I think the most impressive part is that he's 8-0 with a 1.22 ERA on the road, so his stats aren't an illusion created by playing in the modern Astrodome.

I don't think San Diego's stadium is quite on the level of the Astrodome, but just because a guy is lights-out on the road doesn't mean his stats aren't affected by his home park, or more to the point it doesn't mean that they aren't less valuable because of their context.

That being said, he's still #1 in the NL in ERA+ by a pretty comfortable margin, so yeah, in conclusion he roxxors.

A run factor of .79 is pretty damn Astrodome-esque, but in any case, his badassness is definitely not a result of his home park.

He's the best pitcher in MLB this year.

Peavy/Young/Maddux/Germano is easily the best 1-4 rotation in baseball.

Best starting pitching MLB has seen since Oswalt/Clemens/Pettitte formed the best top three in MLB history two years back.

Much like the 2005 Astros, I would not want to face the Padres in the postseason.

Were they really better than Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz between '94 - '96? I can not remember which was thier best year collectively off the top of my head.

I can think of one other 2005 rotation that I'd like to face even less.

Clemens/Oswalt/Pettitte were all in the top five of all pitchers in MLB in 2005. The Braves rotation of that period is probably the best in ML history over an extended period, but for a single season the Houston trio takes the crown. All three of those guys were in the top five of all starting pitchers in MLB that year.

Edit: VORP Totals for the Houston three below for 2005.
Code:
1. Clemens 80.2
2. Pettitte 72.1
3. Oswalt 65.1
Total 217.4
The Braves totals for 1996 are the highest of the three years mentioned, '94 was a strike year and Maddux was the only member of the trio who had a big year. It's pretty close to Houston 2005.
Code:
1. Maddux 74.5
2. Smoltz 72.9
3. Glavine 62.5
Total 209.9

The Braves trio pitched more innings to pile up the VORP, so the Houston trio would probably look even better with rate stats.

Wouldn't you need Julio Santana to make it four?

Hmmm......let's have a look. The trio's DERA (defense adjusted ERA) numbers for the respective seasons below.
Code:
Clemens 2.49
Pettitte 2.93
Oswalt 3.38

Maddux 3.05
Smoltz 3.19
Glavine 3.35

Two more BB Prospectus stats for comparison......WARP (Wins Above Replacement Player) and SNLVAR (Wins above replacement level adjusted for run support and the quality of the opposing hitters).
Code:
          WARP
Clemens 10.4
Pettitte 9.4
Oswalt 9.5
Total 29.3

Maddux 10.3
Smoltz 10.8
Glavine 9.3
Total 30.4
Code:
         SNLVAR
Clemens 9.4
Pettitte 8.6
Oswalt 7.7
Total 25.7

Maddux 8.3
Smoltz 8.3
Glavine 7.9
Total 24.5

I'd still go with the Houston trio, but the gap remains small.

8 ER in 4 IP?

Jake Peavy sucks on 3 days rest

I'm guessing Peavy's not clamoring for a return to the four man rotation.

And, from the white-out, I see we were on the same track.
