My First OOTP: go with 14 or 15??
Hello everybody, been a lurker on the boards off and on for a couple years. I almost switched from BMogul to OOTP previously, but I'm finally going to make the plunge this year.
Here's my little dilemma...I'm dying to play this game NOW!! I see two options.... 1). Buy the OOTP 14 @ 50% off so I can start playing now.... OR 2). Buy ootp 15 pre-order and start playing in 2 months(April), meanwhile messing around on OOTP 9(free version) for those 2 months while waiting! ![]() It feels like such a waste to buy them both when 15 comes out so soon, but at the same time...when your really anxious for something that's a long time!! Do you guys think this will be a giant enough improvement from one game to the next where I'll miss out by going with OOTP 14? Look forward to seeing you guys around on the site Thanks!

There's a free game. Ver 8 or something like that. Not sure exactly where but it's on this site somewhere and all you need to do is search for it. You'll get your taste of ootp until ver 15 comes out.

I would say go with the newest version. paying half price is still quite expensive so I say just pay the extra bit to get the latest version. Then once OOTP16 comes out you might be happy sticking with 15 until 16 goes on sale.

From what I've seen of the previews (which admittedly isn't much yet), OOTP15 looks to be far and away the best in the series so far. If you're only going to buy one or the other, I'd say go for 15.

I got 14 a month ago. Only $20, and I'll probably get 15 when (if) it goes on sale. But then, if you only have $40 available, wait until 15.

Personally, I'd wait for OOTP 15. In the meantime, naaga brings up a good point in that OOTP 8 is available for free, which you can mess about with while you wait:

Buy 14, it's only 20 bucks. It'll probably be the best 20 bucks you've ever spent in your life.
You'll have plenty of time to learn the ins and outs of the game (mainly the interface, especially for a new user). 15 will be loaded with bugs that'll need patching and tweaks to new features and such. By the All-Star break 15 should be much more polished and on sale. If you don't have 20 bucks see if you can find an older version like another user suggested just to get started. |

I would buy 14... but warning, you may end up buying 15 because you wanna see what all the improvements are.
But 14 definitely. 14 is complete, if you went to 15 first the game will be slightly buggy when first released before the patches and it probably won't be a great first ootp experience or at least not as great as it could be. just my opinion of course. |

You won't go wrong either way. But if you're dying to play now, get 14! I'm looking forward to 15, but I don't think 14 is suddenly going to feel obsolete the day 15 comes out. It's outstanding in its own right, and as others have said, it has already been patched up. Still many, many of hours of enjoyment left in 14, if you ask me.

Get 14...start a career...get immersed, then import it into OOTP 15. You have to realize, it might be a little while before 15 is properly patched anyway. Markus is very good about patching, but the reality is, every new release will have a few issues to start. |

Welcome!
I'd say go with 14. OOTP is a very complex game, it's going to take you awhile to figure everything out. OOTP 8/9 are...okay, but the game has improved so much since then. It runs smoother on your computer, and there are alot more options. Once you're comfortable with 14 and perhaps have a career you care about, then you can make a better decision when you're ready to upgrade to 15. |

download and play the 14 demo first. If you're anything like most of us, you'll end up buying both versions after that.

Pre-order 15 and stick with the free game for now. The time will fly by very quickly and you'll be happy you went to 15 when it drops.

Do you not know anybody else who is interested in OOTP? You could split the cost of 14 if money is short.

We need a pre-purchase deal for OOTP 15. Buy now and get OOTP 14 for $9.99 to hold you over until April. Color me in for that deal.

Late in the year for the old version should be thrown in as free for people purchasing the new one instead of that early purchase discount, give them the choice imo. Would attract more potential buyers.

My experience with OOTP is generally:
- New version comes out and works OK but is usually buggy. - Bugs get worked out, usually by early summer. - Some later bugs get hammered out and all the new features end up working well by the time the pennant races are getting started. I know of several people who will not download the new version of the game until July-ish because of that. Nothing against the game; I think it's just part of having to develop an indie title like this every single year with the same basic deadline. That being said, I would recommend buying XIV for two reasons: 1. It's out right now and you don't have to wait for it. 2. It's stable and works well. 3. Maybe you'll decide to drop another $40 in July on the new version anyway. I think that from a pure future-sales standpoint, the community is probably behind you buying XIV as well, as it really does represent the best the game has to offer at the moment, and that will probably continue to be the case through at least May. Years in which big new stuff is added usually mean this is even more the case, as Markus sometimes can't help but make the first couple months a sort-of public beta to find and work out the kinks. I think this is going to be one of those years, what with the 3D graphics engine and all.
