Had to share this here, even though it's technically an OOTP GO story. My grandson, who is 6 years old, noticed the GO app on my iPad and asked about it. I showed him the game, and he was hooked. This must be genetic. He managed a game with the Phillies (my default team), and then wanted to mange the Cubs. The Cubs?! Apparently masochism runs in the family as well.
So, we're working on the lineup, and Leo is learning about ratings, and notices Nick Madrigal's 77 Contact rating. I explain how that is good, green is good, blue is better. Then he asks about the red HR Power rating of 11. I explain how this guy is unlikely to hit home runs. But Leo likes the speed and good fielding rating, so Madrigal plays. Of course he hits a home run. Thus proving that Grandad knows nothing about the game. Leo is delighted. [Grandad fuming that this is not supposed to be like some arcade game, where anybody can do anything....] The Cubs go on to defeat the Dodgers at Wrigley, 4-3. Leo manages his bullpen like a pro, even visiting the mound to give relievers more time to warm up. He even does pinch hitters; although I didn't (yet) try to explain a double-switch. He asks who is managing the other team. I say Markus. JK. I explain AI. He understands. Next time we will go into the role of the GM, drafting, trades, minor league system, free agents. He's great with numbers, and lineups are a perfect way to test his reading skills. The play narrative is tough to follow, so it's great he can watch the animation. I think he is hooked.

Oddly appropriate to post this and then see the message from Markus, the next day. It does seem to suggest a continuity that is reassuring.

What a wonderful story! Leo’s natural curiosity and talent for managing the Cubs highlight his growing love for baseball and strategy games. Teaching him through OOTP GO perfectly combines learning and bonding. That Madrigal home run? Pure magic. Even if Grandad gets frustrated, moments like these create lifelong memories. For students!
