Pinella to the Cubs

ESPN radio is reporting it.

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Lou Piniella apparently will take his fiery brand of managing to "the Windy City."

Chicago radio station ESPN 1000 reported Monday that the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a three-year deal with Piniella.

Financial terms have not been finalized, but the radio station is reporting that Piniella will receive approximately $3 million annually. The Cubs officially will announce the hiring of Piniella on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.

Piniella, 63, faces a difficult task in turning around a Cubs franchise which posted a 66-96 record in 2006 and has reached the postseason just twice in the last 17 years.

The subject of numerous recent rumors, Piniella owns a career record of 1,519-1,420 in 19 seasons with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Seattle Mariners, the Cincinnati Reds and the New York York Yankees. He guided the Reds to a World Series championship in 1990 and twice was named American League Manager of the Year while with the Mariners.

On Friday, Piniella took himself out of the running for the San Francisco Giants' opening. He has also spoken to the Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers, although he said the Washington job is not an ideal fit.

Piniella, 63, has been working in television since parting ways with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after the 2005 season following three difficult years as manager.

The Cubs chose not to bring back manager Dusty Baker when his contract expired.

Ha Ha!

[/that kid from the Simpsons]

You could have had Girardi and you take Piniella instead?? That just proves you deserved Baker.

I thought Pinella only wanted to manage a contender?

Am I the only one that thinks the Cubs aren't going anywhere for the next 3 years?

I've got one, but all I have to talk about are selling starting-time rights and players getting in trouble for shootings in the Dominican Republic.

This is no surprise. He was interviewing for the job on air during the whole AL series. I can't count how many times he said something like, "In the National League this is how you do things..." It drove me nuts.

This should be entertaining to watch. Can't wait to count how many times he will blow up because of the losing. His mental makeup makes him a great manager for a good team that will compete. but come on, that's not the cubs. Aram is most likely walking away and the flubs will most likely replace him with some Jacque Jones ish player. and they will still consider Mark Prior to be the ace of their staff and he will make somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-7 starts before finishing the season on the DL. then I love how the news is already out that Lou wants them to go get Arod. LOL first of all, who do the flubbies have that is worth Arod? umm that would probably be Dlee and Z. most of their prospects are horribly over rated. Felix Pie anyone? and secondly, Arod would have to be on Michael Irvin's crack to agree to go to the flubs. Have fun Lou, Hendry will saddle you with crappy players, horrible contracts and you'll be in the looney bin by August

He wants ARod. I wouldn't mind seeing that.

What would they possibly use to get him? The cubs aren't exactly loaded with top prospects. and their major league roster sucks.

Awesome. That means he'll be unable to work in the broadcast booth. Well, until October, anyway.

Piniella in Chicago = Torre in New York at least through April 2007. Beyond that, however, is highly debatable.
