PBP Announcer

I cannot believe with all the technology out there, that they cannot input a realistic announcer, so many older games in the past had it, i see no reason why they game cannot have it??
please explain, ty

You mean all the pre recorded voiceovers that those games used? They would have to pay someone to do those voiceovers, then all people would complain about is how repetitive they are.

The best option would be to use some sort for text to speech, but those are far from perfect. What ideas do you have?

They are busy making PT, “realistic” 3D graphics and the cellphone app.

Create an announcer and make it an extra cost option. Then we'll know how many people really want it.

I specifically remember that the best of them, Ernie Harwell’s Broadcast Blast, was a thing you turned off about a hundred or so hours in. If you want text to speech software, it does exist, although it’s primarily useful for accessibility. You’re just not going to have an announcer, pre-recorded or otherwise, that’s going to have the highs and lows of a real life person, let alone engage in the sort of banter and stuff that makes a real baseball game a thing to want to listen to. For that last part, maybe AI will change that in a few years although that’s a whole new can of worms,

The whinging about PT in this context is, frankly, risible. Yeah, man, the sellout to PT is totes why they aren’t pursuing a feature that’s always been a little crap in AAA games.

Pay the estate and create a digital replica of Curt Gowdy's voice.

I would use PBP voice, if they eliminate everything inside parentheses.

I for one would welcome a PBP announcer so I could keep my eyes on the action unfolding on the field instead of bouncing back and forth between the action and reading. I also play MLB the Show and haven't really found it to be repetitive. I understand that Markus and co. have bigger fish to fry BUT this would be a great addition IMO.

Are you on PC or Mac? On PC there is TTS (text to speech) that can be enabled. Along with the short PBP it synchs pretty good with the on field play in modern 3d.

It's not great but it does get the job done of allowing me to keep my eyes on the field. I never read any of the pbp anymore, and could never go back to playing that way.

If you can tolerate the time it takes the full pbp can give quite a good experience. Doesn't synch up very well and you have to sit and wait out the TTS in those situations where there is a long narrative. Keep in mind once TTS starts reading the full pbp there is no way to click out of it, at least none I've found. So once started you are stuck for the duration. It's the same for short pbp too, and even here I find myself wishing for a click through so it will shut up.

A dedicated full pbp would be cool, but I think it would have the same timing issues that is there now with the full pbp and TTS. The action on the field only takes x amount of time compared to whatever pbp needs to be read out. I suppose they could add some "filler movement" of players between plays as the extended pbp was being read. But, with any full pbp, I think, we're talking about adding a lot to time to play out a game. It takes me approx. a half hour with short pbp and TTS to play out a game now. If I go to full pbp I would think that time would double to an hour. However, keep in mind that while I've tried the full pbp and TTS I've never been able to do more than an inning (it feels like the game will never end), so an hour is only my best guess.

None of this post is me arguing that they shouldn't add it to the game at some time. Hell, I'd be all for it and certainly give it at try.

Both Tony LaRussa BB and Old Time Baseball had pretty good pbp with choice of Curt Gowdy or Mel Allen. Timing of plays vs comments worked because they kept it simple. I miss that aspect of enjoyment.

AI announcers powered by Chat GPT can't be too far away.

That is not present in the full PBP text of the plays. However, it's more text so the voice does not keep up with the visual play. Often it's announcing the pitch after you have watched the play.

I wonder if this would be good for a radio broadcast mode, where you just listened to the game and sounds without watching.

I would love it. But it won't really work unless they allow easy editing and community adding to the play by play file that actually coincides with what is happening within the engine and not just fluff.

They already do have that. It’s in a giant XML file that you can edit; in fact, one issue some of us have is that it’s gotten too large for some XML editors to consume it. But it’s very much there and people have made very large play by play add-ons as well.
