Manager of the Year
I dont ever remember seeing this in v9.
How does this work? I dont see anyway to vote, nor results? It just shows up as a scheduled date every year. |

I was wondering about this too. As you said, there's no manual voting for MOTY (which is strange, considering the manual voting is--I believe--new to this version, so why couldn't it have been included?) Also, there isn't an option to give it a name on the League Setup screen, like there is for other major awards. (Not that this matters to me, although when I didn't see it there when I was setting up my league, I wondered if the MOTY feature hadn't made it into the final release.)
However, it does finally show up at the very end of the season as a couple of news stories. There's even a "Sim until..." option that only appears after the playoffs to sim until Managers of the Year are announced. But even then, you have to sim yet another day to get them to show up on the News list. I'm glad MOTY is finally in the game, but it really needs to be cleaned up in the next version, IMO. |

I'm not sure how it works but I don't like for my team to win it. See if I just play the role of the GM and my team wins it then I get the reward not my manager.

I'm guessing it goes to the two World Series team managers. I've made the World Series eight times since 1903, and I've received it those eight times, so has the other guy.

manager of the year seems a bit flawed
Every single season in my league, the managers of the year were the managers of the world series teams. This seems unrealistic, since a manager who leads a team from last to first likely won't get consideration if his team doesnt make the WS

That's not what I had hoped would happen. Not that I'm sure you could ever really come up with a good algorithm for manager of the year, but I'd like to think that a good amount of the team it would go to the team that did the most with the least or overperformed by the most. That shouldn't preclude a championship winning manager from winning it, but 16 out of 16 times?

I hope that this isn't too off topic, but I have thought for a couple of versions now that it would be nice if OOTP made more of a distinction in the game between being the manager of a major league team and being the GM of that team. I would love if a team could hire you as either the manager or the GM, instead of immediately having access to both duties when you are hired.

![]() Yeah, that's extremely disappointing. Even if the game isn't using a very sophisticated algorithm to determine MOTY, it could surely come up with something more advanced than just giving it to the 2 WS managers! How difficult would it be to simply give it to the 2 team's managers with the biggest improvement in games won from one year to the next? At least that would be more realistic. And of course, this is the one award that can't be manually voted on, or even edited!

In my ideal setup, each team would have an Owner, a President, a General Manager, a Field Manager, and the various coaches and so forth. The Owner would basically control the overall budget. Depending on his profile, he could be hands-on or hands-off and fiscally liberal or fiscally conservative. The President would only be in charge of Front Office decisions, like ticket prices, ballpark improvements and media/merchandising contracts. The GM would control all off-field player moves (trades, free agency, promotions/demotions, etc.) and be in charge of the field manager and coaches. Finally, the Field Manager would only be in charge of what goes on on the field, like setting lineups and rotation, and managing games. When you took over a team, you would have the option of taking any combination of these jobs you wanted. (In other words, you could choose to be the GM and the Field Manager, or just one or the other, or could serve as President, or Owner, too.) But whichever job(s) you took, you'd be at the mercy of the others. So if you were just the Field Manager, for example, you'd have to answer to the Owner and GM, who would be controlled by the computer and could fire you at their discretion. Anyway, that's just a plug for my idea. |

Ok so I just finished a season with the new patch and I won the manager of the year. Thing is I wasn't in the world series. So was something changed about this?

I would imagine it's tied to the points somehow. I know that I was piloting my 1870s era club and I got more points (about 26?) when I finished second-to-last when my owner's expectation was "better than .500" and only 8 points when I was a bit under .500 and my owner's expectation was "win it all".
Needless to say, I didn't win the manager of the year either time. In fact, I was fired, and wouldn't you know, was jobless just during the stock market crash of 1873! Where's the compassion? Assuming it goes off the points, if this were done more true-to-life, it would take the points from the end of the regular season, not from the end of the postseason. Technically most regular season awards are voted on before (or supposed to be voted without regard to) the playoffs. Again, assuming it goes off points, it may be that whatever bonus points you get from winning/making the championship series makes it difficult to win the MOTY without winning/making it to the championship. So it may not be that it awards it to those clubs de facto, but that the extra points make it seem that way. Last edited by BMW; 06-19-2009 at 06:07 PM. |

It may be a little off-topic, but in a fictional league, I win MOTY every year for one simple reason...the AI has no managers anymore. How can I fix this/get some competition for that award?

That would explain why - any managers created that were assigned to teams at the beginning would have been fired or have their contracts run out within 4-5 years. Then you're the only manager! |
