Tagging, or trying for an extra base
One thing that I have noticed, having now played an entire season, is that when the game asks if you want to send the runner, always say no! I have never had a successful extra base or tagging up and trying for an extra base. The game will almost always make a successful decision and only occasionally not ask when a runner gets thrown out. Therefore, if the game asks, say NO!

This has not been my experience; although the sample size is not large. Some guys make it with ease.
For example, with two outs, most runners (all but the slowest) should make it from first to third on a single to RF (unless Clemente or Callison is the RF). With less than two outs, runner not going, it's more of a risk. On a potential sac fly, I think you really have to look at the OF arm rating, the runner's speed, and how deep the ball has been hit. On that, do not rely on the graphics. You need to read into the narrative how deep the ball is. [If you ever download a new stadium, you have the option to match the possible hit ball locations to the field. That gives you an idea what possible outcomes the game will "see" on a fly ball.]. The other way to look at this is, if the AI does not ask, the runner always makes it. In other words, the AI only asks on the marginal plays. So, if you know that your runner probably makes it 75% of the time on the fielder catching and throwing, that ratio may only be 50% or 25% when you are prompted, whereas it is 100% when you are not asked.

Sometimes your guys get thrown out without even asking for permission.

I assign the base running decisions to the AI because I am the manager, not the 3rd base coach.

Now if a user wants to make the decisions on runner advancement, more power to 'em. The feature was added a long time ago due to user requests, with that in mind "it's your game, play it your way". But from the posts I read I have to say it doesn't sound fun. In my game I'd rather my base coach make the call, after all that is something he is paid to do, and then cuss him when he gets it wrong. Others milage will certainly vary. ![]()

I believe if you control the base running decisions (pregame options), you'll be presented (sometimes but not always) with the option to advance or not advance the base runner during the game.

In the pre game screen is the option of who you wish to put in control of baserunning. It's not broken down into specific situations as you've listed, however you have a choice as to who controls overall baserunning.

And I do use this option. And you are not guaranteed to be thrown out all the time as the OP is stating. If you go off of the text when the option is presented to you, and you factor in how deep the ball is, who the runner is and who is throwing the ball you are able to make smart (or at least justifiable decisions) in those situations. What I always say when it comes to this type of thing is you MUST go off the text and not off the visuals. The outfielder trying to throw your runner out could visually be on the warning track, but if the text says the ball is shallow you need to trust the text..... that can be misleading for a lot of people. |

And to the OP...
What you need to understand is anytime the decision to tag or not is a clear cut obvious decision, the computer handles it for you. If the runner can clearly tag up and advance the computer does it for you. At the same time, if the runner clearly cannot advance again the computer does it for you. So by default the only time you are presented with the decision is when it's a close-call type of decision. So right off the bat when it comes to the success vs. fail ratio on those decisions, you are inheriting a decent chance to fail because all of the super obvious decisions are not being presented to you. You are only being given the tough calls, so yes there is going to be some failure. But as someone who has controlled these decisions for years I can tell you for fact that you are not always thrown out and if you weigh the info presented to you in the text (not the visual) you can make solid decisions |

This drives me nuts, because there's simply no way Sparky Adnerson was telling Kirk Gibson to throw home or hit the cutoff man. Might as well have options asking if you want your player to have a steak for dinner or just a salad. |

Base running decisions in OOTP include tag-up plays, yes. Been that way for a long time, assuming you assign yourself control over base running decisions.

If you see a play where the timing is way off I would suggest posting it in the 3d movement thread here..
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=352814 If you haven't done this in the past the first post from Marcus gives instructions on how to go about posting your issue. Hope that helps. ![]()
