Setting minimum VORP
I don't understand how VORP is calculated well enough to know if I need to change the minimum value for automatic HOF induction.
I'm running a league that starts out with a scant 84 games. Based on this, getting 3,000 hits in a career would certainly be an achievement, so I've modified the HOF minimums downward to reflect the lighter schedule. Is VORP a relative factor (similar to BA or ERA) or a fixed factors (similar to hits or wins)? In other words, do I also need to adjust minimum VORP downward? Thx, cbbl |

Its similar to hits or wins. The more common term is "counting stat". VORP is a cumulative stat measured in Runs. The more playing time you get, the higher (or lower) your VORP can go.
So with a lighter schedule, yes, you would want to reduce the career VORP requirements for HoF induction. - Kai

It's also roughly similar to homeruns, at least in 2000s terms. A 30 VORP season is a very strong season that will probably land you on an All-Star team. 50 VORP might get you an MVP. 70+ VORP seasons measure among the all-time greats.
On the other hand, you can't get less than zero homeruns, not even if you're Ozzie Smith, so you can't think of it *exactly* like homers. Personally, what I do with the HOF numbers is I set them really, really high, as in "no matter what else a player does, even if he's a total lout and hits .200 with 10 walks a season, if he hits X amount of homers he's still in my Hall". For that reason I tend to actually adjust the numbers upwards, even if I'm playing in a lower offensive era, because if a player doesn't hit the numbers but I'm still convinced he belongs in the Hall, I'll just manually add him. It's your game, you can be as arbitrary as you want to be and nobody will be shouting at you to open the gates a little wider.

You probably need to take that scale up some. 7 batters in 2006 were over 70.
