player.

Seems like this type of issue crops up in emails more often than IM.

One time I was working on a deal that involved multiple players and a pick. I thought I was getting the extra pick, but when I saw the trade posted, I was listed as giving up the pick. I just confirmed the trade to avoid any hassels.

P.S. - glad to see Yoda's back... thanks for the picture - added it to a birthday greeting to my best friend and he enjoyed it.

As the Commish, a trade is not a trade until both parties confirm it on the board. As an owner, I'd like to take someone at their word, but again nothing is truly final until it's posted.

I'd say that a trade is official whenever the two sides agree on the board or whatever that leagues rules are.

However, if someone asked me nicely a reasonable amount of time I would probably let them out of mosts trade.

There was one time where I made a trade and then traded the key player in the deal to another team making a nice profit. The guy was pissed (he had to go and didnt confirm) and refused to confirm unless he got a better deal. I was the commish and gave him a deal which he thought was better but really wasn't (he wasn't too bright)

What about if the trade is completed and confirmed, then couldn't be completed because a team wasn't in possession of a draft pick they tried to trade? This happened to me once, and when I tried to renegotiate with the guy, he backed out - said he wasn't thinking straight that day or something, and didn't want to renegotiate. Needless to say, I was ticked.

i think if a trade was completed and agreed to, and then all of a sudden the trade was void because a draft pick was unavailable, AND then the owner refuses to negotiate, the commish should step in and do an arbitration type process to complete the deal.

of course, before making a deal if both owners checked to make sure that they were making a legal deal, this wouldn't happen.
