career ending injuries

This has probably been discussed before, and while it's not a huge deal, one thing that has always bothered me is the way ootp handles career ending injuries. Yes, I know they are part of the game and do occur in real life. but more times then not, career ending injuries are not known for some time after the actual injury. So how about, along with career ending injuries, adding a category for serious injuries with status: "return unknown".

To take this even deeper. There could be trainers, or a training staff, which get hired and fired just like the coaches/scouts. The higher rated/skilled your training staff is, the higher the chance a player has of returning at some point. Yes, one or two years down the line the players status could still change to "career over". But it would also be great to see a player return and do well after recovering, one, two, or even three years down the road.

P.S. yes this post come just minutes after losing my ace stater (a 26 year old, 5 star pitcher, who just came off a 21 win season) to a career ending injury, just 4 weeks before the playoffs. But even in my current distraught state, I think it's still a good idea

We will miss you Lorenzo Acuña ;' (

It sounds like a good idea.

I got it in my mind to start running another historical replay last night, and Ty Cobb got felled by a career-ender in 1913.

I like the idea a lot. Sometimes you see a guy like Dave Dravecky and you know right away he's done. More commonly though, especially with pitchers, it seems that they'll get repetitive problems with an elbow/shoulder and over time it will make them unable to pitch anymore. Charles Nagy comes to mind.

It would be nice if there was coding somewhere to make it more likely for guys to have repeat arm injuries. Chronic sholder problems or what have you.

I like this idea as well. What is a career ender for one player is sometimes not for another. A 36-year old pitcher who gets injured for a full season is much more likely to call it quits rather than trying a comeback than a 25-year old with the same injury. With today's technology, there are a lot fewer true career ending injuries than there used to be. This could even be coded by era I suppose where modern technology could prevent some career ending injuries.

To add to that, it would be interesting to have a player get seriously injured towards the end of a season and have to wonder if he'll be playing the following year for salary purposes. Then the player could email you to let you know if he's planning to make a comeback or not.

That's a good idea.

Usually, I'll just "simulate" a career ender coming back into the game. Usually with diminished statistics or I'll have him in the minors for a year or two, to see if he can make a comeback. But yeah, just to have the player out and done seems a bit rash. Variation would be good.
