Apparently Nike and MLB are going to limit teams to four jerseys going forward

Came across this on Wikipedia last night, then again for confirmation when searching for it.

Starting this season, a team is allowed a designated home, away, and two alternates. A fifth is allowed but the fifth must be a City Connect uniform.

This is why the Mariners have dropped their road greys in favor of the navy jersey and the Rangers dropped their red jersey. I believe the Braves eliminated their Friday reds.

Happy to see that.

I mean, at it's core, uniforms are there to identify players. If you have a new 'special edition' version every few days, it starts to get needlessly complex and confusing for fans. Plus, the uniform's prestige starts to drop if you practically never wear the same thing twice.

Call me a bore, but I like home-away-alt. three options. perfect. but this is a good step.

The max should be 3. When you turn on the tv you should instantly be able to recognize which team is which. It's getting to the point where you have to wait to be clued into it.

How many did some have before anyway? 6 or more? I honestly don't know. 5 just seems like a high max (I'm counting the CCs).

I can say that with some teams the home-away is all they need. I felt for the longest those teams should be the Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Reds, Tigers, and Cardinals. The Dodgers and Giants would be on that list but I like their alternate away jerseys (Dodgers away and the interlocking SF, which they discontinued after 2021), and in the Dodgers case, I prefer the "Dodgers" instead of "Los Angeles" on their road jerseys.

But I also agree with the notable "turn back the clock" events should be an exception to this rule because we all know they will have those damn specialties for Mother's/Father's Day, Memorial Day, and 4th of July.

The teams that are effected by this based off 2022? Royals (their Royal gold, they had six counting the CC), Astros, Mariners, Rangers, A's, Braves, Brewers, Nationals, Diamondbacks, and Padres. The Twins would be effected by this but they rebranded and only had four options. Some of these teams have a city connect jersey.

Teams that don't use the "extra" slot and have less than four jerseys (CC exempt): Dodgers, Angels,

Currently, 14 of 30 teams have City Connect. The only ones we know that are forthcoming are the Cardinals (in 2024).

I remember when putting the AIO together last year if you exempt the celebration and specialty jerseys, their were a few who had more than six.

I put together a list of teams with five or more. They had to be worn more than once, even if it is a once a year thing (Red Sox "BOSTON" Patriots Day) or more than one series (Players Weekend):

7: Diamondbacks

6: Braves, Twins, Padres, Giants, Rangers

5: White Sox, Astros, Royals, Brewers, Phillies, Pirates, Mariners, Rays, Nationals

I'm not a fan of Nike having any say in how many jerseys teams can have - especially when their jerseys are exempt. But I am fine with MLB doing so and agree that 4 is more than enough. 3 is my preferred max.

Thank goodness. I hate to be the old man screaming at the cloud but all of these jerseys have gone insane. In the NBA even more so. I saw Portland last night wearing green. The Bucks have a blue one. Charlotte has a black & gold one. Miami always comes up w/one that looks like it was colored by a 4 yr old. I wish, @ minimum, they would at least be made to stick to the team colors. I'm expecting them to come up w/a plaid jersey for somebody.

I had them listed internally with four but I believe they actually have six: home without pinstripes, home with pinstripes, road, black, blue Mets, and blue New York.

I would assume they would phase one of the blue jerseys out and most likely the same goes with one of the home whites.

But, Nike did this to the NBA as well. All 30 clubs have four combinations: one white and three colored jerseys.

Have they even worn their home all-whites in the last few years? I always found them ... "too white". Needs the pinstripes accents.

Also, none of this will make me rage less about, or buy one of, those City Connect craptasticals. And the Mets have yet to get smacked with those...

Having the same color but with different scripts (Mets / New York or Astros / Houston) is considered separate jerseys. Usually dictated as alternate X home and alternate X away. Using the city script for away games.

Just looked it up. Mets ran four jerseys last year: home, road, blue Mets, black. They last wore the blue New York in 2021, and their all whites in 2014.

Three versions should be the limit. And the sooner the Chitty Connect jerseys go the way of the Mercury Mets and Military Mondays (no, no, it's football that's fascism! We're pastoral, dammit!), the better.

And anything to stop our going the way of the EPL, where they have kits in more colors than Crayola has crayons. Nothing like watching the Chelsea Blues wearing "electric pistachio" or whatever.
