Joe Morgan on BA

A popular sports web site has a chat set up every Friday with Joe Morgan. Here is one of the questions and answers from the most recent . . .

Quote:
Jeff (Los Altos): Joe, what is the most over rated statistic in baseball?

Joe Morgan: Batting average. If you hit .300 they say you are a great hitter. That means you are making 7 outs out of 10 and if you make those outs with runners in scoring position, you are not a good hitter.
Well, I think that clears that up . . .

I did start the Joe Morgan on OBP thread... yikes

Great pearl of wisdom from Joe. If you can't understand absolute vs. relative, you've got serious problems.

How the heck does he consider anyone great, then?

Never mind... there's only one HOF player in his universe ... him.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

Oddly enough, I agree that batting average is one of the most overrated stats - just not for the reasons he says.

Great great player, one of the most intelligent players of all time.

Terrible terrible commentator, one of the least intelligent of all time.

Strange isn't it?

How is it that he had such great sense on the field, and yet as an announcer makes Bill Walton sound Churchillian?

I wouldn't go THAT far. Walton sounds like an imbicile no matter who you compare him to.

"I remember back when I played for Coach John Wooden at U.C.L.A. That kind of foolishness wouldn't have gotten Morgan very far."
-Walton continues

"Bill Walton wasn't much of a basketball player. Sure, he averaged 30 points a game, but his team was scoring 100. That means 70% of the time, Bill Walton didn't score a basket."

ha, classic!

Joe Morgan is an idiot. Does he expect hitters to only make 6 out of 10 outs?

The game of baseball is the only sport designed to have the offensive player fail. And because of this challenge, you are considered great by succeeding 30% of the time.

No other sport allows that.

Shoot 30% from the field and you wont be in a basketball uniform.

Save 30% of shots on goal and you wont be on a soccer field or ice rink.

Complete 30% of your passes and you'll have a seat next to Ryan Leaf.

Hit 30% of the time and you're a Hall of Famer.

Joe Morgan needs to think before he speaks.

Not that hard to know what I meant by that.

Would you rather I break it down to percentages?

Or how about I break in all the little extras?

Don't see how that would work now that people believe certain numbers don't even promise a HOF vote anymore.

I don't even need to explain what I meant by what I said.

Not that hard to figure out.
