I still don't understand 'recalculate totals'
I've been playing OOTP since version 3. I've read about recalculate totals in past versions, and I just spent some time doing a search and reading several threads about 'recalculate totals'. Yet I still don't understand, and from the threads, it seems other people don't fully understand.
I'm playing a fictional league and want it to just evolve in its own way while not getting too far out of what I might consider the norm, and without doing all sorts of calculations with the totals, as some suggest. In past versions, it was often suggested to hit recalculate totals at the end of every season to help this process occur smoothly. So what does recalculate totals do in the current version? And how would it fit into a fictional league that is not seeking to mirror MLB historical accuracy through the years? Any help would be appreciated. Should I hit it or not, and what difference will it make? BTW, I'm incredibly impressed with OOTP5. I won't go into any gushy details, just incredibly impressed. |

It seems to do the same as in the previous versions, IMO.
It will alter the ERA totals up and down to give you an altered expectancy that will vary slightly from year to year. I'm not sure how the game handles how to decide if something in the totals will go up or down. My opinion is that it has a "base" for the totals and will go a certain distance from that, up or down... I like it...but sometimes I don't trust it... Some alternatives I have used, as korny as they may sound are: I flip a coin. Heads I add to a particulare total, tail I decrease. I take something like a 20-sided dice and roll...if the the coin was head and the number was 14..I will add 14 to the total...I want variance...but I want it to be slow and gradual..and for me sometimes with the recalculate button...It can spike too much for more liking at times.... I'm sure their are plenty of methods that people use....that is just one of mine... There are some great spreadsheets desingned by people to let you input a goal average...either for league, or in one spreadsheet, by team average. You may want to check those out. |

Hit the Recaulate Totals and you get the following (example): AB: 179,878 HITS: 47,652 D: 9003 T: 996 HR: 5004 BB: 17,991 HBP: 1687 SO: 35,565 If you proceed to play-out Season #2, then the totals used will be those generated above. The above totals are the total AB, HITS, D, etc. that occurred in your league for Season #2. As you can see, the results were all below the initial totals used for Season #1. If you use the recalulated totals from above, then one would expect that your totals and the end of Season #2 to be higher than what you started out with. Remember, if you lower the totals, this has the effect of generating more hits, doubles, etc. in general. Raising the totals has the opposite effect. If you want to keep certain totals around an acceptable range (for example, I don't like lot's of homeruns), then DON'T USE RECALCULATE TOTALS. I use it only to derive how far above/below my initial totals I want it to fluctuate for the upcoming year. Once I figure how how much I should add or subtract, I then make the appropriate modifications to my originally established totals and proceed to play out the next season. |

Thanks for the info. Since I'm playing a fictional league, and since the totals and averages are around what I want, then as I understand it I should NOT touch recalculate totals. I'll try it like that for a while.
