Moving On (OOTP 24)

I'm going to get OOTP 24. The people who work for this company are dedicated professionals and they should be rewarded for the hard work and time they put into making this game the best sports simulation game out there.

I get why many people are frustrated. And I think we have made our points. So I'm not going to discuss it anymore. I'm just looking forward to the new MLB season and what OOTP 24 has in store for us. Going to listen to the OOTP now podcast in a few minutes.

I'll buy it when it's half off like last year.

Yes, honestly I've got enough entertainment value out of '22 alone to pay for the next five years of versions. I won't feel the same way about every release, but it's easy to justify. This is a great product.

I managed to sink around 1300 hours into OOTP 23, between playing, modding, & testing stuff. It's well worth the price as that is an absurd dollar to entertainment hour ratio, but I have mixed feelings about giving them my money after learning they were using real world leagues without permission. That's some shady stuff. The loss of those leagues is a massive blow to how I choose to play as well.

Between that stuff & the emphasis on Perfect Team, I no longer have all positive opinions about the company. I'm still buying 24, but I'm no longer certain I'll be a customer past that, like I've been every other year. Only time will tell. Hoping for a quality product in 24 & a positive trajectory moving forward as well, so I don't have to make that choice later.

Without going back into that whole song and dance regarding the league that shall not be named, OOTP using foreign leagues in the past without proper licensing isn't anymore shady than what a lot of other spots games are doing. The Frontier league is probably not looking to pick a fight when a small simulation game uses they rosters and team names, but this cannot be said about every other league.

Dropping every league that they don't have a license to (for now) is sad, but I'd bet donuts to dollars that that directive comes from their lawyers and that we can expect proper licensing of some more leagues in OOTP25 and beyond.

Do we really know that they were using an unlicensed product, or could the license have expired? And they could not come to an agreement on a new one. I do not like this accusation that OOTP did something nefarious without proof. It seems someone on some thread said this and now it gets treated like the gospel.
If this was posted by someone from the OOTP team, then I stand corrected.

From the things I have read it sounds like Konami has an exclusive license with the ***. If that is the case, it is unlikely they could purchase a license unless the Konami license expired and was not renewed. I personally, doubt OOTP did anything purposely wrong when they had the league in the game. I did sometimes include the league we can't mention, in my saves and will miss it, but will move on. I have already purchased 24. I do hope they could license some leagues they are removing. I especially will also miss the Mexican League, which I assume will be gone.

Regardless of whether OOTPD knew of the Konami license itself or the terms thereof, they surely knew that they did NOT have a license for (un)said league. (Speaking of which, why does everyone avoid referring to the Japanese league by name? It is not necessary, so are people confused or just electively engaging in a sophomoric protest against a league and licensed partner that both acted within their rights?)

They’ve also been able to use stats for unlicensed leagues because numbers can’t be trademarked under US or I guess most European laws. Apparently Japanese law is different, Konami or whoever is very litigious (they’ve banned SI from having any references to Japanese soccer players even in personal, non-published scouting reports as a reference, and also kept them from using real players on the Japanese World Cup teams), and that wasn’t well defined until recently.

I would expect every single league, unlicensed or otherwise, to remain the same with OOTP because other countries don’t have insane copyright laws. Even the Mexican League, which will probably be around as a mod somewhere, will very likely not require the game to relocate it to Istanbul because their copyright laws are similar to ours.

I might be buying OOTP24 but I have discovered the Action PC Sports series this year and oh boy..that's one heck of a sports sim series that I somehow never stumbled upon before. I have all the 4 major sports iterations now and although they are all season-replay based and there isn't any 'career mode' I find the results and stats for the APC Baseball game really good and satisfying.

This is not to say I won't be buying OOTP24, but not for historical play anymore, only for present day and into the future career/franchise play with one of the modern ballclubs. Which in my case will probably mean I'll buy it when it's half price off mid-season.

LOL, how much of that time was actually spent advancing a season? I'm not into spending countless hours tinkering, modding and testing.

I bought OOTP 19, OOTP 21 and OOTP 23, and I will be buying OOTP 25.

Considering how much time investment it takes to play the game, I suspect it's not uncommon for people to upgrade every other year.

I am a little late to the party (seems to be more the case as I get older ) and just finding out about the loss of Puro Yakyū is a big one for me since I actively follow that league. My usual pattern is to play as the Yomiuri Giants for a month since I don't really care about trades or anything and just play with what is given. Then, after the OOTP team has had a chance to fix any opening day issues and update the rosters, I start my long-term MLB save. I don't know most of the players in KBO but that might need to be my go to for me to keep doing what I have done for years.

Either way, I already bought 24 and can't see myself moving on from OOTP over this issue but I definitely can respect those that do. I also can definitely rant about all that Konami has done wrong with the Japanese licenses in both baseball and soccer but it is what it is.
