Upgrading Computer

Am I oversimplifying what I believe can happen when I move to a new computer?

My hope is that I can carry the hard drive with all of my game data into the new computer as the D Drive, direct OOTP to the D Drive as opposed to C drive and all will be well.

Is that realistic or are there pitfalls I am not considering?

Thanks

I'd partition the new drive into a C and a D and just copy over the .lg folder over to your new D drive. You could probably install your old hard drive into your new computer (it's probably compatible, but maybe not?), but that might be more hassle than it's worth (if it's a really old and/or small HDD, I wouldn't bother).

If you use steam, look into making a "steam library" folder. Otherwise, just use Settings > Expert > Custom Data Path.

Thank you for the response.

You mention just copying the .lg file. Is that all that really needs to get copied to successfully?? For instance, SaveGames>OOTP Baseball 25>Major League.ootp25.lg? That shows as 9KB.

The reason I ask is because my universe has been going since 2009, 2 seasons per year and I am in 2041 currently. When I back up the league it is nearly a 24-hour process (ideally faster in the new machine with SSD). I have tried copying that backup, after the 24-hour process to the new machine but something didn't make it over and I could not get it to run.

That is when I figured I would just take the whole drive, move it into the new computer where I know all the necessary data is there and then just redirect the game on the new computer to the D drive.

My sons are handling the technical side and they haven't indicated the drive transfer would be an issue.

If it's only 9kb, then no, that's not it. OOTP can be a bit weird in that it can have multiple locations where it looks like your files might be. I think the most reliable way of finding where your league's files are is to go to Settings > Troubleshooting and then press "open folder containing saved games". For instance, that opens my "D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Out of the Park Baseball 26\data\saved_games", which is indeed where my files are, instead of my documents folder, which is not where they are.

From there I'd just copy your *.lg folder to an external drive and then copy it from your external to your new computer. You could do it other ways like over a network, or uploading online somewhere and then downloading it, or installing the old drive into your new computer, but using an external drive would probably be the easiest.

Your *.lg folder might not be the only folder you have OOTP files you want to keep, but it probably has everything you need to keep playing your old league. The one other folder a lot of people would probably want to copy over is their tables folder and user.dat file, but there could be others.

And you're right to bring up the HDD vs SSD difference. You definitely want OOTP running the game off an SSD. And you could still keep your files on the HDD, but it'd probably be worth it to you to have them on the SSD. Personally, I'd save the HDD purely for backups.

If your boys know what they're doing and are fully willing to install the old HDD into your new computer, then great. Then you can always easily move the files around as you want later.

I have done this several times, and it works great.

As mentioned you only need to copy your .lg folder. This should be found in 1 of 2 places. Under your Documents or in the install folder on whatever drive you installed to.
One thing to keep in mind is that Ballparks, Ballcaps, Jerseys. Logos, Photos, Schedules and Face Gen files, as well any other folders you may have modified, can also be copied from version to version.

I recently ported to an external USB and runs fine. Just reinstalled it on the USB and copied saved game folder. Don't have to reconfig anything. I don't use auto-play so can't speak about speed differences if any. Just be careful if you have game settings for stat views etc because OOTP doesn't keep those with the saved game. They will be lost.

I appreciate all of the comments. He ended up copying the league files from D: (my old HDD) to C: (new SSD). When I start OOTP in Steam on the new computer, the game loads with two hiccups I will get to in a second. The game is right where it should be and looks great. I even started the next game and it was progressing nicely until...

The hiccups I mentioned we when opening the game, actually Continuing the game, there are two messages that pop up:

Templates_Engine::load_template_file - cannot open template file boxscores_page.tpl

clicking OK through that gets:
Load_templates() - could not load template_boxscores_page.tpl

I had gotten through an inning of the new game and tested my fear that the boxscore issue was going to be a problem. I clicked Boxscore and got into a continuous error file loop that prevented me from getting back into the game.

Do you have suggestions to clear these template boxscore issues? I could live peacefully if I could get this boxscore template issue corrected.
Thanks

Search for posts about deleting the hidden configuration file. After you move the game, that file remains and still points some things to the old place. Deleting it allows a new one to replace it and that one will point to where things are now.
