Lousy lousy average with runners in scoring position
Is anyone else having this problem. My team is absolutely horrible with getting runners home from second or third base. Strike-outs, pop-ups and double-plays plague me.
I am averaging LOB at 11.2 a game. I am getting pretty tired of losing games with 13 hits but 1 run. Any suggestions? I've shuffled and shuffled the line-up until the players feel like a deck of cards.... It's gotten not fun so I may start a new league and see if the problem persists with a new team. It makes me a little sad tho since I've played quite a while with this team, over 2+ seasons over 6 or 7 weeks. I play out every game, btw. Tom

Bumping this because I almost through my ipod off the train after loading the bases with no one out in a 13-inning game, down 1-run.
strike out, pop-up, strike out. another loss. 15 hits, 2 runs.... argh. I know, I know these things happen in real life, but with such frequency? I wouldn't mind knowing my team's (or at least the player's) avg with runners in scoring position. Anyone know where this is stored? Tom

I haven't really noticed this too much. Yeah, I get a game or two where I want to pull my hair out, but overall I have yet to see a trend. I will keep an eye out for it though.

Well, let's assume it's my team's fault for now. Anyone want to help me pick a lineup? I wanted to add the player's avg with runners in scoring position, but I can't find it, tho sometimes I will be told when playing out a game (and it's always AWFUL)
Here's my starting team. I'm leaving out names so as not to be influenced by anything other than numbers: (scale is 1-10) C: contact 8 power 7 gap 7 eye 7 avoid k 6 ab 264 avg .269 hr 10 obp .353 slg .395 (avg w runners in scoring is awful. When I ask the computer to suggest a line-up, it wants this guy hitting 3rd. He was hitting <.250 for most of the year, but it looks like he heated up a bit. Whether I'm very aggressive on the bases, or I play station-to-station ball, they leave TONS of guys on base. At least as far as iOOTP goes, I'm really starting to lean towards the idea that this game is much more suited to simulating everything and just working front office magic. The game-by-game, play-by-play, managing aspect is just unrealistic as all get-out. Side note: Why is there a balk called in almost every game? Why does Johnny Bench have 1-2 passed balls in almost every game? I love this game overall, but the managing the game part is brutal. |

I'm really not seeing any of these issues in play-by-play. Despite the occasional late-inning breakdown, performance seems pretty normalized after 2-3 seasons.

With that lineup and skill ratings, I think you should be scoring some runs. I am playing the Giants now in 1980. That timeframe is a pitchers timeframe and all the hitting is weak with negative modifiers applied. You might want to check under game setup, league setup, strategy to see if the player creation modifiers are under 1. It helps produce a low scoring period.
I have resorted to a lot of steals, hit and run and bunts to generate runs when I have the right players batting. And I do leave a lot of base runners on base. Although I am also learning just how sophisticated the game is. Steals, hit and runs and bunts can backfire pretty badly without the right circumstances, the right baserunners, batters, pitchers and catchers. Sometimes it is best just to let the batter hit and hope. |

I haven't seen this--I do have frustrating games where it seems like my players hit into a lot of double-plays (2 or 3), but for the most part the frequency of the double-plays or the total number of runners LOB seems about right...
I do try to mix it up a bit if I sense my team is getting into a rut, ie, hitting into dp's fairly routinely. I'll try the hit and run, or bunt, or send a player to attempt a steal, just to break whatever negative pattern my team seems to have fallen into. |
