NCAA Tourney
Some things about the bracket for me.
.......Auburn getting a #9 seed, but playing in Birmingham. Totally unfair for #8 Iowa & a potential match for the #1 seed Houston. Makes little to no sense at all. Was the committee trying to "punish" the Cougars before the Final 4 in Houston? .....Pitt in the play in game. 1 game short of sharing the ACC regular season title. Little respect for the ACC..... .....Clemson also finished 1 game short of a share. Didn't even make the field.......... ....Creightoin vs NCSt makes me want to pull for an earthquake..... .....A potential Texas vs TxA&M 2nd round matchup had no bearing on the committee's seeding choices <sarcasm>.............. .......A&M & dook seeded too low. Tennessee & Xavier seeded too high...... .......Potential NIT.....UNC, OKSt, Clemson, Wisconsin, Michigan, Cincy, Rutgers, Oregon. Looks more like a traditional NCAA field. So many disappointing seasons there.,

Well UNC is turning down the NIT invite. Not just a disappointing team. An embarrassing team.

I think we could see some lower seeds make the final four this year.

100% agree with this! And with Iowa playing a bit uninspired since the Michigan state game. Iowa is done before they even get there

You know it's a weird season when the women's #1 seeds are more controversial than the men's

UNC disappointed me so bad I didn't even do a bracket this year. I used to do Lunardi's stuff back in HS before anyone ever invented the word "Bracketology". Shame.

Don't nobody choke in March like the Arizona Wildcats.

The guys I play cards with every tuesday morning are HUGE sports bettors.
For the NCAA tournament, throw in $20, and get a team. You get that team, and the team they play against in the first round. So...32 x 20 = $640. Sweet 16 pays, and the payout gets bigger as you win. Final gets $200. So. I picked Virginia. Good effing God. Gone. Well..I DO have Furman now. |

For those who missed this nuance, AAAAAAGHizonAAAAAGH is now the first team to be on the wrong end of a 15 v 2 upset…twice.
(Steve Nash and the Santa Clara Broncos got the Mildcats, back in the day, you might recall.) Also, these are the last six years for your Virginia Cavaliers: 2018: #1 overall, upset by #16 Maryland-Baltimore County (go Retrievers!) 2019: #1 seed (#2 overall), win championship 2020: no tournament 2021: #4 seed, upset by #13 Ohio U. (go, Bobcats!) 2022: did not reach NCAA tournament 2023: #4 seed, upset by #13 Furman (go, Purple Paladins!) The very definition of "go big…or go home. Immediately." |

Purdue is another " 'zona". If you think about advancing them far in your bracket, purdon't.

I don't pay a lot of attention to college hoops until tournament time. So, given that, it's a mystery to me how Purdue amassed a 29-5 regular season record. They just looked awful down the stretch.
Gene Sterratore, btw, is a clown. He basically just agrees with whatever call is made on the court, or finds an excuse for it if the call is obviously wrong. |

I am far from a college basketball expert. But I think we will see more and more of this.
Many of the top HS prospects just ignore NCAA basketball and go another route now. Then you have transfers where the players don’t have to sit a year anymore. Finallly you have one and done which has been in place for a long time now. I think we will see even more chaos in the coming years and quality of play continue to decline. |

The NBA is talking about allowing HS draftees to enter again once they get the next CBA hammered out…

Hmm. I don’t watch college at all so maybe it’s different but in the pros it’s been more about athleticism than ever. It’s definitely not about size anymore, not the way it used to be, and I could totally see that meaning that the top teams no longer have some 7 footer whose only job it is to make penetrators’ jobs miserable and so therefore a motivated smaller college team could completely upset someone. But, like, I think the whole point of why you no longer see those guys in the NBA any longer is precisely because athleticism is so much more important. Everyone has to shoot now (which I guess isn’t exactly athleticism but it’s close) and pretty much everyone has to be able to dribble or play classic outside defense and usually both.
Again, I’m completely ignorant about college until those guys go pro so I’ll freely admit my potential wrongness here.

But as far as the NBA is concerned the athleticism has changed. It was a game emphasizing size, vertical game. It is now a speed shooter's game.
