Consistency

I'm having some trouble figuring out exactly what effect this has on player development and performance.

My best use for a Good consistency rating so far is keeping washed up pitchers who have good career stats in the rotation and ending up having a player with a 3 in avoiding runs pitching to an actual 3 ERA.

However, my question is what effect this has on players who first come up. Take for example my left handed reliever he has all 9s in ratings and good clutch and doesn't need an winning team(all those are favorable) and he has GOOD consistency. However he had two bad seasons when he first came up and had around a 6 ERA both years. Now however, three years later, he is still pitching to a 6 ERA even though he should be a primier setup guy.

So the question is were both flukes or does conistency really effect this much?

Well they both sound consistent, be it good or bad. However, I don't normally find consistency all that reliable of a rating. I always thought of it as a game to game thing though. For exampe, an inconsistent player will often have a great outing, then an awful one.

This seems less important for batters from my own experiences though it certainly can lead to some up and down seasons as well.

Mainly I focus on this when dealing with relievers. Having inconsistent relievers can cause major headaches unless they are just SOOO damn good even during a "down" period they are putting up decent numbers. With starters I only worry about consistency if they are borderline quality or if it is a star pitcher and they are looking for a huge contract I may be hesitant.

The players you describe above could easily be seeing these seasons for countless other reasons which if I could see their html reports I could probably pinpoint for you. Of course it could simply be that they are having odd seasons to this point or it is something else entirely such as scouting errors, how you use them etc.
