when u trade a player, what do u look at ? what stats, etc....there so many players..any tips when trading.

Also, check to see if any of the players involved is Ross Gload. Trade for him AT ANY COST.

I only look at the Clutch rating when making trades and signing free agents. If a guy isn't clutch, I don't want him on my team. I've been doing well in one of my online leagues, recently acquiring Doug Glanville and Tony Womack.

In all seriousness (most of these guys are pulling your leg), I look at talent, ratings, stats, handedness, and career stage.

Young guys you need to look primarily at their talent, most important being their contact and then power, then walks and doubles (Hits, HRs, Walks, Doubles for batters and pitchers). (Note: this should change dramatically with OOTP6.) You also should see how far along ratings wise they are. If they're making good progress at attaining their potential (their ratings are rising to where their talents are), then they're less risky.

Veterans I first look at their stats. First their last year's OPS or ERA/IP, then their last few years. (I'd rather compare their XR27 or RC27, but OPS is quicker and close enough.) You also need to look at their ratings. Do their ratings show that their performance is likely to drop off? Do their ratings show that they should do better if they're on a better team?

As for handedness, righty pitchers and lefty batters have an advantage, but only between players who are otherwise pretty similar.

Because I primarily look at stats and talents as opposed to most people who I think look primarily at ratings, I feel that I can find some players who I feel are diamonds in the rough (or is it ruff? I'm not sure

).

Ha! I just took over the Guillotines a few sims ago and the Blacksox are an expansion team

But you are right, I am looking to acquire more 'clutchers'. I like that term.

On a serious note, if two players are comparably rated I will look at the clutch and consistency ratings. If one has better ratings in those two categories and similar ratings in the more important categories I would put him ahead by a slim margin.

It's also important to check out a player's injury rating. Anyone rated "prone" shoud be treated as though they have a big red flag on top of their head.

You always wanna look at the potential ratings if you are looking at a young player and if they are a veteran you are trading for then you want to look for the smaller things along with the ratings. I look at the clutch and how good of a leader he is as well as how good his ratings are.

Or you can trade all of the good players to your team and increase their ratings. Usually this works best with Atlanta or Seattle though. Mostly in online leagues.

It's really a personal preference you develop as you go along I think. For hitters I look at getting hits and walks first then things like speed or power. At certain positions like shortstop,second base and centerfield I consider defense very important, less important in the corner infield and outfield positions though. For pitchers I look at everything except strikeouts about equally, haviing good avoiding hits and walks ratings is essential,and at least above average ability to avoid doubles and homers.[I don't find strikeouts have too much inpact on overall performance in OOTP] Duration is less important to me since I've had good success with D and E duration starters

I also tend to have a big preference for young players who are allready well deeloped since they are much more of a "sure thing"

Trades are difficult to judge. The first thing I look at is what I'm giving up - will the trade actually make the team better, or am I just moving a problem around the diamond? After that, I try to see if there are any prospects or free agents that could solve the problem without a trade.

If I'm still looking to make a deal, I'd have to go by ratings (if they're available), then stats, then talent. Unless I'm trading for prospects, in which case I mainly look at talent and the player's age, then see if his ratings look about right for that stage of development.

One thing to remember is that it takes several seasons to properly evaluate a trade; what looks like a steal in year one can look quite different in year five (see: Smoltz, John).

I don't trade anymore. I roleplay that I'm a pirate and I just loot other teams for players if I need one.
