Question Too Many Leagues ? ? ?

This is not a statement -- just a question.
With the seemingly endless plethora of existing leagues that are looking for teams, new leagues starting up, newer leagues looking to fill vacancies....
are there too many leagues ?
or is it too many teams in leagues - which causes a vacuum when an owner leaves ?

there seems to be almost every kind ofleague out there - something that would appeal to any and every kind of owner, maybe it's the urge to run our own leagues with a defined visionof what we are seeking as opposed to being in someone elses dream...

not witch slapping anyone or any league - it just sems to this mis-informed misogynist that there is a question that begs to be answered.

Well, consider this:

The established leagues have been around, and rarely show signs of needing any owners. Where else do new guys have to turn?

People will always start leagues. When I started the ABL, people said that there were too many leagues. It all depends on the resources the commish of a new league has at their disposal. I've never had to recruit on these forums, due to the amount of people I know from other leagues.

There are a lot of leagues, and it'll just keep growing. It's just how people handle their own leagues, and how dedicated they are, that's the issue.

Wow, I rambled.

Well I guess I could be "accused" of that, as I started up my league in the past week. However, the owners we have in our league have been in many other leagues (LivnLegend, nymetsgeek, WireLouie), yet they are extremely active, and very excited about the foundation we have built. I don't think it's fair to say "ok guys, no more league should be made". Not everyone was around these boards when the original OOTPs came out. If you start a league, and are able to fill it and run it successfully then you know that there aren't "too many leagues".

Like Akrobat, I could be accused of the same offense. But like Akrobat, the new league I was a part of starting this week filled quickly with high quality owners.

There will always be new leagues because there will always be a need for a certain type of league or there will be a perceived need for a certain type of league. Or perhaps you just feel more comfortable running the show or have a distinct vision of a whole new kind of league.

For example, I can't think of any leagues that are currently simming in the 1970s. I can think of at least two leagues that are still around that have finished simming the decade successfully though. So, there is always room at the table for one more. Do some leagues get squeezed by this? Sure. Is that always a bad thing? No.

I also think that the number of vacancies that are seen on the board are easily explainable. If you lose an owner, you need to fill the spot. If you don't happen to have a waiting list, you have to look for some new owners. I assume most leagues fill their openings quickly and that's why most posts slowly fade off the first page.

Most importantly, I think this is a question that will always be debated. Sometimes the question is posed because someone wonders why their league isn't being filled, other times, like here, the question comes out of legitimate interest. Some people will say there are too many leagues, some people will say there aren't enough leagues and some people will say the number of leagues is just right. It's really a matter of personal preference.

For the record - the only OOTP5 league I *haven't* won (yet - and that's b/c i took over an awful team just over a year ago) is Polyester Dreams, run by Joe Schmidt (whose Legendsport Leagues have proven excellent and creative - unless they fold), which is up to the 1972 draft. I believe there may be an opening or two in this league, which began with the 1969 MLB season and progressed as if expansion had never happened.

You can find it at www.legendsport.com if you're so inclined.

Leagues will be born and leagues will die. The number of people who play OOTP will probably only continue to grow unless the game stops being made or another game gets better then OOTP. The best leagues will survive for years and have very little difficulty in getting members. Other leagues might survive a year if they're lucky. I think that whether any individual league is successful will largely depend on how good the league is rather than how many other leagues there are. I'm currently working on the formation of a new league with a few high quality OOTP members and because of all the research and work that we're putting into it I fully expect that it will be a very successful league.

There will never really be too many leagues. It's the law of supply and demand. If people didn't want to be in any more leagues, then new leagues wouldn't be able to find any owners and they would fold quickly. It's true that some of them do, but solid leagues are forming all of the time, so there must still be some demand out there for more leagues.

Too many leagues? Probably.
Too many great leagues? Nope. It's not always easy to tell which leagues will turn out to be really good ones and which won't. I have a pretty good eye for those that will turn out well (and since it has been years since a league I joined has folded, I might be on to something!). Still, some of the good ones start by trial and error. Without a Commissioner taking a chance and some good team GM's committing some time and effort, good leagues would never get off the ground. You've got to start it to achieve it.

It's good to see that while we are worried about the number of leagues that at least people are not starting leagues with the expectation that it will be a crappy league and fail.
