It basically died 4(?) years ago when Drew Magary left, created Defector, and took along every single writer with him. They'd been getting increasing calls by their bosses to shut up and stick to sports, which, if that's what you wanted, why exactly did you ever buy Deadspin in the first place (I mean, other than the "hey, this is a sports site I can buy on the cheap because Gawker Media was such a piece of trash, they made Hulk Hogan look like a victim")?

In fact, Magary commented on the final-ish death (pretty sure the next step is SI-style AI BS) on this week's Funbag:

Quote:
No, because it was inevitable. I feel lousy that another round of journalists got laid off, but I feel nothing for Deadspin itself anymore. That site died in 2019 as far as I’m concerned, and it was obvious that G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller had no interest in making the resuscitated Deadspin—or any of the old Gawker Media sites he snatched up—into anything interesting or relevant. Quite the contrary. He wanted those sites to be housecats: to just sit there and never make a fuss. That goes against the nature of both journalism and rude blogging, which meant that G/O Media’s implosion was always a foregone conclusion. I’m just happy I never had to meet that sack of **** face-to-face. He can eat a school bus.

I had of course heard of Deadspin but to me it was just another sports-reporting website name out there... So I just read the Wiki entry, and going by most of the stuff written under the "Reporting" section, I hafta say good riddance (although I'm sure there are some non-journo admin & tech folks who don't deserve their fate). Classless is the first word that comes to mind, but there are a few others...

Deadspin was the site which, way back in 2010, published the leaked financial statements of several MLB teams. The site apparently went downhill since then, increasingly become focused on politics instead of sports.

One of its more infamous recent works was the piece accusing a 9-year-old Chiefs fan of wearing blackface at an NFL game, and purposefully not showing photos which made it clear his face was painted in the red and black team colors. This "reporting" got the site sued by the kid's parents.

Some time ago new management came in and told staff to stop with the politics and stick to sports. The staff evidently just couldn't help itself and continued as before. The site kept losing money, and here we are.

Being both a sports and gaming fan, the kaspa mining calculator is a minefield changer. It is as if having a coach in crypto mining individually leading every movement to increase productivity maximally. The excitement of contention and strategy embedded in sports appear perfectly in cryptocurrency mining thanks to innovative tools.

It’s sad to see the direction it took after the editorial upheaval. The site’s commitment to telling the raw story of sports, beyond scores and statistics, resonated with many. Its decline is a loss for readers seeking that blend of humor, honesty, and critique. Hopefully, its spirit will live on through other platforms that dare to challenge the status quo in sports media. Deadspin’s legacy is a reminder of the power of independent voices in shaping narratives.
